A seriously tough track.....i attended the year before last and the length of the course was frightening
|
|
By:
shame El Pato isnt playing. Loves the place (should have beaten Els twice in the MP) and length would have suited even better
|
|
By:
yet course has a history of shortish hitting winners, even before the changes.
of course length is always an advantage if they have a straight driving week |

Don't often bet Euro tour but this is a special event. At the prices, gotta take Rory. His form is building and perhaps going back to the UK will remind him that he is Rory McIlroy, and the others, are not... 12.5 more than fair. On holidays at the moment, posting from Port Douglas, played golf at Seatemple today

Lee Slattery having a very consistent season, and I fancy him to contend this week at a big price. Also @ 200/1 E/W top 6
Also like Matty Baldwin's price. Took what I could on Paul Waring above 400s over on the purple. Also @ 200/1 E/W Fancied a wee bit on Grillo this week, but his price looks out of line to me, compared to others, so I'll leave it, for now. Wanted to back Seve Benson, but apparently he hasn't made it, although the euro tour site has him as a starter. Few bob on David Higgins, Jarmo Sandelin, and Alex Kaleka @ 1000. Looking to add Espen Kofstad at that price. Bernd Wiesberger E/W @ 70s Leaving the top end of the market alone, as this event does have a habit of throwing up the odd big price jobbie. I do think that Martin Kaymer will do well though. Plenty more irons in the fire... Good luck peeps. |

Why on earth do the PGA still keep putting houswives favourite Darren Clarke in "top" groups....he is with Sterne and Olesen which is the group before which will be the two featured TV groups....
Still cannot believe he won The Open... |

Added Peter Whiteford @ 510
Topped up Slattery @ 550 Topped up Matty Baldwin @ 710 £19 @ 1000 Kofstad. This kid can play.... Hopefully this week. Onwards.... |

ive backed the barnrat at 200/1, ive no idea how he will react to playing in this english winter, and garth mulroy
who shot -18 or so round some us pro am on the 2nd level tour last week, he showed a glimmer of promise last year there just seem to be too many short prices up top of the market, so there must be some value if i havnt found it then good luck to you all . |

This weeks main event is the BMW PGA Championship from Wentowrth and as the flagship event in Europe it attracts a top quality field but sadly these days it's the only event to be played in England. Those facts actually has led me to all my picks this week - English players have dominated this event for a while now and I would hazard a guess that to them it is the English Major as the Open moves back and forth across the Scottish border. In recent years English players have had the following top finishes
2012 - 1st Donald 2nd Rose 10th Morrison, Poulter 2011 - 1st Donald 2nd Westwood 3rd Dyson 7th Donaldson, Horsey, Whiteford 2010 - 1st Khan 2nd Donald 5th Willett 6th Wood 2009 - 1st Casey 2nd Fisher 6th Wall 2008 - 2nd Wilson (lost play off) 3rd Donald 2007 - 2nd Rose (lost play off) 2006 - 1st Howell 2nd Khan I think that is conclusive that it favours the home players but it also helps that a player has had a top finish in recent years - every winner since 2005 has had a top finish here in the four previous years. That helped me narrow things down to five players - I left out Donald as he is not in the best of form and his price is short, Westwood as he still struggles to win and Casey as I am not convinced he is back. Ross Fisher learnt his trade round Wentworth and has nearly won here a few times in the past. In 2007 he entered the final round in the lead but collapsed with an 84, in 2009 he was 2nd losing by a stroke and was 10th the following year. He has been plying his trade on the PGA tour this year and finally had a good result at the Wells Fargo when 10th. He is in the top ten for GIR over the pond so is striking the ball well but has struggled with his putting - a return to Wentworth could bring another top finish 0.6 ew 80/1 David Horsey has been in great form finishing 6th,2nd and 4th in his last three starts. Having taken a month off he played a EuroPro tour event last week to fine tune his game for this week and lost in a playoff. In 2011 he was in a similar vein of form and was 7th here whilst in 2009 in his first appearance he led after the opening round. I can easily see him getting into contention this week 0.25 ew 80/1 Chris Wood was forced to take time off recently with injury and only returned last week in the matchplay event in Bulgaria and played well cosidering he would have been a bit rusty. He has certainly been a top performer in big events on home soil in his short career with a pair of top fives in Opens and in his first attempt at Wentworth in 2010 he led by two going into the final round before fading to 6th. He now has two wins to his name achieved in the last nine months and if he has shaken off any woes then he shoud be competitive this week 0.2 ew 100/1 Danny Willett has taken time off recently for different reasons as he got married and has been on his honeymoon so hasn't played since March when 5th in the Tshwane Open. He is a risky proposition this week due to the length of his break from the game but I will take a risk as he was 5th on his debut here in 2010 0.2 ew 125/1 I really do think Simon Dyson is being under-estimated this week due to a poor level of form over the past eighteen months. Last year that was due to two bad injuries and by his own admission becoming a dad and he has taken a while to start to hsow his form again. In a recent interview he said he was hitting the ball well but simply wasn't scoring and that is borne out in his stats which are really stron in the GIR department. I am hoping a return to Wentworth where he has always putted well will pay dividends - he had great stats here on his last visit two years ago when 3rd. It is also worth noting that he has also won at another Harry Colt golf course - Hilversumche - get him onside at a big price 0.4 ew 150/1 |

Almost every year it seems, there have been significant changes to the West Course at Wentworth. Remember the heavy criticism aimed at the Big Easy for the dramatic changes to the 17th and 18th holes and of course the very poor condition of the putting greens.
Well, I can tell you that the putting surfaces have been re laid and are vastly improved on last year and the landing area on the par 5 finishing hole has been flattened out to allow a realistic opportunity to hit that green in two and therefore increase the chance of eagles on 18. I was at Wentworth last year and aside of James Morrison chipping on for an unexpected birdie on 18, it was as dull as dishwater, expect fireworks and final day drama this year. This was great event for me last year, selecting the winner Luke Donald, Paul Lawrie and Peter Lawrie at a huge price for places, all delivered. So, its an event I enjoy and I am pleased to say that with a Gmac / Peter Uihlein double last weekend, my form is warm to say the least. With the traditional Pro Am event due to deny the players any further worthwhile course practice, it will be full steam ahead early on Thursday and I cant wait. Luke Donald is an understandable bookies favourite, however, his form this season on the USA Tour has been well below his usual standards and he doesnt appear to have the spark of previous years. Of course this may change now he is back at European Tour HQ, but somehow I doubt it and I would be keen tom field against him this week. The European Tour have been keen to market the fact that the entire victorious European Ryder Cup team will be present this week which is great news for TV and patrons alike, shame none of them, other than Paul Lawrie, actually practice their craft here on a full time basis. Justin Rose was edged out last year and simply miss fired on the last day when Donald stepped up his game, I fancy things will be different this time and with his wonderful ball striking, I can see Rose taking revenge and the bumper first prize. At 13 with Betfair he is fairly short, but I am already on and have backed Rose to win the event outright, I am pleased to see he is also out early on Thursday and with a somewhat rejuvenated Martin Kaymer. It should be noted that its not always a superstar that wins this prestige event at the home of European golf, remember journeyman Simon Khan lifting the trophy only a few short years ago. Branden Grace is on the verge of that superstar bracket, the South African won an amazing four times in his rookie year in 2012 and placed 5th here too. The course is made for his power game and he has sublime touch, he also has a prized early / late combo and at a rather large looking 50 with Betfair I simply had to dive in. Tongchai Jaidee was narrowly edged out by a very focused Gmac at last weeks Volvo Matchplay, I followed the Thai sensation at Wentworth last year and he hit the ball extremely well. Given his relative form this year over last and his lift in confidence, I fancy Jaidee can be in the mix again this year. He is a seasoned pro and class act and at 90 he represents some real value. Golf tipsters live for the prospect of a big priced outsider landing the spoils and in that regard, I am no different and I think I may have found a couple of alternatives to the popular choices at the head of most betting lists. Last year I gave you Peter Lawrie at silly prices, this year I have two more at even more extravagant odds. First up is a player who has featured here at Wentworth on more than one occasion, Fredrick Andersson Hed. The tall Swede is at home around Wentworth and at 450 is a very tasty back to lay proposition. Runner up in 2010 and top 18 in 2012, he is over priced and ideal as a prospect for trading out. This event often throws up a young upstart and, Danny Willett showed here and so did young James Morrison last year and this year I fancy the flamboyant young German Maximillian Kieffer can hit the early headlines. You may recall he lost that elongated playoff and was one good putt from a maiden European Tour victory. He has no ear and I am told fancies the course this week, at 500 on Betfair, why not ? Two final words, one for Marcel Siem who my contacts tell me is very confident of a strong showing this week. A shout also for the caddie Billy Foster. I had lunch with Billy a couple of weeks ago in Leeds and what a top bloke he is. His knee injury cost him his job with Lee Westwood and its a year since he last carried a golf bag. I am delighted that he is back this week and will have the pleasure of caddying for Thomas Bjorn, the very best of luck Billy and welcome back. |

I would add that others tend to favour the '3 holes ahead' strategy. I, however, tend to favour the ' 3 weeks ahead' system.
I prefer to use any strategies depending on day, week, month, year. 'Once a year' strategy is a good one. |

Into the mix for me are
pa Lawrie, Serg (although where his head may well be now....?) Francesco Molinari, Chris Wood, Marcel Siem, Felipe Aguilar & Ricardo Gonzalez. All a bit of a role but all our starting.... to show some signs of form of late & have had prior showings at Wentworth. Of the favs Westy & Rose should go well but not at them prices for me, Luuuuuke is far to short considering his form & others who woulda tagged like GMAC & jaidee have gone a few holes too many last week allbeit the Thai is a fit fellah & may go very well. grace, Sterne & mannassero are others scoped but there jumping back n forth of tours always is a ? for me gl all, hope the weather stays fair for the majority of the tourney & for those that are going. |
