It's like the Euro 2004 team, we had three number 8's playing together with the 6 sitting on the bench. You can put one of those 8's in the 6 role but none of them could really do it, their instinct is to attack.

They've played Liechenstin 8 times in the last 20 odd years, 3 wins each, 2 draws
In recent years, San Marino have lost friendlies to the likes of St. Kitts and Nevis (149th), Andorra (174th), Italy's u20 team twice, lost to Moderna 0-4, St. Lucia (164th), drew with Seychelles (203rd) lost to Malta (166) and drew with Gibraltar (200th) |

Sure but they've won their last 2 matches against Liechtenstein and scored 3 successive matches in Euro 2024 qualifying. Almost like their Golden Generation. That was 2 more goals than Liechtenstein. They've scored in WCQ too, Liechenstein haven't. Most importantly in their recent matches they won home and away. They might have been worse in 19 of the last 20 years, but they are not worse now (imo). Certainly it's baffling how they are not ranked above Liechtenstein now, since they haven't won a competitive game for a while.

I could have played for the cook islands when I was there on holiday
and wouldn't be out of place aged nearly 60. Wouldnt want to play them at rugby though. New Caledonia beat Gibraltar, and only lost by 3 to new zealand so must be getting better. |

I had a marvellous holiday at the Raratonga Beach resort several years ago yhtl.
Hugely enjoyed the Islands and all they offered. |

We stayed in the north, can't remember hotel name, then flew to aitutaki
for a week and then back to raro, where we stayed in aroa beach in south that had ship wreck bar, that was voted best bar in the world shortly before. Amazing place, and wonderful people, love their rugby league. Loads of aussies and kiwis, on cheap holidays, like us in canaries. I'd love to get back one day. |

They are all much of a muchness down near the bottom of the rankings, similar minute populations with barely any registered footballers let alone pro footballers, maybe San Marino beat Liechtenstein because some of Liechtenstein's best players couldn't get time off work
 , some are playing in the fourth tier of Austrian football or the fifth tier of Swiss and German football, they're amateurs. Have to go to work to pack bread at 5am or drive the milk float in the early hours. No doubt like all the other minnow nations at the bottom rung of the FIFA ladder.But for San Marino, if you're losing to an under 20's team, a dot on the map like St. Kitts and Nevis and can't beat the Seychelles you are pretty bad. I've never even bothered to look or try to understand how the FIFA rankings work, though incidentally, I vaguely remember on this forum a few years ago somebody saying that someone had worked out which teams England should be playing in friendlies to improve ranking position which'll improve their seedings for one tournament draw or another, or something like that, yet the FA organised friendly against someone else instead and missed out on top seeds, putting them in a more difficult group, can't remember. Maybe it was the Brazil 2014 World Cup where we were ended up in the group of death with Italy and Uruguay, but either way the fact you can even manipulate things like that is farcical. for a more up to date analogy, Wales accepting to play a friendly against England instead of a more winnable game last week may cost them vital seeding for the WC playoffs because they will lose a handful of points (for losing the match) when next months rankings come out

noticable how quickly compared to EPL/ch LG games,how the odds in play change a lot more quickly in world cup qualifiers as bookies realise they've over estimated the quality of some teams,seen 2 to 7 shots go to 4 to 6 within 20 mins this week,maybe just me,but think in play prices drift much quicker after over cautious pre game prices

Nearly 100 years after the first World Cup and still we're absolutely no where near any African or Asian country winning the World Cup, they just haven't evolved, a lot of the players play in top leagues and have done for years, strange. The only guarantee at next years World Cup is that it'll be won by either a European or South American side, keeping with tradition of bouncing the Jules Rimet back and forth between the two continents' for the last 96 years.

You have to go down to the 17th favourite to find the first African or Asian team in the outright betting, which is currently Japan @ 80/1 then Morocco 19th fav at the same price. That's where African and Asian nations are right now on the World stage, they should be much closer in 2025

domestic games haven't really advanced as all the money is in Europe (Saudi but only for end of career and purely money)...
they don't have anything like the same commitment to development of talent in Africa..the talents come to Europe and get developed here but the sides are always a few short on top quality.. |
