What exactly was so 'think' (I assume you mean 'thick', but 'think' seems a bit of a Freudian slip) about Coolhand's post, Frim? The point he was making was that we should be trying to make good bets. Sometimes those good bets will still lose. As long as we were happy that we placed good bets, and that we were just unlucky that particular day, we shouldn't be displeased about having lost - just keep making the good bets, and we'll soon start making money again.
The worst thing to do is to place large but stupid bets and to pat yourself on the back when they go right. Because if they're bad bets, it's only a matter of time before they'll start going wrong, with disastrous consequences for our bank balance. |

Coolhand : Can you have a day in profit where you make bad bets?
and can you have a day when you lose and make good bets? This is key. But to understand it you need to be able to measure your edge, and from what I've read on the forum many people seem to think that 'edge' is subjective and cannot be measured until after many events. This isn't true, although obviously the edge can be confirmed after many events, but I know when placing a bet what my % edge is. So to elaborate on what Coolhand says, you could back heads at 2.2 for 20 bets in a row and lose every one of them, and that would have been a good days betting, in fact a fantastic days betting. On the flip side, the punter that laid heads at 2.2 for 20 bets in a row finished up with a very tidy profit for the day, but dear oh dear that was a bad days betting and he won't be around for long. Just thought I'd comment on this point (not aimed at you Undern or anyone else) because so many punters fail to grasp it, even though they claim to understand value. |

Glad to hear you confirm that still "working" on refining bets UD.....
Took me over a 2 yearperiod to analyse my horse racing system ratings results......and still could do more "work" on such analysis  . However, the main reason for such a time period to elapse was down to me being too focused on HIGH ODDS winners.......and not really targetting SHORT ODDS end of market. As it happens....the time was not wasted on the intial checks carried out. Have a STRATEGY indicating 17% ROI on BACKING such HIGH ODDS ones...........though I will probably just target SHORT ODDS ones applying STRATEGIES that produce about 15% on BACKING in WIN market and 15% on LAYING in PLACE market......Liquidity being better at SHORT ODDS end. May take me til MARCH 2012 to be in a position to us my system and apply strategies.........Personal circumstances not condusive to me doing so til then........However, I'm used to being patient and another 3/4 months is nothing considering how long it has taken to reach the point at today. Yes it's more difficult to evaluate sporting events than a coin flip fp, but it is possible. The point though was to show that many punters appear to judge their betting by the result of the event rather than the price that they achieved, and that price will determine whether or not they are successful long term regardless of the result of the event.

Yes it is a public forum where people can post on (within reason) anything they wish therefore feel free to continue while I take this challenge privately .....
but will continue on my merry way in private ... and use the money I (hopefully) will make in a worthwhile way. good luck to all you experts out there. I even played (and won) on the live Roulette with a smiling croupier looking at me as if she wants me ... .Before you experts provide 'feedback' about how you can't win in the Casino .... I hold my hand up and honestly tell you I have no clue whatsoever about casino games ...  As I mentioned earlier have taken my challenge off this thread and simply continuing with it privately. Thought I'd update the thread before the New Year. Bit hard going for a number of days but also have had some very good days. It does amaze me how things can feel so easy to make on some days and lets just say hard work on other days. ...
... and if anyone watches the Anyone Fancy a Lay thead I posted a very nice and quick 4/4 horse lays earlier today. Biggest loss was over £400 bet yesterday on a greyhound race. Somewhat too cocky with a system selection and naturally it came back to bite me. Won a bit in the casino which doesn't show in the p&l.
