too stressful to set targets, win some lose some if it all goes move on.
not very technical advice for someone betting everyday for years, but got to keep stress to a min!

Do I set targets? Yes, 5% of my bank each week. Do I always achieve it? No, but some weeks more (21% of my bank last week, which made up for a few recent poor weeks).
As long as I'm making steady profits in the long term, I'm happy!

If you'd like to send me £10k today, I will give you all my profits in 2011. And I would do my utmost to make more! And I'm an honourable man and will keep my promise, even if I make a £100 million!

Write all your bets down - even your £2 multiple fun bets
Knock up a quick profit and loss spreadsheet.
At the end of each week / month, record your profit or loss. Bang result into a yearly spreadsheet. If trend is consistently negative, it;s back to the drawing board.
You need to set targets if you are serious about gambling.
Obviously, if you are only punting for fun, forget the above and enjoy.

Emden, my target is to win every time I bet, having faith in my methods to overall show a profit. I don't need a spreadsheet to tell me whether I am succeeding.

That's ok. Whatever works for you.
I just find that with the volume of bets I place, without some sort of records (eg bookie, lay, back, selection, price, single/ e/w, stake, r4's, bogs etc etc), I wouldn't be able to know if I was in a profit or loss situation.

Fair enough Emdon, but I would have thought you could work how you were doing without resort to an annual spreadsheet to help you, but as you say, whatever works for you.

After my first 6 months here back in 2006, I had made a small profit with a high degree of volatility. I analyzed what I was doing, what was working, why it was working, what wasn't working etc. Subsequently my profits increased exponentially for some time (in 2009-2010 I've struggled to maintain the previous rate of growth of profits).
Initially I was making only a couple of pounds a day, but the high degree of consistency meant it was very straightforward to scale up and increase profits. All the while I remained very focused on metrics.
I was guided in the process by the excellent book 'Trading Risk' by Kenneth Grant.
This won't be useful for everyone though. If you need to be convinced of the usefulness of analysis of (performance) metrics, read "Direct from Dell" by Michael Dell.
For me performance analysis isn't limited to betting results. It also encompasses software, hardware, and optimisation of processes.

As interesting as that may or may not be Mansini, if you read the heading you will see that the OP asked a question about setting targets. Using other peoples threads just to have a dig at me or Kenilworth is a rather poor show, and some would see it as a sign of weakness in showing your own frustration.

everytime i put a bet on i try to win, thats a target but never seems to work out...........always one goal or corner out in soccer[im not the only one judging by football threads].........i really reckon a lot of bets are pure luck, many times a goal just misses , same in corners or the three ponter in nba but thats the nature of things.

i personally reckon bet fairys [very few succeed id probably right, even the big punters probably lose too, just win more and lose more, just the nature of the game.

the shrewdest people on here imo are... lori + investor, they know what they are doing kenny overrates himself a lot and trev is a bit of a no hoper
I wasn't aware I had rated myself, that is compared with others. Perhaps I only give that impression to Mansini, and that worries me less.

Lori and The Investor certainly do know their stuff.
But to disregard Ken and Trev is silly.

Do I Set Targets? Yes. 10% of my bank each week is stretching enough for me. A business-like approach is essential. I am always aware of how much of my bank I should be risking in any given scenario and never deviate from what I know is statistically correct.
Do I Reach Them? Yes. Much of my own personal success is down to discipline (and this has taken me several years to master). It can be frustrating when the opportunities seem few and far between, but I do not bet for the sake of it. If I did then I would be "gambling" and throwing away the advantage I have over the bookies or fellow punters.

Setting realistic targets is a must for any serious business person. In order to achieve maximum results one must challenge themselves to see what they are capable of. Many don't set targets because of fear of failure, a trait of perfectionists. Others don't set targets due to fear of success, generally those who like to live in a comfort zone. Either state is not a good one to be in long term. Targets are a must to take one out of their comfort zone and if target not reached, it can be reviewed to see where improvements can be made and improvements can always be made.

Investor Past performance analysis is all very fine and good. But just be careful that you don't spend so much time looking over your shoulder, that you don't see the big, nasty object right in front of your nose. Could hurt somewhat.

Mansini You have to try to give up all that wine, women and song. You'll never be a great gambler and do all that. Argentine must be great to live and play in, but probably too great eh ? Do you live there or is it Brazil ? I forget.
