Report lurka July 16, 2026 11:10 AM BST
You don't put Mainoo on to defend a lead. Ultimately I think playing in Miami after Mex caught up with the players and they were knackered the last half hour.

I don't think the gameplan was to defend so deep for half an hour. That was caused by Arg pushing men forward and England back plus fatigue imo. He went ultra defensive on 82 mins only, brought Konsa on for Gordon and played a back 5 on 72 mins as Gordon was pushed back so far he was playing as a defender anyway.

You have to look at Pickford for the first goal and the massive amount of space in the Arg right channel just outside the box while playing 5-4-1 and everyone back to defend a corner (which wasn't swung into the box). Where were the players who should have been in that space? That is Bellingham's space but he may have been defending the other side of the box for the corner.

For the second goal Spence gets a kick, possibly a foul, and immediately stops defending and starts theatrics. You can't do that in a WC SF injury time. WTF was he doing?

You can't just blame the manager here. He is not the only one who f'd up.
Report mesmerised July 16, 2026 11:13 AM BST
Guardiola is not the right fit, he can sign players at club level who are technically brilliant from the keeper to the number 9, i.e. players who pass, move and turn in very quick time and in very tight spaces, players who constantly shift position to make themselves available to a teammate when they receive the ball, the triangles, England doesn't have that make up and we can't sign players for it. Our two best technical players are Phil Foden and Cole Palmer, Pep had Foden benched all season long bar a brief spell and made little effort to keep Palmer, if he doesn't rate our two best technical players what hope have the rest of the team got ?

We are a power play team, that's the characteristics of England, two quick wingers on either side, Gordon/Rashford and Saka/Madueke, full backs who like to bomb on and no true defensive midfielder who likes to do the dirty work. The anomaly to that is Kane who thinks he's some kind of Quarterback, he fails to show up in every single big game he's ever played bar a Micky Mouse German Cup final.

Pep has ruined English football, his greatest achievement was not all the trophies he won playing out from the back, it was convincing everyone else they could play out from the back with far inferior players, he must have gone home every week laughing his head off after facing and walloping yet another pale imitation of his side. Only Klopps full throttle, high octane style and Arteta's Rugby tactics stopped him and you just know he has a begrudging respect for that despite patting other managers on the back for playing pretty football.

He stole the soul of the English game by taking us away from the entertaining, attacking football we all knew, which may have been less sophisticated but was far more enjoyable, now the league is full up of copy cat continental managers boring us to tears with a possession based game, the fans come to the stadium with all the energy but it's quickly sapped out of them as they're forced to watch sideways and backwards football.

I said at the time we should have tried to get Klopp, do you think he would have parked the bus, played 5 at the back and bring on 3 defenders defending a lead for half an hour with only 12% possession from goal til end of game with him in charge? No, he'd have gone for the juggler, worst thing was Tuchel lying, not admitting his mistake, saying he had no regrets, he's only honest when it suits him, need to get rid of this mug as soon as possible, taken the FA and the country for a ride.

Kind Regards.

thats the point Southgate failed to defend leads - we were supposed to be getting a tactically astute coach that didnt just park the bus when we go 1-0 up

Look at Spain last night 1-0 up and not a thought about parking the bus

He means the tendency to fall further and further back when ahead against top sides like Croatia 2018, Italy 2021 and Arg 2026. He is right, it is an English thing and there is no way he instructed his players to play like they did after 1-0. His subs and tactics were probably influenced by it too.

What is the point in replacing attackers like for like when you can't string 2 passes together. Between the England goal and the equaliser England attempted 8 passes and were successful with 2 - a pass from Pickford to Stones and a pass from Stones to Pickford.

Blaming the manager for it all is idiotic. The players were more at fault and even with ultra defensive tactics you can point to major, basic individual errors for both goals - more at fault than the manager.

This mug had 18 months to drill it into the players that they dare not regressed when taking the lead, he literally highlighted in the media several times before the World Cup the exact problems in Euro 2024 and before, the onus is on him, he simply bottled in the big moment with the decisions he made. His job should also have included drumming it in to the players if they did regress and sit deep when ahead he'll take off those players or they wont play the next game or both, if that was ever the real issue. The real issue was his decision making and substitutes, he literally invited Argentina onto the England team by giving up the middle of the park and playing 5 at the back which also clearly sends out a message to the team that 'we need to defend here'.

If you invite wave after wave of attack - what do you think it going to happen? eventually the tired players will end up making basic tired mistakes, England are not the best passing team but bring on fresh legs, bring on attackers and attempt to get the ball as far away from our goal as possible, but his personnel changes simply did not allow for that.

He parked the bus, then when 2-1 down, he threw in a Hail Mary with 180 seconds left on the clock by bringing in two forwards.

He was a rabbit in the headlights at the crucial moment and then  he tried to shift blame onto the players.

FA wont sack him, but they will in 2 years time when he fails us again.

If for example England played Ireland or Scotland Kane’s stats would be different he’d be up park all the time.
We know Mexico, Norway, and Argentina passed England off the park, they did have man sent off in one of they matches, which has to be taken into consideration.

He is right about the DNA. The same thing happened against Italy and Croatia under Southgate, England couldn't string two passes together and you could see the equaliser coming for 15 minutes before it arrived. Southgate didn't make any changes in those games until after the equalisers. We all thought it was down to him and his tactics but it turns out it wasn't.

Tuchel had words with the players at the water break and changed it to a back 5. 10 mins later he had to change it again. There is no way he told his players to defend deep and not try to keep the ball or to leave Enzo and Messi in acres for both goals while having 11 men behind the ball. I think the players were badly fatigued after Mex and Miami but it's not an excuse for completely bottling it like they did.

It's happened under 2 managers in a row now so it's not the manager. I'd say they didn't carry out any of Tuchel's instructions at the water break and that he couldn't believe what he was seeing.

He picked John Stones for this tournament after he had BARELY kicked a ball this season, Harry Maguire who's not the messiah, but was in far better form and match fitness whilst being an asset the other end of the pitch for Corners, was left at home, picked Madueke over Bowen and I say that as an Arsenal fan, Madueke is God-like awful, Bowen much better at stretching defender, one on ones and linking play, Madueke an absolutely limited, 1 dimensional winger who's only asset seems to be pace and the occasional good cross. Saka doesn't get a kick v Argentina whilst apparently being fit. Leaves Kane when he does nothing and so drops deep, again, to get touches of the ball and for everyone to pat him on the back afterwards about how dynamic a player he is, get your fat backside up front you mug you are a forward, went missing in yet another game.

Tuchel actually said 'MAYBE it's the DNA', he didn't even have the gumption to go all the way and say it definitely is the DNA, he tried to muddy the waters instead to confuse people deflect attention away from his poor choices.

Nearly all our players play for continental, possession based managers in teams that do not sit deep, so this DNA stuff is bollox anyway. Just a smokescreen.

He also had 18 months working with these players, 18 months to drum it into them what is expected in pressure moments, what not to do when a goal up, so he brings on a boat load of defenders to a) send out the subliminal message this is what we need to do, defend, defend, defend and b) it invites wave after wave after wave of pressure til eventually our players under pressure end up making basic tired mistakes, Messi moving out wide to find space where there was acres as we'd stuffed the central defence area with, leaving ol' Lionel with acres of space having a field day against a knackered Spence.

He will get another tournament, but Klopp is with Germany now, Zidane with France who won 3 Champions Leagues in a row with Real Madrid, a much harder knock out tournament to win, getting to that final even with home advantage will be difficult, I'd rather they bring in Howe but wont happen til after then. In the meantime this mug needs to learn from how own mistakes even if he hasn't got the balls to admit them in public.

Kind Regards.

I agree when Tuchel mentioned the dna of England players. How many talented England sportsmen win at the sport? England players do not have the grit or the hunger to win eg Tennis, unlike the players from some of the former Russia enclaves. They have been producing tennis (Czech Rep) and football winner (Croatia) despite not having the same superior facilities as the UK or England.

And, watching England at football has always been stressful. Mr Southgate had the best players yet lost to France in The Euro final. Mr Southgate was given the managerial reign for nearly eight long years yet the same disappointment on a regular basis despite gifted favourable passages in tournament.

Mr Southgate would have been sacked if managing any other European country. Mr Southgate has yet to manage a football side since his resignation in 2024.

Lewis Hamilton greatest ever F1 driver, Llando Norris won the title last year, Golf plenty of major winners, England youth teams winning tournaments in the last few years, bucket load of Gold medals at every summer Olympics. Rugby World Cup win etc etc.

Tennis is different because it's badly run, LTA have an unwritten policy to recruit middle class children too posh to push when the going gets tough, listen to 95% of them speak, very plummy voiced, wealthy backgrounds.

English footballers have won untold Champions League medals and league titles, so that analysi that English sportsmen don't win  is just rubbish.

I don't think that's what he means by dna.

I think he means when England players get together and into a winning position in big games as an
England team they go into overly defensive mode, and that's the dna he needs to teach them to overcome.

The manger who said, “let’s not lose trying to be positive our way”

Or something similar went back on that.

He left tired players out of position on the field vs 4 subs from the other.

He’s a runt.

Even yesterday France being on 4 we 1 Watkins for Rashford!

If you look t it it’s sabotage or just bd decisions two matches over!

Bellingham seemed to be dying something to the bench at that water break.

Some very odd substitutions, timing and manpower.

Certainly didn't work in semi, and very late in yesterday's game, but just in nick of time.
