Dear oh dear jb Holmes
Report BARROWBOY February 9, 2015 12:47 PM GMT
What was his caddy doing letting him lay up,the way jb had been putting he would have had to stick it to 6 ft for him to have holed it.remember tim clark did something similar a few years ago cost him a title, but with his iron play it was slightly more understandable.
Report sandsave February 9, 2015 2:11 PM GMT
But birdie at 18 during play-off from lay up showed it was right decision ?
Report trebor February 9, 2015 2:31 PM GMT
This hole brings up the same debate most years it seems, I always say it's down to how the player feels about the shot that's important, we don't really get to see how the ball is lying, if it is sitting down or on a very slight downslope then the best you can really get is tricky downhill putt from the back of the green, next best and maybe more likely you get a shot from deep ruff down that same slope with water awaiting, Day was very lucky not to finish in the water not only on his last hole but the playoff hole as well.
The one thing that would not be correct is for the caddie to talk his player into going for a shot he did not feel comfortable with, give his player the distances and go with what the player wants to do.
If he had gone for it and put it in the water people would be saying he should have laid up.
Day went for it twice took 9, JB laid up twice and took 9?
Report padlock February 9, 2015 4:15 PM GMT
Why lay up first time to 71yards,difficult distance to implement spin etc needed ? Silly mistake
Report Marlas_Magic February 9, 2015 4:22 PM GMT
The market was pretty telling as to the decision Holmes made by laying up. He went from 1.7 to approx 2.3. Very rare a swing as big as that happens when hitting a decent shot.
Report Total Bosman February 9, 2015 5:49 PM GMT
Like padlock says, the key thing was he still didn't leave an easy pitch.  It's still over water, and if you try to get too cute or over-spin it then you can still end up in the drink on your third and lose a chance of a play-off.  If he goes in the drink on his second he can still make a par.  So the layup isn't even necessarily the safer play.

Probably the best plan would be to give it a tonk but bail out left or right, securing par and leaving a pitch along the breadth of the green rather than go long.  Where English was in regulation was ideal, and if he gives it a bit extra worst case scenario he still gets a drop from the stands and has an up and down for the win.  As you could see from the odds in terms of pure probability it wasn't the optimal play.
Report trebor February 9, 2015 7:31 PM GMT
Can't see that 76 yards was the wrong distance? he is playing into a pretty steep slope, he played a poor pitch and over hit it, but there was no chance you would spin it back into the water from there. most of the birdies made on the hole by players that laid up came from around that distance, the ones that left 100yards or more were playing a guessing game with how much spin they would get down that slope.
I would rather be playing from where he was than any other position around that green, maybe left hand bunker ok, but you would not want a poor lie as you would be short sided, but JB would not have finished in there as he hits a fade.
Report therhino February 10, 2015 11:03 AM GMT
Kyle Stanley laid up needing a DB or better to win. He lost. It's a very tricky 3rd. Should have definitely gone for it with his length and position in the fairway. If you aren't going to go for it from there, why bother hitting driver from the tee and taking that risk? May as well just hit a 4 iron.
Report trebor February 10, 2015 12:07 PM GMT
Go for it or lay up, there is no definitely about it? more birdies where made by the guys who went for it than laid up, but a higher percentage of players got down in two from laying up than went over the back.
Yes Stanley laid up and messed up, but Day went for it and was very lucky not to mess it up as well, tell me, if his ball had rolled just a few inches more where would he have opted to play his next shot from?
It's beginning to sound like I am saying that laying up there was the best shot, all I am trying to say really is that if JB did not fancy the shot then laying up was the correct shot for him, we don't really get to see how the ball was lying or know if he was between clubs, and he had already come up short on at least two easier approach shots on the back nine already.
What if the last had been a par 3 from where he hit his drive, would he have laid up, no of course not, he would have a good lie for sure then, and no real problem with being between clubs, but what if the last had been a par 4, and he still needed the four to win, I wonder if that would have made him go for it. Golf is so much more in the mind than any other sport.
Report BARROWBOY February 10, 2015 7:15 PM GMT
Cmon guys its simple no need to get too technical.flushed his drive had a decent lie then bottled out, the tournament was his but he choked
