Good point bto, I've found the same thing.  Massive stigma attached to the word "gambler".

Yes.

The general concensus of those that know now better is...

Gambler = loser
Bookie = scumbag
Market Analyst = Successful intelligent fellow

"trader" works. Even though I'm not one :p

Yes Cat, but I guess most gamblers are actually mugs or recreational punters to be polite.

BTO : My opinion is that there is a big difference (pressure) between someone who relys on their judgement and someone who has a mechanical edge.

Very true BTO, I often wonder how judgement gamblers make it pay consistently, it goes against everything I believe in, but some seem to, for how long though we don't know.

Occasionally I brave the footy forum, and there's a guy on the 'post your profit or loss' (or something like that) thread that's posting impressive big daily wins, all done by "gut feeling". I wouldn't back him to be a long term winner from what I've read.

No idea what a professional gambler does or their psychology make up!

However, to state they are "professional" as well as a "gambler" appears to be very "mixed - up " re what a "professional" is i reality!

"GAMBLING" is doing the lottery .....bingo......and poker..........and roulette etc etc ..........or getting married !DevilLaugh

HORSE RACING is the one that is where being a "professional" is fair word to use.......... !

No doubt you / them / others NEED to be DRIVEN by themselves to get to the standard where their ideas become reality!"

Some might be "blessed" in how they get to "discovering" their "edge".......and may not work at it too hard ...... Some are like me ...... have lost money in the past ......but through hard -work and a higher level of thought.....get to the grail position!

Unfortunately........you can have a "system" that you believe in .......in your head .....but converting that to a computerised "system" that you "know" how to use for betting purposes is  a very "difficult" transposition to "knowing" how to use it!

I could easily have "given-up" on my "system" of rating races years ago........however, I have not.....and I "know" that I was "right" not to stop on my "system".

Having a "complex" system re HORSE race rating is extremely "difficult" to "know" how to use it( taken me 3 years and a bit to GRASP just how GOOD the system is!).........though "simplicity" is what you should aim for........Unfortunately, due to my "obsession" re trying to get HIGH ODDS horses in top 3 finishing......I never took time to check out how system fared on SHORT ODDS horses......however, I now have spent TIME ( much of) and KNOW just how bleeding "good" my "system" is!

"VALUE" was always the objective in devising the system to find horses, that others don't "see", as being "ready to go " in a race at the distance....at that time of year ...on the going in that class of race etc etc etc............"VALUE" from BACKING perspective.....not a LAYERS perspective was my "obsession".....and at HIGH ODDS end of market.

I am a "professional" in how I have arrived at my state of "knowing"......but I certainly am not a GAMBLER!( was in past ....but not now I know just how "good" the system is!)

Perception is a funny thing, single guys are looked on as scumbags if they go to hookers, yet married guys pay 100 times as much for sex they rarely get.

Go figure!

True. You seem to be implying that a man has no emotional interest and only cares about having sex. Why would these men want to get married?
By:

Perception again.

I'm not implying that all men are only interested is sex and no emotional connection, but I am implying that most married men I know complain they get sex rarely.
Most of them also say they'd not get married again if they had the choice.
Yet they look down on those single guys who frequent hookers.

For the record, I'm not married but have been and have a wonderful 21 year old daughter who is the light of my life.
Hookers have never appealed to me, but I say to each their own.

I just don't feel that men who complain about sex and wouldn't get married again have no right to cast aspersions on those guys who attend hookers.

In that context my statement was made.

I think the danger in this game is relying on a strategy which could be picked off at any time -

If this happens (which it does for me every so often ) the temptation in the past is to branch into another area in a foolish attempt to  stay ahead - not good imo ,this is where disaster may loom .
You can smell the stench of desperation - losing bets are becoming common place and you're still looking to pay the bills -you start thinking of other ideas at very  short notice - suicidal betting  ...the gambling sharks can smell the blood ,the bank is decreasing - lady luck finds a way of kicking you where it hurts.
These are shark infested waters - swim carefully

The best advice imo is to sit out for a week or two and watch until your strategy  can work again, when those who have tried it havent researched enough ...they fail through their shortcomings  . Most strategies evolve and are very difficult to copy overnight - so its a case of sitting and waiting imo

I can't really comment on your friends perspective and any of their shortcomings. If you are concerned that your friends are making these comments about others when they are not really in a position to then perhaps you should speak to them about it.

As for me i don't think that single guys who go to hookers are scumbags. I prefer to think of them as losers. It's the attached guys that go to hookers who are the scumbags. That's just my perception though.

I enjoy taking time out from betting and i dont give it a second thought when i'm on holiday. There's other things in life.

Never a truer word spoken on here Duncan. I used to give mrs stew very little time when I started on here. All different now. I still have my days when I can be selfish with my time, but there are more priorities in life.

(this from someone who's been punting for over 35 years)

How many on here will be lying on their death bed and whisper, " If only I had done things different" (usually on their own.....)

James, I did a year as a bookie with no expenses. When I got 'busted', I continued to make a living. When I joined up here, I did nothing but lay. Sadly, I was using mrs stew's old PC (20 GB) At that time, (2002) I was laying horses that I thought weren't being matched. To my horror one saturday, I laid the same horse 5 times, each time it camt up 'unmatched', There was no w/l beside your horse at the time and I remember you had to scroll back and fore to see the prices and if you had been matched.

The particular horse I mention was (unbeknown to me) matched for a right few quid. (I just presumed at the time, if unmatched, you had to stick it up again) It romped home leaving me potless, but stll a lot of money in my property.

Long story short, mrs stew gave me a loan, and I'm still here.

Nothing to do with the story, but I genuinely can't remember the last time I laid a beast. If the FAV is odds on and I don't fancy it, I usually plump for the 2nd FAV...

U.A., BTO is saying that even you look down on single guys paying hookers, you perceive them as losers just as many would perceive you as a loser if you told them you're a gambler. Prejudiced stigmatic perception on both counts. We're straying a bit off topic now, but I couldn't agree more with "to each their own".
By:

Aren't you now being prejudiced in looking down at people by thinking that they would look at you as losers if you told them you are a gambler. I always found that when you tell people you are a gambler they then go on to ask you more questions before forming an opinion, but then i've never done anything like speed-dating.

By the way what is the topic again.

For what its worth, I've made a couple of TV documentaries about gambling, besides having been a pro-semi-pro myself for a number of years, and I've met hundreds of problem gamblers aswell as some huge pros, like Alan Woods (now sadly deceased).

There are a few things I have issues with in the OP:

Most problem and pathological gamblers fantasize about being a professional gambler or mistakenly believe that they are, there are very few true professional gamblers.

This may be true for many regular gamblers but not true for the majority of pathological gamblers I've met and who have distinct male/female differences. Men generally have impulse control problems and often have drink/drug related issues; women are usually self-medicating because of a deeper underlying problem, often depression. There may be a muddling here between the concepts of regular gamblers and pathological. But there is a big difference between the two.

Psychological profiles of professional horse gamblers showed they tend to be somewhat boring, socially insensitive, extremely unsentimental, hyper-vigilant, and very tense. (McCown & Chamberlain, 2000).

No idea who they profiled for this but all the pros I know, which is quite a few, are certainly not boring but quite the opposite - outgoing and extrovert in fact, though all show signs of sociopathy.

I'd suspect that winning horse gamblers, esp. those who started b/f the bf era, have to appear outgoing to get on w/ the placers they need to place their value bets.

Otherwise they might well appear reclusive, at least in their professional lives.

I can find value bets and know how to get out if sense trouble. Gut feeling in my case means doing right things at right time rather than sticking to a single decision which can go either way. No one can judge all perfectly but if majority of your decisions are right then that is enough. I know there are people who earn more than me but I have never seen a person win as much as me every year consistently.

Moving to new Zealand next week with wife who has a job lined up.  I@VE NOT EVEN LOOKED AND WITH oops, the wife's consent i'm going to try my hand at making it on here.  Slowly building bank and over last 3 months turned £200 into £900.  Plan is to slow down but continue to build to a level i feel confortable at.

Problem lies with parents, constantly being asked what my plans are, even accusations i'm lazy.  I'll have to tell them eventually.  Both are straight laced and liable to give me guilt trip.

Also writing a novel and learning a 3rd language.  Always found you need to make sure you have serious commitment to another project to deflect the pressures of proffesional gambling.

I'll always call it gambling as at ANY given time anybody could break and lose it all.  I'll never try to convince myself otherwse that its something else.

In 2010 I think I was up by 103k after June. But increasing stakes backfired. I had few big losses. The mistake I made is not withdrawing or investing the profits immediately. This time I am withdrawing not to repeat the same mistake.

It gives me useful insights. If he was posting figures 1% of the size, I would look at his posts differently. There are some people who make very consistent small profits, and are unwilling to scale up. That kind of thing fascinates me.

If no one posted figures, a key piece of info would be missing for me.
