too stressful to set targets, win some lose some if it all goes move on.

not very technical advice for someone betting everyday for years, but got to keep stress to a min!

Why set targets ?

Do I set targets? Yes, 5% of my bank each week.
Do I always achieve it? No, but some weeks more (21% of my bank last week, which made up for a few recent poor weeks).

As long as I'm making steady profits in the long term, I'm happy!

Aiming to win is an important target itself, so don't
handicap yourself with meaningless targets.

Not really. If I thought I was going to win £10k with my betting in 2011, I wouldn't be here.

The Investor.

If you'd like to send me £10k today, I will give you all my profits in 2011. And I would do my utmost to make more! And I'm an honourable man and will keep my promise, even if I make a £100 million!

Most punters have a target of "must be in profit".  Very few succeed.

Write all your bets down  - even your £2 multiple fun bets

Knock up a quick profit and loss spreadsheet.

At the end of each week / month, record your profit or loss. Bang result into a yearly spreadsheet. If trend is consistently negative, it;s back to the drawing board.

You need to set targets if you are serious about gambling.

Obviously, if you are only punting for fun, forget the above and enjoy.

Kenilworth...would it lower your perception of how difficult it is to be in profit if i told you i was a long way in profit?
By:

When: 12 Dec 10 23:02
No, because everyone on here wins.

Emden, my target is to win every time I bet, having
faith in my methods to overall show a profit. I don't
need a spreadsheet to tell me whether I am succeeding.

That's ok. Whatever works for you.

I just find that with the volume of bets I place, without some sort of records (eg bookie, lay, back, selection, price, single/ e/w, stake, r4's, bogs etc etc), I wouldn't be able to know if I was in a profit or loss situation.

Fair enough Emdon, but I would have thought you
could work how you were doing without resort to
an annual spreadsheet to help you, but as you say,
whatever works for you.

I'm extremely focused on performance metrics.

After my first 6 months here back in 2006, I had made a small profit with a high degree of volatility. I analyzed what I was doing, what was working, why it was working, what wasn't working etc.
Subsequently my profits increased exponentially for some time (in 2009-2010 I've struggled to maintain the previous rate of growth of profits).

Initially I was making only a couple of pounds a day, but the high degree of consistency meant it was very straightforward to scale up and increase profits. All the while I remained very focused on metrics.

I was guided in the process by the excellent book 'Trading Risk' by Kenneth Grant.

This won't be useful for everyone though. If you need to be convinced of the usefulness of analysis of (performance) metrics, read "Direct from Dell" by Michael Dell.

For me performance analysis isn't limited to betting results. It also encompasses software, hardware, and optimisation of processes.

Do I set targets? Yes, 5-7% of my bank each week.
Do I always achieve it?  Yes ,over the month ,but i do take a chance with my entire bank on some games.

As interesting as that may or may not be Mansini, if you read the heading you will see that the OP asked a question about setting targets. Using other peoples threads just to have a dig at me or Kenilworth is a rather poor show, and some would see it as a sign of weakness in showing your own frustration.

everytime i put a bet on i try to win, thats a target but never seems to work out...........always one goal or corner out in soccer[im not the only one judging by football threads].........i really reckon a lot of bets are pure luck, many times a goal just misses , same in corners or the three ponter in nba but thats the nature of things.

i personally reckon bet fairys [very few succeed id probably right, even the big punters probably lose too, just win more and lose more, just the nature of the game.

I wasn't aware I had rated myself, that is compared with others. Perhaps I
only give that impression to Mansini, and that worries me less.

Lori and The Investor certainly do know their stuff.

But to disregard Ken and Trev is silly.

Do you set Targets  Yes ..  if you dont fancy a hot shot . lay it till your nose bleeds .. this goes for every sport .. cause  hot shots get beat every day of the week .. Remember  David  V Goliath.. Biblical Times ...Goliath was odds on about 100/8 .. David you could not give away  10/1 ..guess what  the hot shot  got beat . OK its a bit of fun  but theres a message there . know what i mean . zip
