h-bomb you should post your selections on here in advance and what odds you get for reference.  It would be interesting to follow.

In the unlikely event you are successful, then non-believers like me will doff our virtual caps.

Good luck whatever you do.

16% would not be so spectacular, but still amazingly profitable (and harder to do the sums in a hurry Mischief )

tbh i can't see anyone having that sort of edge long term.

You would want to have very detailed and accurate records of prices over hundereds of bets to be confident about it H Bomb

If it's likely to fail, perhaps I'd be better doing it offline then.

Not sure I could take the abuse of the heckling masses who would undoubtedly flock. I've seen it on here too many times. Everything inevitably turns into a feeding frenzy.

For example, Williams has recovered from a set and a break down to take the lead. And my previous 8 or so selections this weekend all won. But Vallecano-Villarreal was only 2-0 and so lost. It's that result that would get all the attention and abuse, not the winners.

It's also by the way, the exact reason I need a staking plan, because I was very confident about that selection, yet it's the only one to fail. I understand that discipline and staking are crucial to success in betting. For me that's the difficult part.

Kelly formula divides edge by 'to one odds'

These odds are betfair odds minus 1.

so, to answer your question - on a 1.5 shot (betfair odds), you might bet 16%/( 1.5-1) = 32%.

Practically I would suggest not assuming anything like 16% edge because:
1 - as far as i know no-one has that kind of edge
2 - the risks of overestimating your edge (losing your bank) are worse than the risks of underestimating it (not making as much as you might have done).

If I was you I would start with a believeable edge assumption (3-5%) and use that for your staking... if you make a lot of money and are convinced that your edge is 16% then you could increase the stakes (less if your bets are not consecutive)

Thanks JLivermore, that's very sound advice. Thanks for explaining, as Kelly is somewhat of a mystery to me.

Looking forward to starting.

From what you've all said, it sounds highly likely that my sample of the last 100 bets isn't a win-rate that can be maintained.

But if I can keep it above 5 percent that would still be good wouldn't it? I think that can be done. But I suppose we'll see.

For what it's worth, my big tip for tomorrow is Anderson to beat Fish in the tennis @ 6/5 with Bet365 Happy

If you explained your betting plan, and you were up overall by following that plan, then that bet would never get abuse.  Remember Maria's bets ?  She never got abuse when she had a losing day.  The only abuses were by people who questioned the SP, and questioned her real identity.

Good luck with your bets H-bomb.  Post your bets here, get 6 out of the first 10 right, you'll have more followers then you can believe is possible.

Hi Still standing.

Trust me, it's not followers I want. I don't care if nobody ever knows. But I needed to come on here to get the benefit of other people's knowledge and experience.

In fact, posting my bets on here seems to be an almost pointless exercise, win or lose. I can think of 2 positives. Firstly, to get further advice from people such as yourselves, about things you may notice I'm doing wrong. Secondly, it would help my discipline to have all bets well documented and carefully considered.

The price for this would be that I'd become the entertainment - the latest 'Mug' for the crowds to toss rotten fruit at if things didn't go to plan. Not sure if going public is worth it or not.

I never meant you were looking for followers, but go 60 % out of the gate, and followers you will get.

It doesn't sound like you've bet your selections yet.  Putting money on the line is a lot tougher then paper trading.

Personally, I  keep my bets constant for a certain time frame.  For instance, I would start making 1% bets. Make 1% bets for a whole week. The following Monday, start making 2% bets on your new balance, if you won money the previous week.  If not, stay at your old level.  Reset your bet  based on your Monday morning balance.   Win money the previous week, up your bets by 1%.  Stay constant for the  week.

I would be risking 3% of my bank on each bet if I was betting at around evens each time. As a rule of thumb you can expect a losing run of 10 times your average odds to happen several times a year, and perhaps once a year a losing run of double that, so around 20 losses in a row in your case.

How many bets are you basing your 16% edge on? It sounds like you may have had an extended lucky run, unless you're consistently backing evens shots at around 2.32 which is possible but highly unlikely as you said you don't look at value.
By:

When: 26 Mar 12 09:39
Trevh,

Thanks for your input, as somebody I again believe knows what he's talking about on here.

I appreciate that a run of 20 losers is the theoretical norm. But in reality, that has never happened, not even come close. If I suffered 10 losers in a row I'd fully expect to, and I think deserve to, fail at this.

For example, I write a tipping column where I give four even money selections each week. Out of 128 selections made so far, my longest losing streak has been four. In fact, from 32 weeks, only one week had zero selections correct out of four. One week had just one correct. The other 30 weeks had 2,3,or 4 correct selections from 4.

I'd set the doomsday scenario at a maximum of 10 losers in a row. Although I don't think I've ever had more than 7 losers in a row.

Like everyone's said though, edge would be expected to drop. We'll see by how much.

P.S. Trevh.

I know your a great believer in value. Is it worth always backing in running and waiting for the price to go above the initial S.P? It seems to me that in tennis and football especially, the price almost always goes above the S.P. i.e. there are very few trains among even money shots.

I've often thought this would boost profits considerably. Or do you think any gains would be lost in those selections that never get matched?

Regards.

16% is not the amazing profit to stake. Its to do it at short prices. I have a slightly higher profit to stake over 12 years but at much bigger prices hence long losing runs and Kelly staking can't be too aggressive.

If the edge is true (probably want a bigger sample 2000-3000 bets) you have the holy grail my friend.
By:

TheVis,

My apologies, been out all day.

Now this has taken quite a lot of checking. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of the early prices, but here is what I do know:

I tipped 95 winners from 136 selections (success rate of 69.853 %)

I only have records of the prices for the last 44 of these 95 winners. But prices always have to be at least 1.80 or bigger (rules of  the employer)

Anyway, I added up the prices for the 44 winners and they averaged out at 2.0007. Lets call it a straight 2.0.

Allowing for Betfair commission of 5% say on profits, that would mean an average return of 195 pounds to a 100 pound bet, by my reckoning.

So that equals an estimated return of 95 x 195 = 18,525 from an initial staking of 136 x 100 = 13,600.

18,525 divided by 13,600 = 1.36 = 36 percent edge?

Obviously the sample size is only 136. But the prices of around evens are accurate.

Of course nobody would expect that edge to continue. But it has for now.

Does this help?
By:

That is an awesome performance.

Couple of questions.

1 - Are the markets liquid enough that you'd be able to achieve the prices you mention for decent sums?

2 - Do you see the underlying reason for the success of your bets? ie: do you see your advantage/edge? Just asking as 136 tosses of a coin you could call correctly 95 times.

I think the sample personally is way to small to make the assumption that you have such a big edge but then again you don't want to sit there just paper trading all your life. My advice would be start with a smallish bank and bet 4% bank level stakes unless you able to distinguish better bets individually and then you could use kelly.

This will give your more data to draw conclusions from. Good luck.

Hi racingguru,

Markets for these particular 136 tips were all major European football leagues. Mostly English Prem, La Liga. Basically markets where you could back these selections for hundreds at these prices before the off, and then for thousands in running.

I'd guess the early success is down to mostly statistical analysis, but also backed up by a very extensive knowledge of sport.

Everybody said the 16 percent couldn't be sustained, so this tipping column running at 36 percent surely can't.

To be honest though, I always knew I was choosing way more winners than losers. Doing accs for many years, (which I now understand are a fool's bets) I'd always be getting far more right than wrong.

So just recently I started to document my results to see if this was true. Doing the tipping column (which was then I started studying the stats rather than just using my sporting knowldege alone) seems to have raised my percentage of winners.
By:
racingguru
When: 27 Mar 12 02:54
36% in football cannot be maintained but hey I've maintained 17% in horse racing for 12+ years so I'm not gonna question what is/is not possible. The key for you is to maintain a good level of edge for enough time for you to feel confident you can maintain it and that its not down to a hot streak.

When you decide on a bet do you know what the correct odds should be? ie: are you a candidate for kelly staking? or do you just have a gut feeling that your selection is overpriced in which case you're prolly better off with a fixed stake method.

Being cocooned in horses had led to me to believe the major football leagues were almost impossible to show long term profit on and that obscure leagues was the way to go but if you can maintain edge on these leagues you really have the holy grail as no one can stop you getting on.

Btw by my simplistic reasoning if you had bet on 136 events at odds of 2.0 , with no edge you would have lost at least ( 68 * .95)-68 = -3.4.
But as this  "expert " actually claims to have won ( 95*.95)-41 = 49.25, I would say that his edge is considerably more than 36 % , wouldn't you ?.
In fact, I would go so far as to say that his edge is miraculous tbh.
But I'm just a miserable, jealous nitpicker.

i always disagree slightly about this....sure, it's hard to drop on a big-priced acca, but if you are consistently getting value prices about your selections an acca is multiplying that value surely?

agreed catflappo...was just trying to point out that if you have a value price about each selection, it is not a negative thing to put them in multiples....the value is still there, just that multiples by their nature pay out less regularly than win only bets so require a longer-term outlook

FAFH and CATFLAQPO,

I understand your cynicism. But relax, I won't be plugging any tipping column, indeed the tips have always been free to view for what it's worth. I think I'll save myself the embarrassment of revealing where though, as like I've already said this isn't about trying to attract attention....merely to find a good staking system.

TO ALL,

Surely on evens selections, wouldn't there be a 'Normal distribution' of the number of winners being picked? From say 1000 people making 100 selections, wouldn't most fall around the 50 winners mark (the MEAN), and for every person hitting 20/50 there'd be an opposite person hitting 80/100 (very few of these obviously), but hence a Normal distribution, for those who understand statistics.

That's all of course, making the assumption that the odds are TRULY evens. And of course, adjusting for Betfair's commission would drag those winners a little closer to the MEAN value of 50. Anyway, my point is, surely there has to quite a lot of people hitting winning percentages over 50, especially in the 50-60 range.

DUNCAN,

I understand now that accs are foolish from a money-making perspective, because you can regularly get 6/7 right, 8/9 right, 7/9 right, and make no profit, despite having a fantastic strike rate, which is something I always seemed to do. I was always looking for the big win and betting more for fun than business, rather than considering that actually, the slow and steady approach of backing singles could actually pay-off in the long-run.

RACINGURU

I understand what I consider the true odds to be, but so far have been selecting regardless of price. I understand there are many here who believe winning is all about getting value. I would argue though that MAKING PROFIT is about two things.....getting increased value, or picking more winners. Almost everybody here seems to have written-off picking more winners than losers as impossible, which I find extremely strange. I mean for every hopeless bettor backing 20 percent winners at evens, all you have to do is lay his selections to get your 80 percent winner.

HEREIN LIES AN ISSUE THOUGH. For example, I had selected Liverpool v Wigan to be OVER 2,5 goals at the weekend. I would have expected the price to around 2.10. Instead, the Betfair price was 1.72.

Now value-hunters would have had me not back it, but I did, and it won. If you are backing more winners than losers, then surely you can't afford to not-back selections you don't consider value, as you're throwing away winners?

To succeed, isn't it a case of getting good value OR getting many winners?
By:
h-bomb
When: 27 Mar 12 09:46
P.S. I hope we don't get lost in another VALUE debate, because of course value is desirable. But I don't think you can just write-off getting winners as impossible. And it's hard to turn-down poor value if many of them are winners.

catflappo

Apologies if you are genuine h-bomb but I've seen so many of these types of thread. If you've found an edge it is a very straight forward matter indeed to make money, staking is just common sense and the very last thing you want to do is tell anyone about it.

I'd  be interested, would it boost profits to not bet on, or even back against, selections I feel are poor value? I don't know....

Wouldn't this depend on my judgement of value being as good as my judgement of winners? That's harder for me to measure (am I getting value?), I'd say.

Perhaps it's worth trialling, to see what results I'd get. Or perhaps I shouldn't be greedy? I don't know.
By:

There is no such thing as "judgement of winners" so no trial necessary.
By:

Anyway, it seems we're getting a bit off-topic.

Consensus seems to be, start at 3-5 percent level stakes, which seems reasonable.

If I can maintain an edge (which popular opinion says I won't), then I suppose I should just be happy to have defied the odds, and not get greedy by trying to improve profits by agonising about how to improve the value I get.

And if I lose (as logic dictates I should), then none of it matters.

Many thanks for the advice!

Agreed there are tons of threads on the idea of it.... perhaps to reason it out, ask yourself if you would have backed Liverpool v Wigan to be OVER 2,5 goals if the price was 1.01, how about if it was 1.02, repeat for every possible price and you're getting there!
