How many more times is this going to happen?

I don't want to be an apologist for Betfair, but . . . maybe it's just impossible for an exchange that handles so many transactions to have 100% up time. Lots of the financial exchanges go down quite frequently: I am constantly logged in to my broker account, and virtually every day there is a message that some exchange or other is down. Perhaps it's just too much to expect that Betfair can do any better.

I think that's letting them off a bit easy C.

I agree 100%'s unrealistic, but the amount of downtime recently and the reasons for it (new code breaking under load, components breaking and taking the lot down) just haven't been good enough.

I agree with Nick, I mean Contrarian, I think outages are something we just have to try and adapt to, annoying as they are.

yes points taken  but thursday lunchtime !!!!???and later too!!I was lucky betting in between the two breakdowns!!!!!  I now have a bet daq account as back up and may look even further elsewhere too - can't afford to leave IR bets in the air like that. Betfair have spent much too much on making the site look pretty without have simple basic systems for back up etc.

It's very noticable that they always have the mug products (casino, arcade etc) up and running much quicker and with fewer original problems as they know people can go elsewhere for these, of course there is not really much option for the exchange Sad

As said above, I couldn't give a stuff about flashing adverts, sports zones, beta forum and all the other crap they have come up with "to enhance the customer experience", a simple working exchange is all that is needed, but no, they obviously have people there who need to justify their existence.

Go back to how everything was 10+ years ago, and I bet we wouldn't have half the problems we currently do.

If it goes down for a couple minutes every so often once in a while, like they had to reboot a key component or bring a redunant unit online, that would be irritating, but we could live with it and undertand it.

It's the duration of these outages, like 30 minutes, 45 minutes, a few hours that can really cripple people and get them really annoyed.

It's not really like e.g. a stock trading exchange as on inplay markets 15 minutes or 30 minutes (never mind an hour) is a lifetime, stocks will never change with the same volatility of odds of an inplay sports market.

That's the difference.

Maybe you're right Viva.
Trevh,
Nick? That's completely lost on me.

"I think outages are something we just have to try and adapt to, annoying as they are"

How on earth can you do that when you have no idea when they are, for how long they last and nobody at Betfair has a clue either?

You'll need to google "I agree with Nick" Contrarian. I recognised the phrase but didn't know where from until I did!

The best safety net would be to never have more than set liability on all markets/matches at any one time.

An outage shouldn't wipe anyone out. It may put a dent in your bank for no reason which is frustrating but would a day trader risk 100% of his funds at any one time? I doubt it.

The last major outage before this weeks was due to a known bug they had within their system. They must have told people to avoid triggering it, but over looked a cron job that did trigger it.

For me that is not reaching a hypothetical limit on number of transactions an exchange can handle but sloppy proceedures and controls.

Contrarian IS right... 100% uptime is completely unreasonable in computing. But I do think they need to invalidate all outstanding trades/bets in these cases, winning and losing positions alike.

And I say this as I am currently sat on a winning position... from which I would like to be off.

Well you would still come off as winner with other sites even if they would crash once a week. Not the case here paying 60% of your profits every week and getting no rebate with next week losses

Doesn't bode well for when the premier league kicks off again, the saturday afternoon "system falling flat on its face" every week used to be beyond a joke..

Even IT world leaders can't (or rather, shouldn't) guarantee 100% uptime.

The true answer is to make concessions for when these things happen, to mitigate inconvienience and possible bank busting.

You mean like pledging to suspend as soon as it goes down, rather than 13 minutes later for instance?
By:
Mike Awesome
When: 16 Jul 11 15:01
Absolutely Lori. Suspend and void all bets, win or loss. It may be unfair to some but it seems to be the best method all round to me.

... or well, refund all losing bets and keep winning bets but we all know that wouldn't happen.

F*cking great. Site goes down on the potentially most profitable day of the week, and then on Monday, start taking 40% - 60% of our winnings in tax.
