West Ham United are set to hold a pre-match press conference on Wednesday ahead of their FA Cup clash with Aston Villa but it is unclear who will be in charge, according to The Sun.
The news outlet reported via its print edition [6 January, pg 49] that West Ham are said to be waiting on Graham Potter’s response after it was claimed he is set to take over at the London Stadium [Sean Whetstone]. As it stands, it will be Julen Lopetegui who is expected at the press conference scheduled for 8 January. Lopetegui is still in a job at West Ham but that could change over the coming days or even hours, but The Sun claims that a falling-out with Tim Steidten has done his chances of remaining at the club no favours. |

West Ham United have acted poorly again as they prepare to sack Julen Lopetegui, Jeff Stelling and Ally McCoist have said.
Speaking on talkSPORT (7 January, 6:23am), McCoist and Stelling slammed the Irons’ very public courting of Graham Potter as Lopetegui’s replacement, despite having yet to officially sack the Spaniard. Tim Steidten and David Sullivan held talks with Potter on Monday with Lopetegui still in post following a breakdown of relationship with the German, who also faced scrutiny. McCoist said: “If you’re reading [in] the paper that [Lopetegui] hasn’t been told, that’s as poor as it gets that is.” Stelling replied: “There were pictures in the Guardian yesterday of Tim Steidten, the technical director, in conversation with Graham Potter. |

Wed 8 Jan 2025 08.26 GMT West Ham poised to sack Lopetegui after agreeing longer contract for Potter Lopetegui’s Wednesday press conference cancelled Potter close to finalising deal as manager to 2027 West Ham are poised to sack Julen Lopetegui after talks progressed positively with Graham Potter, who is close to agreeing a two-and-a-half-year contract to take over as the club’s manager. A press conference with Lopetegui scheduled for Wednesday lunchtime was cancelled on Wednesday morning and, barring an unexpected hiccup, Potter will replace him before Friday’s FA Cup tie at Aston Villa. The process stalled on Tuesday because West Ham’s preference was for Potter to take over until the end of the season, whereas the former Brighton and Chelsea manager was pushing for a longer deal. West Ham have agreed in principle to Potter’s demand for a contract to 2027, and although a deal has not been sealed the way is clear for him to return to coaching for the first time since he left Chelsea after seven months in April 2023. Lopetegui is understood to have attended work as usual on Wednesday morning as he awaits confirmation of his departure. He took training on Tuesday despite knowing West Ham had decided to sack him but cancelled a team meal scheduled for Tuesday night. |

West Ham said in a statement: "The first half of the 2024/25 season has not aligned with the club's ambitions, and the club has therefore taken action in line with its objectives."
The club have also parted company with Lopetegui's backroom staff, including his assistant Pablo Sanz, head of performance Oscar Caro, head analyst Juan Vicente Peinado, fitness coach Borja De Alba and technical coach Edu Rubio. "The board would like to thank Julen and his staff for their hard work during their time with the Hammers and wish them every success for the future," the club's statement added. "The process of appointing a replacement is under way." However, in my opinion the major problem Steidten remains. |

Spaniard was always the wrong choice and Potter is walking into a job where surgery is required alongside a clear vision https://www.theguardian.com/football/2025/jan/08/lopetegui-west-ham-challenges-for-graham-potter Julen Lopetegui was always the wrong choice. West Ham were warned against appointing him last May, but they pressed ahead and have paid the price. They are seven points above the bottom three after spending more than £100m last summer, the football has been drab, supporters are disengaged and the only surprise is that it has taken this long for West Ham to part with the Spaniard. So much for a fresh start. West Ham were ready to move on from David Moyes, whose reign ran out of steam last season, but they have made a spectacular hash of the succession plan. Lopetegui was not the coach to oversee a style revolution. West Ham were taken in by a deceptively strong CV. Lopetegui was fired by Spain on the eve of the 2018 World Cup, lasted 14 games at Real Madrid and is not remembered fondly at Sevilla despite winning the Europa League in 2020. They were told he had a history of falling out with people. It was not long before they realised they had made a mistake. It has been a disastrous appointment. West Ham have mustered few decent performances under Lopetegui, whose attempts to introduce an approach based around a high line, possession and inverted full-backs never convinced. They have been slow, incapable of pressing and vulnerable to transitions. Players have struggled to understand their head coach’s messaging. There was surprise at the start of the season with Lopetegui’s emphasis on long switches of play. Sources wondered whether he was so different to Moyes, who was criticised for his counterpunching tactics, and the humiliations have piled up. Awful at the back, West Ham have conceded three goals or more on nine occasions this season. Somehow, though, Lopetegui hung on after losing 3-1 to lowly Leicester last month. Sérgio Conceição was discussed and Graham Potter was close to taking over, only for West Ham to dither and waste more time. Lopetegui, who has chopped and changed without coming close to finding a settled XI, limped on. He has shown an ability to dig out results here and there, although much has depended on the heroics of Lukasz Fabianski in goal and sudden bursts of attacking inspiration from Jarrod Bowen. It would not have taken much for West Ham to be in a much worse position. As it is, they still look unlikely to be dragged into a relegation battle. They have experienced internationals and players capable of making a difference. Potter, who is taking his first job since leaving Chelsea in April 2023, thinks he can work with this squad. |

About time West Ham fans took notice of Tim Steidten who is at least as much to blame yet is hardly ever mentioned by supporters.
Tim Steidten, the technical director, must take some of the blame. Niclas Füllkrug, the 31-year-old Germany striker, has been a bust at £27m. Spending £25m on the Brazilian teenager Luis Guilherme looks indulgent. Konstantinos Mavropanos, the error-prone Greece centre-back, has been a disaster. Max Kilman cost too much from Wolves. Jean-Clair Todibo is a talented defender but questions have been raised about his attitude since his move from Nice. It is no secret he wanted to join Juventus last summer. Finances brought him to West Ham, with his arrival hailed as yet another coup for Steidten, and the Frenchman has not seemed engaged. |
|
By:
Fingers have been pointed at David Sullivan for appointing Lopetegui and questions have been asked about Steidten. Why did the German end up staying away from the training ground under Lopetegui and Moyes? Why are there insiders who struggle to believe the social media hype around Steidten? Lopetegui, it is said, may not be the last high-profile exit. There is a sense Steidten does not have a grasp on English football. This has been a grubby episode, reflecting poorly on West Ham. Lopetegui’s camp are furious about his treatment. They feel he has been undermined and messed around by a technical director lacking in credibility. There is disbelief Lopetegui has been left hanging while his job has been touted around.
Sackings are part of the game, but there are proper ways to conduct business and West Ham’s well-earned reputation for chaos comes from the top. As the largest shareholder Sullivan must bear responsibility for the lack of moral clarity that repeatedly creates these unseemly dramas around managers. It feels as if Steidten, meanwhile, must change his ways if he is to survive. |

If Potter's been following football in his 2 years out he'll know as much about players as Steidten. It's got to be the manager's choice, and if they can go British with any signings so much the better.

Cos fans know the German been
Hand stung by you know who Why take any notice of him cos no body imo Puppets moved by little man at top |

Those fans are not saying anything so that does not help at all. People can't see the wood from the trees.
Steidten is ruining this club and pretending otherwise does no favours at all. Sullivan needs to be told by all of us. |

West Ham have enjoyed success in recent years under previous boss David Moyes - winning the 2022-23 Europa Conference League and competing in the Europa League in the seasons either side of that. While his departure at the end of last season seemed unusual from the outside, there was a feeling Moyes' time at the London Stadium had run its course, with fans calling for a more progressive style. Former Hammers boss Harry Redknapp said: "It's not an easy place to manage - the expectation there is very high. Whoever goes there, not only do they have to produce a winning team, they've got to produce a team that plays what West Ham fans see as the West Ham way." But Murray, who also played for Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest, felt West Ham was a "good fit" for Potter if given the time to implement his own philosophies. "They want a better brand of football to be played at the London Stadium, and I think he'll be able to deliver that," he said. Murray also added "entertaining football" does not just come overnight but Potter has experience of juggling style with substance. In the Premier League era, West Ham managers have been given an average of 32 months in charge - or just over two and a half years. That is longer than Newcastle, Everton, Tottenham and Aston Villa. Sources with an understanding of the situation told BBC Sport Potter had received other offers since leaving Chelsea, but he had chosen West Ham given the stable ownership and a track record of allowing managers time to build. He also felt the club had a good squad compared to others in the lower end of the Premier League and the job felt like a good fit. |

23 points currently, God knows how in truth , only games we really deserved to win would be Ipswich and Palace, maybe Newcastle, but it is 23 points just the same.
If Potter can sign one or two and get the best from the rest I can see a decent second half of the season. It's a funny Premiership this season with the likes of Man U, Spurs in the bottom half with Forest,Bournemouth etc near the top, but i can see a switch nearer normality in the second half. WHU have got a very nice set of home fixtures to come, if we can get some early momentum, Fulham and Palace not bad starters albeit neither of them have lost many at all lately. The average points needed to finish top half in the Prem over the last 10 years is 50.4 points. So not a huge amount more points per game needed than we've got from a stinking first half of the season under a clueless manager. I do think it will probably be above the average this season but even at 52/3 points I think that is achievable. 8-1 is freely available, I've seen worse bets. |

I'm sick of saying it but the main problem Steidten is still there. When are people going to wake up at look at the facts? Over 100 million spent and mostly wasted in his time and falling out with everybody else at the club.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2025/jan/14/west-ham-striker-signings-graham-potter
West Ham’s striker obsession remains unresolved after years of failure Jacob Steinberg West Ham rarely hit the target when they buy a striker. Names such as Mido, Ilan, Benni McCarthy, Jonathan Calleri and Simone Zaza will send a shiver down the spine of Hammers supporters, who must despair at the same old mistakes being made over and over again. This has been a constant theme since David Sullivan and the late David Gold bought the club in January 2010. The 15-year anniversary arrives on Sunday and the numbers have not improved in the eight years since I first wrote about West Ham’s striking failure, detailing how the 32 forwards bought during Sullivan and Gold’s ownership at that point had mustered 128 goals in 643 appearances. Of course, as Arsenal are finding, landing the right goalscorer is a difficult and costly business. Why, though, do West Ham keep misfiring? The number of strikers signed is up to 40, with a return of 192 goals in 970 appearances. Niclas Füllkrug, the latest in a long line of underwhelming buys, has just been ruled out for three months with a hamstring injury sustained during last Friday’s defeat away to Aston Villa in the FA Cup. For Graham Potter, whose only fit striker for Tuesday evening’s home game against Fulham is Danny Ings (a panic buy at £12m in January 2023, five goals in 64 appearances since then), getting to grips with the foot-shooting nature of the West Ham way is one of his most pressing priorities. |
