Offside trap not played by 3 players? LOL So Mustafi was playing it on his own then? Quality defending.

You have to question the wisdom of playing offside with modern day offside rules in the first place, especially with non-regulars in the XI, but Mustafi should let the officials decide offside and follow Benteke anyway. He is absolutely at fault for the third as well. You push out when the ball is cleared.

The guy is a prize mug and we need to get his wages off the bill ASAP.

Funniest moment yesterday was Mustafi’s dive. Embarrassing.

We’ve had some pretty poor defenders over the years but this guy really takes the biscuit and always seems to start. Be interesting to see how we play Wolves. Tactical genius Emery needs to show he’s learnt something from playing them earlier this season.

We play a VERY HIGHLINE against free kicks inside our half. This has been the case for some time. Mustafi has Benteke in a clear offside position but only Jenkinson loses discipline.
https://www.arsenal.com/news/watch-key-moments-crystal-palace-game  00:14 shows this with absolute clarity.

3rd goal- Torriera is on Dann ffs- Koscielny is marking thin air and Kolasninac, Guendouzi and Auba are the ones daydreaming and playing 2 or 3 CP onside. Lacca was near post and as soon as the corner was heading away from goal he was on his way out as was Mustafi. Now you can say Mustafi shoulda, coulda, woulda but to lay the goal on him is a stretch.

The 2nd goal needs no explaining as for fault.

Mustafi was marking McArthur and let him get goal side, lost him and then ran out. You don't push out until the ball is cleared. Just because Lac ran out doesn't mean the rest of them should have. He is not a defender. If he'd stayed with McArthur he wouldn't have scored.

You can play a high line all you want but you still get goal side of the runners unless you are pushing out to play the offside trap, which we weren't as 3 other defenders ran towards goal. If he is offside the linesman should flag, if not you are in position to challenge the attacker instead of giving him a free header inside the 6 yard box. Playing a high line is not the same as playing the offside trap, you should still get goal side of your man or level with him at the very least in case he is not offside. Jenkinson f'd up, yes, but Mustafi was asleep when the ball was played and let Benteke go, then stuck his hand up when he knew he wasn't getting anywhere near him. It was poor defending by him. You don't just rely on offside when playing a high line and not follow your man, you rely on offside when playing the offside trap, which we don't. If he'd done his job properly Benteke wouldn't have had a free header 5 yards out despite Jenkinson's mistake.

here's the video of us playing the high line when he gave away the penalty against Spurs. Watch how all the Arsenal defenders, Mustafi included, drop a yard just before the ball is played to get back goal side of their men by the time the ball gets into the box. That's how he is supposed to play the high line.

Against Palace Mustafi switched off and let Benteke get 2 yards away from him before he moved. He knew he was miles out of position and stuck his hand up claiming offside. He was looking to blame someone else for the other 2 goals as well.

He didn't 'let hiom goal side, lost him and then ran out'. That is patently clear from the link. Mustafi was goalside- the ball was coming over and he THEN ran out (yes leaving Mac' now free).
The pointing out of what Lacca did was to illustrate the likelyhood that, that is what they are supposed to do, which would be consistent with Emery's highline approach to catching teams offside.
You yourself made the point that players not regularly in the side might be less disciplined in the finer details and what we saw was Jenkinson and Guendouzi both playing CP players onside. If and buts are all well and fine but IF Mustafi is following training drills by doing this he can hardly be castigated for doing so.
'3 others ran toward the goal'- I'm afraid this is categorically wrong again. They didn't. They instead ball watched and cost us a goal.
I could just as easily point to them as the main culprits in that goal as you do Mustafi ie if they had ran out as Mustafi and Lacca did........it wouldn't have stood.
Your points on the Benteke goal do not stand scrutiny but I have already shown why that is the case and see no point in rehashing it.

Your own link disproves what you say. They did not 'drop a yard' at all. In fact if you recall it was an 'offside goal' !

To sum up (because I see no more point in going over it) - both goals (CP) would have been offside if the other players had been more aware/disciplined and not ball watching in their defending.

Mustafi has huge errors in him which was horribly shown v CP's 2nd goal- that does not mean he is to blame for every goal because he could be argued to have been somewhere in the vicinity; it's lazy and far, far too easy a route to take and too many take it.

And so I am clear- Mustafi is simply not good enough right now to be at a big club.

The Spurs game video stops as the ball is played to show who was in an offside position. The Arsenal players have all dropped back and are running towards their own goal when it is paused. 5 of them do this you can actually see them in running motion when it pauses. If you missed it watch it again. This happens just before the ball is played, which is what we do when we defend a free-kick with a high line. It is vital that you are close to your man by the time the ball arrives in order to win the header or at least challenge for the ball. You drop off to stay close to your man and if a striker goes early he will be offside as Kane would have been if he had gone for the ball. But you always follow your man, you never let him run in unmarked for a free header. Mustafi switched off for a second and lost Benteke.

Kane was in an offside position but technically wasn't offside under the rules because he did not become active at any stage. He was about to go for the header and would have been offside then but Mustafi fouled him before he became active and therefore he was not offside at any stage.

And no team in the world pushes out to play offside at a corner when the corner ball is on its way into the centre of the goalmouth 8 yards out, not even schoolboys. You wait for the the ball to be cleared so you have enough time to get out and then you push out. You stay tight to your man and defend the corner ball until it is cleared, as Elneny and Guendouzi did.

Mustafi was goal side of McArthur and then let McArthur run inside him to the centre of the 6 yard box before running out. Again he switched off and lost his man.

The scramble for the fourth qualifying spot is becoming increasingly painful. Still cannot believe we’ll make it, though both Chelsea and United have tricky enough fixtures. Brighton at home would have been considered a gimme a month ago, but they are now well and truly in it and could need a point or two.

I’m interested to see how we approach Wolves tomorrow. If we’re too hung ho, they could easily pick us off. We should apply what we have learnt from the home game against them.

Fourth would represent progress, but we’re incredibly ill-equipped to face Europe’s elite clubs at present.

BL MN SOK KOS NM SK GX LT AI MO PEA - something like this for me today. No world beating team but it's as good as we have for the moment.
Lacca has been poor, with his little flicks rarely coming off and taking little to no responsibility for the ball when it comes his way.

I think he is going to play his strongest side today whatever that is!

Fact is if he had done that before he might have had the space to concentrate on the Thursday League matches.

Play the strongest side every game. Take the casualties. It's not the taking part it is the winning that counts FFS!

Not sure why Monreal is not present but that leaves us with SK as a LB which hasn't proved to be his game.
This is either a 442 or 4231.
Given this side and the form of some of them I would prefer Mikhi to play Ozil's role as he has lost his way of late on the right. So put Auba on the left and play it as a 451. Don't think it will be that way and I don't like the the look of the side but Emery has earned some trust.

16 minutes in and the co-commentator says what ought to be done; Auba should be on the left and Mhiki should be in behind Lacca !!!!!! Emery, I'm afraid watched on and on in that first half while our system was exposed again and again and done nothing at all about it. We could have been out of the game already.
The red card is probably a bad one for them as it has forced Emery to play a shape more like the one he should have started with given the team HE picked.

I remain suspended is disbelief but am thinking of embarking on a double or quits modus to win some money on Arsenal. At the moment I can't see them winning anything and I'd even be scared backing them playing an under 11's side!

The wheels have truly fallen off. The players may not be great but in all honesty they are decent enough players who have produced some good results this season.

I just do not understand what Dick Emery is trying to do!

Massive last minute goal. I thought we may have enough with a win of any sort but a 2 goal lead is a huge bonus particularly given we were 1 down. I know many will say we could lose heavily at any point but a 2 goal 1st leg lead in a semi final is all we could ask for.
