Been playing US horse all night ,depressing. Most winners I had have paid 12/1 etc on here 20/1 on the us pools.
In the old days the outside would have been 50/1 on here. Now all the bigger priced horses are depressed.
As soon as someone lays a good price in a billionth of a second Bf cross matching bot takes it.
It's not an exchange anymore. It's like a big fruit machine where they give newbies 98% payback from their 100% and
skillful player 60% back from their 100%.As long as everyone loses it seems Bf are happy.
People who helped them for free for years have been let down badly.
SCRAP THE PREMIUM CHARGE A.S.A.P.

I think the lack of impact that the rugby union PC exemption is having is a good indicator that the exchange problems are far wider reaching than just the existence of PC....

The whole structure is all wrong. It's such a shame as prices are all over the place on the exchange now. Lack of money, large spreads and weak odds being traded.

10 years ago Betfair was the place to find value. Now the bookmakers have narrowed the spreads and for a straight bet the value is with the bookmakers. So betfairs commission structure is making betfair uncompetitive for straight bets.
Other problems with Betfair.
Beta site is unusable.

I think the PC exemption trial would have been better suited to bigger markets than Rugby,

I haven't checked the matched figures but my hunch is that despite the rugby markets still having poor liquidity they are still marginally better than before the trial started (if someone could confirm that'd be great).

Obviously you'd expect to see a bit of a pick up with Heineken cup matches and in the Autumn internationals, but when compared to similar fixtures last year I'd guess they were slightly ahead.

The key thing here is that things aren't going to drastically improve overnight.  The rugby trial lasts until June which is a fair timescale but let's remember that Betfair are trying to mend something that they've gone out of their way to break over the last 5 years.

There's a lot of bad will towards them now and people will need to be won over in order to return. Why would users go out of their way to work on profitable rugby strategies if the carrot of no premium charges risks being taken away in a few months?

Unless Betfair change their pricing structure including premium charges soon, they have a grim future ahead.  They've lost the best form of advertising - word of mouth - and are more reliant on costly TV advertising than ever.

Recently we introduced a special offer removing the Premium Charge (PC) from all Rugby Union bets for a trial period. The intent of the trial was to grow activity and liquidity in Rugby Union.  After customer feedback we have now suspended this offer while we look at ways to improve the customer experience.  We want to offer more initiatives like this to increase growth and liquidity. When doing this we need to canvas customer opinion prior to launch to ensure we have an optimal customer experience.

Ayers - They've not posted about the 'current' (and ongoing) rugby union PC exemption on here, for some reason.

Marky - First week it came into action, there was a lot more money around, though that may in part have been as a result of no Premier League footy (international week).  Since then, it's been pretty much the same old, same old, IMHO - certainly on the handicap markets.  I'll concede that some of the Heineken Cup matches (particularly last week's) have been poor for traders (1.01 trains, in the main).

You cannot expect a short term offer on a small betting market to affect the way the global betting markets operate.

Betfair need to rebuild trust. They need to admit they were wrong and change their charging structure for all markets. They need to ask themselves if the Premium Charge was not inplace today would they impose it now?

The bigger question is what is the future for exchange betting? The guy that invented this crazy charge told me that exchange betting has lost the war with the bookies. He has put a policy in place and sold his shares and has gone.

I totally disagree with his viewpoint. A damn good effort has been put in destroying the exchange with the Premium Charges but it not destroyed yet. Over £250m a year in revenue is not a lost war.

They just need to admit they were wrong and change their pricing. They need to stop taking advise off computer programmers/traders and start thinking about what they can offer to punters. They need to offer the best value on the web.

£100m a year on advertising while at the same time destroying word of mouth networking? why?

This is the problem, the pricing structure is hugely advantageous( even allowing for pc ) to scalpers and momentum traders in the highly liquid markets.
Most punters want to have straight bet but are penalised with a huge 5% commission on their bet.
Betfair need to lower the overall commission, scrap the pc and have a commission on a transaction basis.
This as far as i can see is the fairest thing to do.
By:

Its not necessarily about what is fair. It is about what gives the exchange the greatest long term revenue. 'Long term' being the key. Getting advise off people who are about to jump ship and dont believe in the concept of exchanges may not be the best way of securing long term revenues.

The US markets where dire on Saturday.I posted a few examples on the US racing forum.
There was 9/1 horses sp on the tote going off 2/1 sp on here.It was race after race poor.
If there was no PC charge the liquidity would return and the share price could soar.
The way it's going this company will hit a brick wall soon and demand more savings.
Something has to give.Betfair would'nt lose face if they scrapped the PC winners Tax ,in fact
people would welcome the decision and we then could all grow this place back to what it was with
liquidity and banter and beyond. But the time is running out.
The purple and magic sign combo exchange is doing much better now and Betfair need to watch that to.
It's called a competitor Betfair!

There are an absolute maximum of 5% of punters who are not going to lose. They're either going to turn a profit or not bet.

The question for any bm is whether they want to accommodate these players. Can they extract some information for them, or get some irreplaceable liquidity from them, that compensates for proprietary losses / loss of losing-customer custom?

A new generation of Pinny and the Asians are doing this for football and other 2-team sports and can expect to attract more and more custom just on price. I'm not sure it's possible for any sport like the horses on which bf have liquid market because their price info. is implicitly available for free.

If Betfair turn to 'commission on a transaction basis' then the exchange will die very quickly imo.

Not being charged until a market is settled is their huge USP and one which they should be shouting about and not hiding from - this is not the stock market and any attempt to treat it exactly the same would be a terrible idea.

The problem is bet356 are running 102% books on the Premiership soccer match odds market. Small punters would be better betting there than paying 5% commission betting on the exchange. Thats the problem and Betfair will have to deal with it.

Yes, USA racing markets did have good liquidty, my pals and I used to have a night in, a few beers and bet most races at good odds, well at least reasonable odds, but now poor liquidity and P/C so a non starter. Guess this is becoming a similar occurrance Sad. Equally my pals walk away with the knowledge that if they win on betfair they may incurr a significant charge on their winningsShocked

Well hopefully they are actually looking at the pricing system. I still don't even know if the pc was introduced to stop bots, winners, traders??

If Betfair ever reverse the PC it'll be the best pr decision they ever made. It'd far outweigh any money they would lose in the short-term. They wouldn't even have to scrap it, just make it fairer.
By:
PLEASE TELL THE TRUTH
When: 16 Dec 13 19:17
Yes, P/C needs to be much fairer if it is here to stay. Market makers put many hours of research into creating / establishing the markets with liquidity; whereas the bots just feed of that hard work and yet stil pay the same P/C rates, (other than requests of course).
By:

They may have sound reasons for the PC but the thing is it needs to be fairer. Or better still scrap it, screwing winning customers for more money was not the original concept of betfair. It was an own goal when greed and desperation set in.
By:

PC is here to stay whether it is thought to be
fair or not. BF is for their share holders, not
for the traders who have latched on, they are
the only ones who think it is unfair.
By:
Charkitz
When: 18 Dec 13 00:16
Noooo it's not just traders that find it unfair... People like me who have good strike rate also get punished... And just because people are traders doesn't mean they are winners, it's possible to lose big/have losing weeks trading too.

And if Betfair is for the shareholders then isn't that an even bigger reason to scrap pc or atleast make it fairer?? When a worthy rival to Betfair eventually gets their act together, people will leave Betfair in droves, how's that gunna work out for shareholders?
By:
kenilworth
When: 18 Dec 13 09:55
There is a rival to BF as we all know, but despite the PC being 'unfair'
I'm not aware of any mass move to the other exchanges, also the share
holders must be comfortable about the upwards value of the company. The
PC in it's present form won't be going away it seems. GL.

Competition is not necessarily from another exchange. If you make a margin over 2.5% on turnover you pay PC on here. So it hits any gambler that has had a half decent run. The guy who invented the Premium Charge has never heard of companies like Pinnacle, SBO and IBC who are Betfair's main future competition for sophisticated gamblers.

It seems the whole model that the PC was built on was based on false assumptions.

also the share holders must be comfortable about the upwards value of the company.

You cannot club all the shareholders together as one. Share price is still below the float price. It could be argued that the rise this year is more due to cost cutting than any positives on the revenue side.

If the POCT comes in next year (which seems very likely) Betfair will be up for an extra £15m a year tax bill. This will rise if they continue to only focus on a small number of countries.

Over a period of time I cannot see how scrapping the PC could not be at least revenue neutral. Revenues are not up since it came in and they were growing massively YOY before it came in.

But the publicity and good will over the public apology could cut a significant amount off the need for £100m a year to be spent on marketing.

Are you seriously trying to claim the share price would FALL if Betfair scrapped the Premium Charge publicly and decisively??
By:
kenilworth
When: 18 Dec 13 10:40
I don't know whether it would fall or not but it would have
an effect on BF profits, in the same way that the existence
of the PC affects the profits of those who pay a PC, presumably
you being one of them. I have sympathy for those who bet straight
and pay PC, and I marvel at how they manage to it, I know I don't,
although I bet profitably, albeit marginal, the markets I bet in
being very efficient. GL to you MR Frog.
By:
frog2
When: 18 Dec 13 11:41
I do not pay it.

Its not about having sympathy or jealousy or anything else for those who pay the charge. That is irrelevant.

The PC is a destructive force on the efficient running of the markets regardless of who wins or loses.

Apparently the question, "Where does the Exchange fit in Betfair's plans moving forward?" features quite highly in the list of those that have been asked of the MDs....
By:
Hound-Dog-2
When: 18 Dec 13 14:41
"it's not just traders that find it unfair... People with a good strike rate also get punished.."

That is the issue about the fairness of it, they want to target certain players but others are caught up in the net.

And no evidence of a mass exodus to the other site, It might still be possible for them to become a realistic competitor, but at the moment they are little more than a thorn in the side for betfair. However, they do need to look after valuable customers and not p1ss them off. And I know they have the shareholders and customers to keep happy.  But would the share price fall if they scrapped the PC (?)
By:
Latalomne
When: 18 Dec 13 14:45
Short-term, probably.  Long-term, probably not.

Liquidity remains king in the exchange game, and it's hugely chicken and egg, which is why BD has struggled.
By:

When: 18 Dec 13 15:51
They will always be after those who pay less than 10% of their
profits, retaining 90%+ for themselves. Unfortunate but there you
are.
By:

When: 18 Dec 13 15:56
Things like 'cash out' and 'best price upgrade' need good liquidity in the exchange. The PC (and other charges) seriously hamper Betfair's efforts in this area.

A lot of football matches are not particularly liquid on here. Betfair should be the absolute king of in play soccer and yet they are losing ground to the Asians who, despite having poorer execution of bets, offer more liquidity.

Betfair should be thinking global on this and should be the best place to bet on soccer inplay worldwide. To do this they could either take the risk themselves (not skilled enough) or hand the risk to the market that is given incentives to bet.

If those incentives (no PC, less commission etc) is not given cashout and price upgrade will be irratic and generally poor. Over the next few years Betfair will just continue to drop more and more behind the more innovative firms.

The exchange model is the best way to bet but not the way Betfair are currently executing it.
