Sarina has given huge "I'd rather be a lucky general than a good general" vibes all tournament. Spain and their death by a 1000 passes wont work against England's rope-a-dopers, that's the extent of my technical breakdown for this match.

Backing England.

you wouldnt be aiming to be ahead for 4 minutes and 52 seconds in the ko rounds. therefore to get through in those circumstances massive dollops of luck are required. and also the corollary of luck which is shithouse opponents and england have had plenty of those. they couldnt do it all themselves they needed their opponents to help them and they certainly all did that

Anyone who plays EPL at 15 or 16 is playing u16 at about 13. That Swiss game was not the national team, it was a club side against their own u15s.

England did very well to win, they weren't the better side but Spain are like the men were until recently, loads of possession and not good enough in the final third, KO'd on pens. Awful pens again, most at an awful height and telegraphed. The England keeper (who was a bigger hero than Kelly) was halfway across the goal for the ones she saved.

You are allowed move on the line, very few pens I've seen at these euros had any attempt to outsmart the keeper and send her the wrong way.
Report Des Pond July 27, 2025 9:57 PM BST
Spain should have won, but they let England back into the game and England did what they needed to do to win. Most of the pens on both sides were terrible; nowhere near the corner, at a nice height for the keepers and far too soft.
The first half was quite good, then Spain got scared and it became scrappy which suited England fine.
The pundits, comms and presenters are beyond awful, and I watched most of the coverage with the sound turned off.

Finding better athletes with the same football
ability will help any team.

The girls in England football team deserve extra praise
as they grew up in an era of no woman's football on tv,
very few football clubs for girls too. And zero girls
football at school.

A young girl with athletic ability would be channeled
into netball or gymnastics or swimming or athletics.

Loads of clubs to do that with friends and like minded
girls.

Still showing ability lottery funding becomes available
so our most athletic lasses were unlikely to
end up playing football

They ended up playing football because they loved it. Against
all odds.

Different now of course and lottery funding is setting
up footy clubs for girls all over the UK, not just
Engerland.

Give it a decade and see how the game improves....

I repeat that when I see a CL club fielding a woman in their side I’ll accept that the women’s game has achieved some real quality.
Of course that day may not be far off.  Who’s to say that someone in FIFA doesn’t get the right sort of incentives to rewrite the laws of the game and bring in an “every club must sign five women and play at least two in every match” rule.
Much funnier things have happened.
