Bubba has been the best player this year 2 wins chucked away another 2 or 3. If he putts well hard to see him not in contention.

There is a palpable sense of excitement about the return of the U.S. Open to Pinehurst, long seen as the jewel in the crown of American golf. The course has undergone extensive changes since Michael Campbell’s shock victory in 2005 with the aim of restoring the layout to its natural glory. Gone is the the thick rough and the fairways have also been widened so the longer hitters will definitely have an advantage off the tee. This does not make it a bomber’s paradise however. Pinehurst No.2 was always designed to be a second shot golf course and it will be here as well as on and around the notoriously quick and sloping greens that this tournament will be won and lost. The qualities required will be great driving, outstanding ballstriking, a delicate touch from off the greens and nerves of steel putting on them. It is well worth taking a look at players who feature high up on the Official PGA Tour Stats Lists in Categories like Total Driving, Greens in Regulation, Putting and Scrambling. Players who have shown an aptitude for similarly tricky layouts should also be considered.

2011 Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel arrives at the year’s second Major almost completely under the radar and with all eyes on Rory, Bubba and co. I rate him an excellent each way proposition at 55/1 to add to his major trophy collection. He has shown excellent form all season on many of the toughest courses at events such as the WGC Cadillac Championship, The RBC Heritage and The Memorial. This last named saw him ranked 4th in Greens In Regulation for the tournament and if he continues to strike the ball this well, allied to his customary strong driving and putting, he will go very close.

Jimmy Walker has long threatened to become a major force on the PGA Tour and he has certainly done that this season with a series of explosive performances. Having already triumphed earlier this year at The Sony Open and AT&T Pebble Beach (advised in this column at 25/1) he shows no sign of letting up with subsequent excellent finishes at The Masters (6th) and The Players Championship (6th). Quite simply we are looking at a guy who drives the ball a mile, is a great ballstriker, outstanding putter and is playing full of confidence. A first Major victory is surely within his grasp. Take the 50/1 each way.

Regular followers of mine will know I am a huge fan of American Bill Haas and this 32 year old has long been at the top of my shortlist of the group of young Americans most likely to make the breakthrough at Major level. He has already bagged five PGA Tour titles including the prestigious Tour Championship in 2011 and a combination of a rock solid all-round game combined with an excellent temperament for the big occasion will always make him an attractive betting proposition, especially as he is a player whose profile allows him to go about his business with the minimum of fuss and attention. This season he has once again been a model of consistency, making the cut on all 14 completed starts, including Top 10s in The Humana Challenge, WGC Cadillac and The Memorial. The 100/1 was hoovered up on Monday but at 80/1 I still think he is well worth an interest.

We will finish the staking plan with two 100/1 shots who could well make those odds look ridiculous come Sunday night. Graham DeLaet has been in outstanding form for almost two solid years now and the 32 year old Canadian has the ideal game to succeed at Pinehurst. The stats do not lie and DeLaet leads the Tour in Ball Striking and Greens in Regulation and sits an eye-catching 5th in Total Driving. This explains his tremendous run of form this year which has included 2 Runners-Up finishes and 2 further Top 10s. If he can find some rhythm with his putter he could be in for a tremendous week.

Until recently Ryan Moore has never really looked like fulfilling the potential of his glittering Amateur Career but all that began to change in October with victory in The CIMB Classic. This has been followed by Top 10s this year in The Hyundai Tournament of Champions and The Phoenix Open as well as Top 25s at the tough examinations offered at Wells Fargo and The Memorial.  He seems to excel at these kind of tough courses and his Greens In Regulation Ranking inside The Top 10 helps to explain why. He is a comparatively short hitter when stacked up against the other selections but his Top 10 Finish at the notorious Bethpage Black in the U.S. Open of 2009 shows that long, challenging courses are well within his skillset.
