Could tell when J Day was clutching his back in the first fairway this was going to be a good day for him.

Lets revisit a subject....Who is the worst putter on Tour.
The Ponce for me.
Unbelievably bad!

Rory?

I haven't backed Scott since they banned the belly putter. I was willing that Rory putt in just now for a better lay - ah well

Not much market move for the Day birdie - rightly concerned about him pulling out I suppose

He looks more confident, but I can't say I see too much difference in the putting

Amazingly, Scott is 55th on tour for Strokes Gained Putting, which is statistically pretty solid.  My guess is he makes enough from mid range to make up for being hopeless from short range and so it doesn't show up in the stats.  Not many pros I'd less want over a 4 footer for my life though.

TB we all love a stat nowadays but he holed absolutely ZERO today, literally nothing, and Rory has been the same, just gifting shot after shot to the field.

Must be driving the pair of them up thee wall.

Rory tee to green been exceptional today. But that is not what wins trophies. Matsy holing more than Rory nowadays.

The same stat has Delaet ranked 44th and I'd have said he was one of the worst either.  I guess we remember all the missed tiddlers but these guys keep their heads above water being decent from 10-20 feet.  Funnily enough, the guy I'd have nominated for worst putter on tour is currently T2 at Barracuda.

Owen?

Of the Top echelon Scott,Rory,Sergio really trouble me with the putter,Rory in fairness usually gets it there,Sergio i reckon 50% putts are short. Scott just woeful.

But i would take one year of there earnings gleefully mate.Grin

Numbers-wise Matsuyama is worse than all of them.  I think putt for dough is a lot less true than it used to be.

Yup, Owen is consistently hopeless, especially on the tiddlers, testament to his ball striking he's kept himself on tour for so long, funny to see him pop up in a birdie fest event.  Obviously we're discussing the top guys, there are guys missing cuts most weeks who are far worse.  Numbers-wise the 3 who are near the bottom in most categories are Owen, Weekley and Palmer.

Take your point about Delaet, Scott etc pouring in their fair share of mid range ones-  very frustrating to see someone like Delaet not win though when his overall game should have had him pick up his maiden PGA victory by now. When you see some of the inferior players that have got their first one. All down to the 4-5 footers though when the important pars need to be made etc. Tb I know you aren't a fan of Day and his injuries - what are the odds he completes here?

If you want to see bad putting, click through Hagy's round in the Barracuda.

Wouldn't be too worried about Day completing, these days I'm convinced he uses the injury dramatics as a psychological tool, always seems to play better when he's grimacing away.

I think putt for dough is a lot less true than it used to be.

Agree. Of the guys that have multi wins this year, strokes gained putting stats as follows:

Thomas: 34th
Spieth: 38th
DJ: 62nd
Matsy: 180th Shocked

Same guys, strokes gained on approach:

Thomas: 18th
Spieth: 1st
DJ: 3rd
Matsy: 23rd

Throw in Rahm, who has been the best of the rest:

SG Putting: 59th
SG On approach: 4th

Never mind the putting...

Stats really mean fcuk all though , he can dress them up any way you want.  For example I don't think Thomas is anywhere near the top 34 putting wise , find his stroke very jabby , but he shoots some very low numbers now and then which makes his putting stats look much better than they are in reality

ConfusedConfused Would this not only further emphasise that 'putt for dough' is an overstatement?

I wasn't trying to be part of the putt for dough debate there therhino , just saying I think sometimes there are far too many stats and people read what they want into them .

How you putt under pressure , course management , etc etc are far more telling stats them somebody who holes everything on a thursday but wets his pants sunday
By:

When: 05 Aug 17 17:12
Absolutely agree dlarssonf - To use Deleat as an example again - he will happily knock in the 4 footers for pars on a Thursday, but if in contention on Sunday he chokes them so badly he may as well be nicknamed the Boston Strangler!

i know its only half way but Jimmy Walker isnt the worst player in the world and he seems in a really good position, if it was a couple of the others in his position they would be 2/1 or smaller. I know he isnt Jordan Spieth or anything but i think he should be getting more respect than his price suggests, so i am having a biggish bet on him of 4 points to win. Thats double my normal stake for a win only on someone who isnt names Tiger

some putting stats are distorted by bad rounds when they aint bothered

if theres a better putter than spieth about at the minute i would be surprised yet he can putt like he did
front 9 day 4 at the open, then knock in a couple of monsters as he did back 9

strokes gained on approach must be right , but get sergio on day 4 at masters form and you'll
struggle to see better... spieth no 1 .really ?

maybe the stats need some tweaking by the powers that be ?
