Hi, finally decided to go full time on BF and will be starting tomorrow, playing the place market, both I/R and pre-off; will be coupling this will some stateside action and hopefully making enough to support myself with.

Starting bank will be €2500 and depending how I do with this, I may / may not deposit another 15K in around 2 months when I move from Ireland to Spain.

Will post daily p/l in this thread with the idea that it may help some discipline issues I occassionally have.

Cheers.

If you have discipline issues then it's not a great idea to go pro..imo of course,

if you haven't already proven to yourself that you can make it pay, you shouldn't go pro

imho.

Yes, this will be sole income. Although I have 'tilted' and blown large percentages of my roll on occassions, the 15K I have banked is around 60% gambling profit, + as I'm only 19 I feel there's still time to train myself to take an unlucky loss without tilting. If I can conquer this I'm sure I'll do ok.

Cheers.

what are your monthly living costs then?

do have separate money to pay for them?

because you will need it if you are serious.

Hi, finally decided

Love the use of 'finally' when you are 19 years old :)

I'll be living with parents for the first 3 months, so rent will be quite low (or at least I hope so!). After that I'll be on my own. Will be withdrawing around €900 each month which should be more than enough to cover all costs. Apart from that there are no real back up plans; left a college course for a job in racing which I then left to pursue this :( . Off to bed now as there are quite a few races tomorrow, cheers for the replies.

Good luck JLS, I made the same move to go full time back in Feb 2008, but gave up approx Nov 2008, having made no head way. Spent the next 6 months working back in the real world on and off, and also studying hard on BF to try and work out why it's so damned hard to succeed. Started full time again in summer 2009 and haven't really looked back since then, but I believe my failure first time round was essential to my success today, as I learnt so many things about money management, staking discipline, anger management, knowing when to fold 'em so to speak etc, which I guess we all basically sum up as discipline.

So are you dedicated to the cause, no offence but you sound a bit young to be fully committed.

When you say withdrawing £900 a month , you mean from your betting money?

Really can't see how that will work tbh . So you have to make £900 a month on average just to maintain your betting funds at the same level.

I was in a similar position in 2008 , not because i was 'going pro' , just couldn't be bothered getting a job :) . From May 2008 (when i quit work) to November, on average , i made £500 a month from betting . At the end of that time i had 4 or 5 thousand less than when i started due to rent, bills and so on totalling a hell of a lot more than £500. So the betting 'bank' just dwindles away even while you are winning .Then 2 months without winning left me almost penniless.

To realistically expect to average £900+ a month winnings you would need a lot more than 15K imo.

But really the key thing is to have separate money that will cover all your living costs for a year at least.

All depends how "good" they are T...... If sufficient edge re horses, then with £15,000 bank over all he could make far in excess of £900 IMO. Football is harder probably.....

At 19 though I strongly doubt there being sufficient "edge" re horse racing to win......chances are the bank will be lost. IMO it can take years to gather together sufficient "edge" to win on horses..........football is far less complicated to have knowledge on, though again years experience of watching football , not just in UK, and perhaps having played football, would add to such experience.

IMO ....get a job......and build up knowledge on sport you are "good" at, before going full time at it.

There's a young fellow in his 20s who's making a mint out of here. Adam somebody. He does trading, which I can never manage. Good luck to him, though, and to you.

I take it you've proved, to yourself, that you can generate the neccessary profits on a part time basis?
I notice you've only been on betfair around six months which is not long at all, even if you've been winning over this period so i'd advise caution.
If you are determined to go ahead only use the £2500, and don't withdraw any money for the first three months, and see where your bank is after that period. Don't even think about depositing the 15k, even if your bank recedes. I'd say if your bank isn't at the £5000 mark after that period you should get yourself a job, easier said than done i know, and concentrate on betfair on a part time basis. Good luck

I forgot to ask, do you play from home when playing the place market in running?
When you say you'll be playing pre off my concern would be, if you're playing from home, that you use the i-r place market to attempt to get out of pre race trades that have gone against you which is not a great idea. Apologies if i'm wrong.

Thanks for all the advice / input. I've had this account on BF for 6 months, but have been familiar with BF for alot longer; Also I got into racing when I was very young so dont think that lack of experience / knowledge is a problem. Buzzer, I play I/R from home and have never had many problems, even with the delay; Of course I limit myself to the longer race as 5F etc can be quite tricky on a 4 sec delay :)

Cheers.

By:

We haven't decided yet. Originally we planned to go to a place called Nerja but with the recession etc we're going to have to find somewhere less expensive. The plan is to drive across spain visiting a few places we have in mind until we find the right the right location. Anything's better than Dublin!

Nope, I couldn't really justify 6K a year or whatever it is when I do fine with normal pics, I usually make my play in the first quarter of the race anyway. @ ZEALOT - are you saying im lonely pmsl :D

Well without reading the whole thread at least he didnt mention some secret loophole,... so maybe he has a clue or two,....

GL Anyways,.... hope you have the necesarry amount of investment money to do this cause 2500 looks like a bad idea if you intend to pay bills from your potential winnings.... imo

I dont intend to pay for my outgoings from the 2500, this is more a trial run to decide whether to deposit 15K (and that would be what id be using to pay the bills with, hopefully).

Anyway, today has gone ok-ish, will post p/l after Kempton / stateside is over.

Oh and cheers for your input Duncan :D, time will tell.

Don't listen to all these negative comments. To succeed in life you have to take a gamble or two and if you lose your coin so what, at least you have had a do. All the best pal.

To be a professional gambler in my eyes would be the best job in the world its living a dream and if living the dream costs you 15k then so be it im not saying thats not alot of money but it wont be the end of the world. So many people want to knock you down before you start i say go for it make it work. Its better to have tried and failed than never to have tried

Poor stuff today, was far too cautious in alot of races. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. House sale should be finalized tomorrow also so hopefully be in spain in a month or so.

Duncan, can you give me a reason why I'm destined to fail here? I'm well aware it's going to be difficult to make a living from gambling but if other people can, why can't I?

Cheers.

Jet way too many bets m8, better to have 1 or 2 strong bets a day than alot of weak ones, just my opinion, wish you luck :)
By:
JetLoneStar
When: 11 Feb 10 01:26
I can see why alot of people prefer to have a smaller amount of bets, but there are alot more opportunities in the place rather than the win market that I would consider 'strong bets'. Plus with I/R a chance can present itself in almost every race.

Hopefully tomorrow will go better :)
