Stop loss of 5% on horses would have saved you £900.

Greyhounds wouldn't have hit the stop loss so you would have kept going after the loss of 244 into profit.

SavineIsGOAT is saying something that should be obvious if you look at your old threads.

There are factors that causing you to swim in circles.

The dogs: I can only go by what I see and that is you have never made money on dogs.  It gives you a 'fix' of a good day then goes nasty on you.  "But I love the dogs".  Well, I love NHL hockey but rarely bet on a sport that involves a 3 inch rubber disc that is played on ice by men on skates.

No stop loss:  You are aloud to have a losing day.  But 30%?????  or more?????  You need to value your gains.  You need to say 'well done' and then focus on keeping that money.

Now, look at the positives:

After 13 days, you have averaged a gain of 11% a day.

You won't be able to sustain that.  So don't try.

Try the live stop loss.  From bet to bet, whether it be five in on the day or fifteen, if the live stop loss (start + gains) times 5%) goes below 5%, walk away from THAT sport.  Clear your head then take on the next (i.e. horses in the afternoon, football in the evening).

Try it for ten days - No dogs and stop loss.  Do the horses, do the football, enjoy life in between.

If you can't walk away with a loss on the day, you certainly won't be able to walk away with a profit.

Thanks for the comments and advice. I'm afraid right or wrong I like to do these challenges in my own way .... however I do hope to alter my mind-set to ensure I at least give this challenge a good shake. I think what you mention in the last line bears true ....

I have changed recently what I look at for the Aussie greyhound racing .... and this effectively has nearly wiped out this challenge (certainly this morning has been horrendous) ..... one thing I do do wrong (one of many) is using certain factors to filter out (mainly) lay selections so what I do occasionally is select other lays to bet on when I should be leaving them alone ....

Another car-wreck start to the day ..... might have to go back to my original aim which was to win £100 per day .... Crazy

"No bet" is often the best bet in a race.

i.e. today:
330 Honoured I have ranked by 4 lengths over the fave and clear of the 2F. At an EW price *BUT* two years since it has run 2 miles.  So no bet because of the question mark and not switching to the fave who I think will get beaten.

-----

Fair enough on wanting to do it your own way.  But, as mentioned, your bot and dogs are not working for you.  They are working against you, essentially causing you to swim against the current.

Your sub-challenge is to try to make your bots work on greyhounds rather than focusing on where you are doing well.

Whether it be this challenge or any aspect of life, time to refocus your energy.

Best of luck.

undern- Your "way" will not "work".

You are still doing so many things "wrong" that how can you expect your way to "work"?

It was clear to me when I posted -

DFCIRONMAN 27 Mar 14 23:37
Allowance Optional Claiming .......A race type with same age horses on DIRT in USA .....and you risk major chunk of bank on it......Does not auger well UD.

and from posts on the thread to date, as well as all the other threads, you appear not to have learned much from your ups and downs.

As soon as your bank fluctuates down to just over £300 from larger amount, or jumps with huge increases, it is again clear that you are still not operating with enough control.

I think you do have ability in certain sports areas ....but you cannot be spending enough time analysing an event, especially HORSE RACING where there are so many factors relevant from race to race and you must know what races you have an edge in.

I just get the feeling you take on a favourite without much analysis on that race, and your STAKING tends to increase  after a HIT.

Football betting appears you increase STAKING hugely after a HIT.......and FOOTBALL is a more volatile area of betting where many believe they have an edge....but in reality they don't. It is a dangerous area to bet the way you do after a HIT...............especially after a long day spent on betting.

I used to take on EVERY RACE type in BRITAIN with horse racing.......to learn from so doing......I believe , based on thorough analysis of ratings and results, that I would find betting strategies that "work" . It has taken me years to do this and there is no doubt that I have proved my "system" of ratings combined with various strategies "worked" in past ......and should still "work".  Unfortunately personal circumstances, bereavement, ill health and current circumstances( carer), have stopped me proceeding the way I need to proceed...........Energy levels not enough to operate to level I need to operate to.

Horse racing is a sport where "skill"/ "edges" do exist...............greyhound racing ( far fewer runners) is more of a lottery....but never had ANY interest in such sport and no little about it.

Do you know where you truly have "edges" that you know how to exploit with betting strategies? The number of sports areas you are taking on indicates you are operating like an addict...........triathlon etc You really need to concentrate on your definite edges and only bet when you have VALUE.

CHASING IS THERE EVERY DAY ALMOST... so you will have ups and downs with such bets......and until you start exercising proper control... cut down on events taken on ...and structure you betting day.......there is no way you will avoid losing your bank.

Your way just will not "work" undern..................Hoping you stop and rethink what you are doing....as so many things done badly for you to succeed.

Well I have certainly done enough damage this morning to effectively start again Crazy ... while I had fun this morning yep agree with all that with the little things I do do well I certainly stuff up in many ways .....

While I "see" what I need to do .... controlled staking, stop/loss limits, keep to what I think are my "edges" .... avoid too much betting, certain markets, chasing etc ... accept losses and appreciate that it is a long term challenge.

I need to stop having "fun" taking on some low odds favs (it is not part of my perceived edges just like doing it Laugh ) and one big thing is if I do have a losing run stop thinking about how big the challenge bank was a few days back etc .... and focus on the day at hand.

I actually "like" betting to win £12.50 ... don't ask me why .... and if you check out all my challenge threads you will see lots of these in there. These smaller bets can quickly add up so I do fail to understand why I can't keep to these. I guess the "rush" of winning/losing and the unknown is why I go a bit wild.

DFC - I think my greyhound bot is worth sticking with - it is simply my added betting which is wrecking it all.

Quick stat - the greyhound bot since the start of this challenge has the following:

The bet is £125 lay bet.
Selections: 28
Avg. Odds: 4.8
Profit: £462
Profit per selection: £16.30

.... I hope I am able to stick around for another day with this challenge.

DFC/Shapeshifter - sorry for those greyhound bot stats the first say 12 bets were outlays of £100 not £125 ... that is playing morning and arvo only.

2010/2011 tax year, one of my businesses beat all trends in the sector.
2011/2012, a lot investment and time put in to ramp it up.
The books showed little profit for the investment of both money and time.

I shut it down in November 2012 after eight years.

If I had shut it down eight months earlier, I would have saved thousands.

Rereading all my notes, all the numbers, all the clues were there.  I was just too focused on keeping the team together, keeping relationships going with clients.

Sometimes simply reading what you type gives the clues.  But what you do with the clues is another thing.

The figures say it all ... nothing like a "rocky road" challenge. Things are going to change as while I enjoy betting on anything and everything clearly there is too many ups and downs .... which ultimately means a final down and silence until I start another challenge Laugh

I have lots of notes on spreadsheets (which I return to occasionally and re-write etc) which I use to establish the bots and pointers for some of the markets I bet on ..... well I mean the bets I sensibly place .....

Anyway .... so looking to start off with a controlled frame of mind. Played the Aussie markets this morning and have been doing quite well. I then switch over to the UK greyhound markets (and while setting up the bot) I played one greyhound race and lost and then turn back to Aussie race to win a bit back .... turned to next UK greyhound race and layed todays profit (around £150 at that stage) on a fav (which I thought would get beat) and duely lost the bet ....

Disgusted with myself for letting go of the £230 or profit I had built up from the Aussie racing ... I turned and layed a big Aussie greyhound fav (around 1.55) for £250 .... so will either win a lot or be down £250 for the day ....

.... yep it ended up losing so I won a lot ..... yep another merry go-round morning which I need to stop doing.

For **** sake ... the bot has layed 3 winners in a row (and yes I did put more on them as well) ..... the day after I mention how well the greyhound bot is going it turns around and bites on the back-side ..... must admit I am just about sick of betting full stop .....

SHAPESHIFTER'S point re stopping dog betting seems sensible to me.

Small number of dogs in a race, but a less reliable sport IMO to bet on makes it a lottery.

As you will get returns more frequently, due to small number of runners in race, you will get a "high" often from wins. So you "feel" you are good at betting on this sport due to getting returns more frequently. Whether you have an "edge" or "edges" on sport will be down to the profit made.....and from SHAPESHIFTER'S observations it just is not worth doing.

As the dogs start early am UK time, if you take a big HIT early....then your CHASE mentality is more likely to kick in. It was the impression I got from just looking at your results now and then.

The expression....you are "going to the dogs"...........probably reflects how you are betting! Not trying to be mean.....just trying to be factual re how you have been betting on the challenges.
You took 5 HITS yesterday from first 9 races on dogs UK.....and the amounts lost were generally increasing. How can taking such HITS help your mentality , before UK racing starts, when coming down to betting on HORSERACING?

Thorough rethink needed undern......I agree with S that dogs should be binned!( Of course you will get days where the HITS don't come so frequently......but that is more down to LUCK than any edge you believe you have with dogs IMO. The nature of dog races ( small fields) will appeal more to a "compulsive gambler" than a professional gambler .

I suspect the USA HORSE RACING fits close to DOG RACING re being more likely to appeal to "compulsive gamblers" due to frequency of races and many small field races......and you can see how you are getting numerous HITs when CHASE mentality kicks in.

Please stop and rethink what you are doing wrongly.

GL on stopping. May take 2/3 years analysing your bets before you know what really works for you and what does not!

I posted this at the end of your last challenge.

"It was over on the 23rd when you lost £1300. Your mind completely went and you became a chaseaholic. Ironically if you had taken a step back and said hey look i've made 50% of my bank in 2 weeks you should have been pretty pleased with yourself, but you concentrated on what you had lost rather than the bigger overall picture.

All of your challenges seem to go the same way, you have a day where you have a big loss and then a few days later you've blown it all and challenge over. If you bet such volumes that you can make 50%+ of your bank in one day you have to be able to accept that you will have days where you can blow 50%+ of your bank. It's not bad discipline or bad betting is just chance. Until you can accept those losses and bet the next day exactly the same whether you've had a 50% loss or a 10% gain then it is less than likely that you will succeed."

Looks like exactly the same has happened again here. Ask yourself "would I have bet in exactly the same way from the 8th onwards if I had just made £250 each day from the 1st to the 7th April".

It is, especially if you can do it in thre to four hours.

Not many 'small businesses' can start with a £1,000 and generate that sort of income after two to three weeks.

But no one seems to grasp that.

Undern even mentions that £12.50 gains can add up.  You're right.  8 plays the entire day scores the 100.

But it is having the discipline of finding the 'right 8 plays' or having the awareness to ramp down until the right play comes.

Whether posted on here or on their own, people set out with 'goals' for their challenges.  But no one follows any guidelines (perhaps myself included).  And no one learns on the short term.

More importantly, money aside, one has to value their time which I personally believe is a valuable commodity, one that goes beyond wage and earnings.

One also has to learn that the strategies and approaches in business are different from when it goes from the opening with 1,000 to 5,000.

I also wonder if part of the problem is when one makes quick gains.  And because the balance was larger, one does not see the problems (I went through this with my business).  In this case, I sincerely believe the dogs not only ate the gains but distracted the focus on where abilities could have lead to a steady income stream.

Must admit I am still bit disappointed in myself for letting this one (like other challenges) get out of hand ...... especially when I do focus I could make £100 or so per day not easily but using a controlled manner ... which would be fine for doing this type of challenge ... I simply keep pushing and pushing ... rather than wait for betting opps to come to me.

Oh well like someone once told me ... "it is what it is" ... might start a mini-challenge say £300 to £3K ... to use as a practice on keeping tighter control. Not sure yet.

Undern, just to echo what a few others have already said, 100 pounds/euro a day would be a nice little income Wink

Plus if you could keep that steady amount coming in every day, which you have proven you can do quite easily, then you could always up the anti to 200 per day further down the road (if you so wished). Surely that must be better than trying for 1000+ sporadically and then a complete loss of whole bank roll?

Anyways Undern, unlucky on the latest challenge, would be great to see you back BUT aiming for smaller constant profits, rather than huge profits followed by a huge loss. GL mate.
