The thread is about big matches. His record is pretty poor in those.
Report tobermory May 1, 2024 12:52 AM BST
Depends on how you define 'big matches' for Kane.

Easy to cherry pick to make case for or against.
Report lurka May 1, 2024 11:35 AM BST
Make a case for then.

His record in SFs and Finals is v poor. His record in NLDs is good 14 in 19 games but half of them were penalties and Arsenal were largely poor during that time. Another penalty v Arsenal for Bayern, another one last night in a SF. Scored in a Euros SF v Denmark, a rebound from a missed penalty in ET. His record against the other big clubs in the PL wasn't great either, unless you want to count Leicester.

Not that I've checked, but I would assume that goes for all top players lurka. The better the opposition, the harder it will be for any striker, no?
Report geeezer May 1, 2024 12:27 PM BST
Since. Haaland been in Pl has he turned up for any big matches, his record against the "Big 5" city being the 6th is awful, Didt score in last yrs champs league final, Kane is a very good Striker!

Top man brilliant striker, and indeed a very good all rounder. Pity he didn't opt for Ireland. That would have quietened a lot of the bashing.
Report scandanavian_haven May 1, 2024 5:12 PM BST
how can you compare big 6's across eras?

When people say Kane doesn't turn up for big matches, they think of missing the penalty against France, being anonymous in the CL final (was barely fit tbf), games against top 4-6 opposition throughout the season is not really what determines turning up for big games, it's the critical games, like Mbappe who scores hat tricks in World Cup finals and  a pen when it mattered.
Report scandanavian_haven May 1, 2024 5:13 PM BST
You can go back through the era's and pick out any top England player who didn't turn up in the match where England were knocked out, because they were knocked out
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- May 1, 2024 5:34 PM BST
Mbappe scored a hat trick and they lost.

But he was quiet whilst Argentina dominated.

Had he turned up from start he wouldn't have scored
a hat trick and Messi wouldn't have won a world cup, perhaps.

Tough to decide, innit, did Bobby charlton fail to
turn up for 1966 final or did he have a great game
allowing the battles to be won elsewhere?
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- May 1, 2024 5:38 PM BST
BTW, I've been critical of Kane in the past in latter
stages of tournaments for England. But, he gets
special attention and others need to step up, too.

Easy to direct frustration at him, but he's a great
striker, finisher,

Still a chance to step up..
Report penzance May 1, 2024 5:39 PM BST
Like him or not,Kane's a class player.
Report 11kv May 1, 2024 5:57 PM BST
Agreed^^
Report scandanavian_haven May 2, 2024 12:55 AM BST
Mbappe score 4 in the final, whatever else he done in the match that is what you call turning up to a big game, scoring when it matters, Kane has the ability but whenever the question is asked of a player, that in itself usually tells you there's a question mark there, there's no reason why he can't score in a big final, but he's rarely played in one, and the one he did play in, he was unfit.
Report lurka May 2, 2024 11:01 AM BST
Kane is not the type of player who is going to fashion a goal out of nothing himself, like Mbappe can.
He is easier to keep quiet, doesn't have the pace to run in behind or the quick feet to take on and beat top defenders. In most big games it's his team who is outplayed and he is starved of service.
Largely not his fault but you can't say he turns up for these games at the same time.
