By pure chance I once got inside knowledge on a transfer deal. Passed it on, shared it around, as incredible as it seemed. Nothing happened bar a constant barrage of “ you know pluck all you plonker”. You know the drill. Then the news broke and he signed. God that was sweet!

I remember the super greyhound you have taken as your nom de plume. I like to have an ante post bet on the Derby and remembered he had been second the year before when favourite for the final so backed him at 40/1 for the 2008 race. Upon checking the first round results i saw that he had not finished in the first three in his heat and so cursed and mentally threw away my voucher. The next weekend i was surprised to see him line up in the second round, seemed some 4th places (as he had finished in) still qualified to make up the correct number going through. Of course he won every race after that including the final, one of my more successful ante post wagers  |

No, there was no market Dixie.
On the Loyal Honcho front, happy, happy days. Particularly in his semi! They bet the railer like it was home and hosed but Honcho came away, like the final led around and won well. I remember ( can’t for the life of me remember what the programme was ) Seamus being interviewed as he got out of the car and, going round to the back, opening the door and out floated this quite magnificent looking specimen. The dog didn’t have a care in the world, so, so relaxed. The only dog that ever looked better as an athlete ( to me ) was Ballymac Vic. I remember a top flight midlands trainer relating how Seamus had told him once you’ve got a dog right leave it alone and he didn’t ( at the time ) understand it but he learned! How many dogs do you see paraded for a final and they’ve been overtrained and are as tight as a drum. Happy memories indeed. |

As soon as he trapped well and led at the first bend i knew my winnings were coming in Honcho. As you say lovely looking dog as well.
I used to be a regular at Maidstone dogs back in the late 70s and 80s but lost interest to some extent when the stadium was sold off to developers. Whisper Wishes was the best ever dog trained there and he won the 1984 Derby , the last one held at White City. My interest was rekindled by Sky showing plenty of good meetings. the 2000s were great with LH and of course Westmead Hawk and the like. |

Yeah, Whisper Wishes. I remember it well. I can picture the trainer but his actual name eludes me. A very astute, shrewd cookie as I recall. Great time for us as you say.
Thanks for reminding about the 4th place btw. I had forgotten that. One of the oddities of qualification at the time. He just made run up the back straight in his next run that blew me away and I thought “he’s on this year again” then bet him race by race. I remember not that long ago only two qualifying and a trainer’s dog going out first round having run third just .04 behind the existing track record! |

Liverpool have signed 18-year-old defender Giovanni Leoni from Italian side Parma for a fee of £26m plus add-ons.
Leoni, who Reds boss Arne Slot confirmed the club had agreed a deal for earlier this week, has signed a contract until 2031. The Italy Under-19s centre-back began his career at Padova and had a short spell at Sampdoria before joining Parma last summer. Leoni played 17 games in his first campaign in Serie A last season, attracting interest from both Milan clubs, but has opted for a move abroad. He said it was "not possible to say no" to Liverpool. A lot to unpack. Firstly, he's under contract, one he willingly signed. Secondly, and I've experienced this as have a million players, he's alluding to ( on signing that contract) the old "do well and if someone offers £80m for you we'll let you go. Answer to this of course is a buy out clause that both parties agreed to. Thirdly, he's doing something every modern ( and I hate it) player does. Down tools, don't take the very old school route of transfer request if he wants out which he won't do as it means giving up a large chunk of bonus/loyalty/salary. In short, modern players want to leave, be paid on leaving and on signing for a new club. Cake meets eating it. If Newcastle said to him and his agent a year ago " we'll let him go if he has a great season " but it wasn't written down, tough on Isak. If the player wants to leave but doesn't want to go on the transfer list, then that's the player wanting that cake and eating it. If he's desperate to leave, put in a request, that alerts every club on earth of his availability ( if Newcastle accept it, and that should because no club wants a player who doesn't want to stay publicly/officially) he forfeits some cash but he's outta there pronto. Newcastle can play hardball and make him fulfill his contractual obligations but they'll lose money month on month plus they'll need a replacement who does want to play for Newcastle. I'd sack the agent if I'd received the advice he has, because his contract didn't have a " if you do well you can go at £xxxx", he's basically been on strike for a couple of weeks ( what's the agent doing to get him and club to agree an exit strategy???), an agent several weeks in should advise pulling the transfer list rip cord ( " you're going to lose some dough but your next club will make it up ") etc etc. And any public statement can be used in any tribunal against the ayer do advise him to keep it shut. Piss poor agent work, naive player, "possible" renaging ( pure speculation at this point) on handshake by club, a football transfer room 101 in how not to handle a febrile situation. |
