It certainly was.
Southgate does have his good points, in that he's got the squad united and playing for him. |
|
By:
well I'm hardly a massive Southgate fan..
but player unity and players actually wanting to turn out for England and enjoying being part of it is a big deal.. he's certainly tactically naïve and probably too conservative at times but no manager in my lifetime has managed to get anything like the max out of England sides (Robson and Venables included) |
|
By:
player unity counts for nothing if tyou win fick all and dont get the best out of the squad you have
shitgate scores heavily on both counts robson and veneables wd have done so much better if they had had the current players at their disposal only speculation of course but you only have to look at how enfgland play under shitgate to know that he is totally incompetant he certainly has the luck of seven devils thats for sure |

They would be back home already eating vindaloo without player unity
of the 3 lions, this time (more than any other time), we're going all the way, we're on the ball, and it's coming home! Set the world in motion. |

He has had kind draws, but looking back in time, so did a lot of other managers who failed, where Gareth has at least succeeded in making the tournament let alone the semis and finals
2016: Hodgson, lost to Iceland in 2nd Round of Euro 2016 2008: McClaren, failed to qualify for the Euros. 2000: Keegan, lost in the groups in Euro 2000 to Romania 1994: Taylor, failed to qualify for World Cup in 94 by drawing to Poland and gaining 1 point from 4 against Norway, finished bottom of the group in Euro 92 without winning a game. 1988: Robson, knocked out in the groups finishing bottom, lost to Ireland, failed to qualify for Euro 84 losing to Denmark and drawing to Greece at home 1974: Alf Ramsey, failed to qualify for the World Cup by drawing against Wales and getting 1 point from 4 against Poland 1976: Revie, failed to qualify for the Euros Southgate is not an elite manager but he's done better than all of the above who had good draws but failed at tournaments a lot sooner or in some cases, didn't qualify at at all. Sven, Glenn and Venebles were all unlucky losing to only good teams and on penalties, plus that flukey goal from Ronaldinho. Though he did pick a half fit Beckham for that tournament and he jumped out of a tackle to protect his foot to lead which led to Brazil scoring. |

Err Southgate ain't done better than sir alf.
Victory on Sunday still leaves him behind, hopefully he leaves it there and gives a.n.other the chance to match Alf. |
|
By:
Any half decent manager would've got Engerland to at least the final.
It took him 4 games to realise that playing the best player on current form out of position wide left wasn't smart. |

England will be pressed like they have never been pressed before
A mistake or a goal on the break will be their downfall |
|
By:
I think a performing English team will still come under intense pressure from a similar Spanish team. As such, I've backed spain for fun (hopefully put the mockers on them).
I think Mr Southgate has been pants managing England with very good players comparable to The Europeans in the last 4 years. But, the team deserves a major trophy after so many disappointments at the crucial stages. However, this game will be their toughest (tougher than against France) against this Spanish side. |

Spain will win this comfortably. 3-0, without much sweat on show.

England were pressed by Slovakia first half and couldn't cope. In the last 15 Slovakia were tired and sat back.
I can only see England winning on pens, where I would give them an edge due to their preparation and Spain's recent record on pens. England played well first half against Holland but only because they went behind. It was the same against the Swiss until they equalised and France at the WC and Denmark at the last euros. Southgate is not going to come out and play like that from the off. He never does. Spain were content to keep possession rather than go for a third against France once they went ahead on 25 mins. If they don't get out of sight against England then England will always have a chance at equalising late on. But I think Spain will win by 2 or more. |
|
By:
I'm expecting Spain to score in both halves. I also expect England to be chasing possibly get a penalty for their effort; 2-0 or 3-1 , my prediction.
|
|
By:
I'm sitting on an outright Spain at 6s...not aftertiming, posted on a thread on here 4 weeks ago... So will be pleased either way
I think the betting is about right, it's a 60/40 call, based on Spain being the better team and Southgate being the luckiest manager, otherwise 80/20,imo I will have mixed feelings if we win simply because of all the plaudits a negative, unimaginative manager will get In baldy shop this morning Spain pushed out to 7/4 for the 90 minutes Don't know if he's holding it until the match starts |
|
By:
Also, btts in 90 minutes at Evens looks a bet to me
|
|
By:
7/4 Spain is very backable for 90 mins. I can see Spain scoring at least one goal possibly taking a lead into half-time. At the moment I'm waiting for some juicy boosts from bookies tomorrow.
|
|
By:
i would not agree that spain are the better team.....have definitely put up better performances and merino's header to win against germany was a thing of beauty but if olmo can be stifled and yamal rough up a bit....the rhythm of spains play can be interrupted to such an extent that frustration could be introduced which will allow england opportunities to dominate......southgate needs to have lunch with ronald koeman to learn how that can be achieved....
|
|
By:
Winja, you're assessment is more accurate than mine
Spain have put in the better performances rather than perhaps having a better team/squad The difference is that they get the ball forward and into attacking positions a lot quicker than England do As I've said before, for all that, it doesn't translate into enough goals... Morata is not a top class number 9...with the chances they create someone like Haaland would be banging in 2 or 3 every game |
|
By:
our slow play is down to the reluctance to play the forward ball after the run has been made and once that moment has passed the player has no option other than to sideways or backwards pass with our attacking players then out of position....stones is one of the guilty along with walker and shaw....for all the good things those players do.....that aspect of their play is killing our momentum....
|
|
By:
ive done 2-0 and 3-0 to spain for correct score
|
|
By:
If John Terry is in an England shirt you know a trophy is about to be raised.
It's a funny old game, Spain could be ordinary if England get stuck in. |
|
By:
id normally lump on spain but england must have fate on their side
|
|
By:
Best of luck to you guys. You would've taken a once off game against anybody to lift the trophy before the tournament started. You have that now. Not all us Paddy's are sitting in front of the tv praying you lose BTW.
|
|
By:
England would take penalties just now, Spanish wouldn't. Cup finals are difficult to win, wimbledon beat liverpool, but individually and collectively the Spanish are far superior to England, hope the good guys cuff them by 3 but i think it will be closer than that as finals are hard to win.

Post the Trump incident and given England vs Spain , worth googling the ' War of Jenkins Ear ' . Amusing sideline ,

C'mon England. I was at the game on Wednesday, without doubt the greatest sporting atmosphere I've ever been involved in. Same again please Ollie.

By:
Everything to play for. Plenty of good players on both sides. Spain have their ducks in a row and we do not until about 80 minutes.
I wouldn’t predict as like most people here I am clueless. I think France dominated for spells and two or three great chances to draw the match. I think Spain have some fantastic players in midfield and yet. I hope we attack down flanks with pace and skill but I do not see where quick ball is coming from. If we can retain the ball we have a chance but can we? I just hope we play with some swagger and Bellingham has his big boy pants on. There were signs in the last game he was leaving Foden to run things then linked up on the left in good positions. |

Been very workmanlike so far.Can see us turning it right on
tonight if we go for it.Got the makings of a cracker,3-2 England. |

robson and venerbles both had better denders than southgate has at his disposal, stones mguire dunk and co wouldnt have got near previous eng squads.southgate has no allround midfielder in the class of bryan robson, rice is just a breaker up of attacks(albeit a good one). pon the fliup side southgates had an embarrassment of attack min.ded players.im no fan of southgates "lets concede fewer goals rather than score more goals than them" approach. his big plusses are he gets the squad together better and moreover hes LUCKY so lets get lucky tonight
|
|
By:
True he has a plan with limited resources. I hope he makes the changes sooner tonight. We need our talent on the pitch when the game opens up if we are still in it that is.
