I'm quite interested in how much sevco will get in comp for Gerrard ?, Celtic got 8.8 Million from Leicester for Rodgers, won't be that much I imagine, but it would be a kick in the nuts for wee sevco if he had a clause that meant he could go to a prem team for free, but we can hope

any thoughts of lampard getting a job to where?

A bit daft mid season but Rodgers went with like 8 games to go giving up another league medal?

Daily Record saying 2-3m is the release clause, If that's true, Gerrard's played a blinder there, total mercenary, didn't give a f**k about sevco, used them as a stepping stone, I did warn sevco about this. |

This a man who was born and married into Catholic institutions, who's 2nd team was Celtic as a lad and who even has a daughter named Lourdes, yet he still took the sevco job, knowing the bigoted environment that comes with it, he will have no issues in going up against Liverpool if it means him furthering his career. |

Congrats to (Ex Sevco Manager) Stevie G on signing a 3 1/2 year deal at Aston Villa, apparently taking ALL his backroom staff with him and only costing his new club 2.5 M for the privilege. He has absolutely stuffed his old club and for that I salute him.

If he was offered the Newcastle job and turned it down ,it seems strange that he would take the Villa job .unless the toon job was to big for him .
|
|

Well that did not go well, not many would have predicted he would have accepted an English Premiership relegation battle over a SPL title shootout. Both Celtic and Rangers fans should now realise that the SPL is now a stepping stone to mediocracy into the EPL. Celtic and Rangers lost managers to middle rate EPL teams with smaller fan bases but larger revenue streams, a sad indictment for the SPL.

zero chance he was offered Toon job.
Villa would be more his level |
|

You'd have to wonder if there are any financial issues going on in the background at Rangers.
Gerard has basically taken Villas hand off so quick was he in accepting the offer |
|
By:
there are well-documented major financial issues

Rangers will receive compensation from Aston Villa, understood to be in the region of £4.5m.

That's around 1% of what Dean Smith wasted in the transfer market

Bad move for Gerrard. What is the very best he can achieve there with their finances ? 9th or 10th but that is pretty much what they achieved last season under Smith. To get higher in the league like top 4 they would need to spend another 400million and the owners aren't the same as the PIF that bought Newcastle.

Oh don't you know? It's nothing to do whatsoever with the players who are actually on the pitch kicking the ball. Oh no, Gerrard is this great manager (he won the league in a two horse race so he must be!) so therefore if you've got a good manager he could take over the 'Dog & Duck' pub team and they'd win the Premiership. The fact the players wouldn't be good enough has absolutely nothing to do with it.
Villa are a mid table side roughly so give him a year with the same players and they'll probably end up ........... mid table! |
|
By:
Villa were a mid table team with Grealish, they are a bottom 6 without. Gerard has to be everything and more to maintain that team in the top half of the premiership without spending significantly.
|
|
By:
Of the 3 epl jobs that became available I would say Villa is the most attractive. Less pressure/media focus than the toon job. Less peril/danger of going down than the canaries job. I think Villa have a decent squad add a bit more creativity in the middle of the park and a new LB top 8 IMO

The very best players don't want to play in Scotland. You have some chance getting them to Villa.

I have to agree that the Villa job would be the best choice out of those 3 clubs.

I'd stay at Rangers
he has a job there for life if he wants it stay until he has a good run in Europe, then try to get a job like Arsenal or Spurs |

DM headline: Aston Villa appoint Steven Gerrard as their new manager as Premier League strugglers land No 1 target following Dean Smith's sacking... with Liverpool legend waving goodbye to Rangers after hugely successful three-year stay.
"Hugely" successful? Who is kidding who? Managers have been sacked for winning more trophies! lmao. Welcome to the Championship - again - Aston Villa. |

I think he did a very good job at Rangers. Stopping 10 in a row, generating over £30m in Euro revenues over the last 2 seasons for a club in a very bad financial situation and Rangers played a major role in improving Scotland's club co-efficient meaning that the champs are likely to get an automatic CL group stage place next season. If Rangers win the league that will be more revenues that they badly need. To put it in context the SPL champs get something like £4m in TV money for winning the league. Euro football is where the money is for Scottish clubs.
His prime targets were winning the league and doing well in Europe and he did both. |
|
By:
He was never really going to be exposed at Rangers.
At least now we will start to find out whether he is a dud or not? What is the barometer of success? Fans always want more than you might reasonably expect. |

By:
money problems at rangers
43 million loss last year 40 million for qualifying ch lg if they dont win league = fooked |

You're much closer to the truth than even you know differentdrum. Not only did Celtic hand them the title on a plate by shooting themselves repeatedly in the foot throughout the season every other club underperformed individually, and all in the same season. It was a Leicester City type league win - totally out of the blue and never ever to be repeated. Actually, to be more accurate, it was a Blackburn Rovers type of league win - once in a lifetime followed by an exodus of talent and finance.

By:
You're spot on lurka.
Some, mainly celtic supporters, try to bury their heads in the sand looking for excuses. Rangers were a much improved team last year both domestically and in Europe and that annoys the them. Us winning the league by a country mile and stopping 10 in a row* was a bitter pill for celtic and their fans to swallow and they still haven't got over it. We say 10 in a row but it was really nine and three quarters as they were gifted a title that was there to be won. |

Those in the know up here knew Gerrard was a false messiah, 1 in 9 trophies at sevco? Not a good record. His team used to collapse after Christmas up here as well, having a touch of deja vu here with Villa. 1 win in 8 for Stevie G now, 1 win this year, can't say the board didn't back in the transfer window now can he?
