only twelve seconds if live score clock is reliable but far from certain about that

I've taken the free trial, although only for December. I'll get these midweek games and Boxing Day games for nowt, with the bonus of free delivery for christmas presents etc. It's about 31 seconds behind digital radio, which is quite a few seconds behinds medium wave, so probably abot 40 seconds or so altogether. So, probably less of a lag than Now TV, which isn't saying much.

if it was really cheap then some people might think i can watch the games not only cheaper but in the comfort of my own home, keeping it relatively high would stop lots of people doing that if that is indeed the fear, otherwise there's no reason not to, why would the premier league punish its uk viewership who want to be able to watch a game without illegally streaming it. it makes better business sense to open something up where it's a monthly or a yearly sub and you can watch every single game, like the nfl does, like the nba does. simon jordan has been talking about this recently, the netflix of football. the premier league needs it

Went a lot better than I expected by all accounts.

Some bloke on talksport was suggesting that the PL should set up a netflix like service and sell the rights themselves. This should have happened years ago. He said that 100m subscribers worldwide paying £9 a month would be £11bn a year. One major thing he forgot to add was advertising revenue on the channel.

But they should go further and set up a TV channel too. BT, Sky and Virgin etc would go out of business overnight if they didn't have this channel on their platforms and they would actually pay the PL to host it rather than the other way around. This would massively reduce the cost to fans while generating way more cash for the PL and would avoid any issues with streaming.

The fact that these companies pay no tax says it all about how powerful they are. They generate more per annum than large countries. They are too big and should all be broken up. No company needs to be that big or that rich. Will never happen though.

"Some bloke on talksport was suggesting that the PL should set up a netflix like service and sell the rights themselves."

That was Simon Jordan ex Crystal Palace chairman

the premier league must have run the numbers and by keeping demand higher than supply they are able to sell their more premium product for effectively £9m per match. interestingly, though, the amount BT and sky paid for football this year was lower than in previous years so perhaps we are seeing the premium-ness decrease which could lead to us seeing a netflix-style subscription for the premier league, which no doubt will be in collaboration with Amazon

Amazon or Netflix have the infrastructure to deliver it immediately. But they should just set up their own channel and cut them out completely. Sky and BT get all the ad revenue - how much would that be worth worldwide on top of £11bn? Sky and BT are already using broadband subs to pay for their football and they can't go any higher. Amazon could but some people seem to think they are going to charge £7.99 a month which is nonsense.

Cut out the middleman and take all the sub and ad revenue for themselves. They could be as big as Netflix or Amazon and probably charge a bit more per month than them too. They have a product which is more valuable than normal TV so why lump it in with that and have a middleman making billions instead of them? The set up costs would be recovered in the first year.
Report Shrewd_dude December 4, 2019 12:11 AM GMT
I don't think it's as easy as it sounds. The FA and clubs would likely have to have to take a big hit financially in the short term. Disney are throwing billions at their own streaming service and it's expected to take 5 years before they make a profit on it.
Report n88uk December 4, 2019 12:54 AM GMT
The model already exists in the US with all their major sports. Hard to know exactly what stops it happening right now, but for one I imagine someone would have to put up an absolute boatload of cash to get the investment started which narrows down the possible providers immediately.

It seems likely we are heading that way anyway. How long it will take is anyone's guess, this is just Amazon dipping their toes, but if they wanted to take on Sky and BT the latter two would be in trouble and the world is clearly moving more and more towards streaming and on demand services. In many ways you have to dip your toes in first also, as you've got to iron out any potential issues before you go in big.
Report tobermory December 4, 2019 2:09 AM GMT
They are massively deluded if they think they can get 100M subscribers paying £9 worldwide.

Sounds like when they say The FA Cup Final has an audience of 2Billion Laugh

The reality is there are only about 5M paid subscribers for the PL in the UK at most. Maybe you could add 3 million with the cheaper price. But what would you get from France or Germany,Italy ? I'd guess 500k each would be optimistic. And Western Europe is gonna be more interested in English football than most of the rest of the world (and much richer ). I imagine the audience in those countries will watch English games if it is comes with their own league package but would be reluctant to pay for it additionally, rather like UK fans with La Liga.

You might get 5M total from Japan/Korea/USA. China I don't know, but surely not much more. Then the rest of the world countries either have minimal interest in the sport or are too poor to sign up in big numbers.

So I think 20-25M is the upper limit, and that would not leave them with any more revenue than now would it ?
Report lurka December 4, 2019 8:55 AM GMT
Yeah maybe 100m is optimistic but the fact is when you have middlemen worldwide paying billions for the rights they are going to be creaming billions in profit on that investment and at that level it makes sense to consider doing it all yourself. Ad revenue must be a massive number too which nobody seems to have factored in. I think the numbers from Europe would be pretty high at a cheaper price. A lot of the leagues in Europe are boring and uncompetitive and Ireland and Scandinavia particularly have always had a massive interest in English football. The vlue of the foreign rights is growing still whereas it has probably reached saturation in the UK.

If the NFL can do it then that is the way to start it off and take it from there over time. But you could still have a tv channel in the UK at least and none of the major platforms could risk not having this channel. It would be a no-brainer for them. They already use football as a means of protecting their business. They couldn't afford not to have it. That would avoid a lot of the problems like buffering, delay and strain on the broadband network in the UK that come with streaming. You could still sell the foreign rights to foreign channels in the same way they currently do for poorer countries or countries with poor broadband.

To be fair, delay aside, I found the picture to be of excellent quality. I had one short delay midway through the first half of the Palace game (I doubt I missed much) and that was it, it was perfect throughout the rest of the evening. For a cost of £6.59pm (average if paid annually), I personally find Amazon Prime value for money and even more so with this new addition.
Report lurka December 4, 2019 10:45 AM GMT
They are estimated to have paid £90m per year for this package, which is 20 games a season but most of them overlap so you can't watch them all and the ad/sub revenue is limited. It is probably more like 5 or 6 live games in terms of what it's worth as a package. They are not making money on it.

The reality is if they are to take any more of the rights the cost will have to be a lot higher as they will have to make money like the others. I don't get why people are going on about the picture quality either - what do you expect for a paid service? You shouldn't be getting any buffering if you are paying for it. The picture quality is no better than Sky or BT as it can't be. Picture quality is determined by the resolution of your TV/screen primarily. You need a UHD screen to see UHD/4k quality. A HD screen is incapable of showing better than HD quality.

In fairness the NFL model suits them much better because there is nowhere near as much interest in that sport abroad and they find it hard to sell the rights for big money abroad. The times the games are on are not ideal for Europe or Asia either so it is smarter for them to sell to fans individually in terms of foreign revenue.
Report JC1326 December 4, 2019 12:56 PM GMT

Also worth pointing out that the NFL Game Pass is a relatively small revenue stream.

The NFL makes $4.9 Billion a year from the US TV Networks, about 3 times as much as the PL gets from Sky/BT/Amazon. What they get from game pass is just a bonus.

There is no sport that I'm aware of that makes a fortune selling directly to subscribers worldwide without established media partners.

It exists in the US because there sports and teams have almost no competition from outside the U.S. All the teams are in the same boat. If EPL revenue streams suddenly drop by 10-20% then that would affect the top EPL teams ability to compete with the other big clubs in Europe who would remain unaffected. Champions League revenues drop as well and they lose their best players to teams abroad and it could be a downward spiral.
