don't watch any scottish football and just by the results it appears celtic aren't as good as last year but they still absolutely schooled rangers in the cup semi, didn't they ?

Yep yet we ran them ragged twice this season albeit a lack of finishing saw us with a crumb for our efforts.
You only need to look to Celtics results in Europe to see how poor they and the rest of Scottish football are. |

Mind you not unexpected given that the team that finishes last in the EPL gets more tv dosh than the whole of Scottish football combined and that's before any parachute payments.

It was a grave yard for managerial hopeful John Barnes many years ago with King Kenny advising. Barnes never went near management since. Don't do it Stevie G.......  ...... Shirley there is something better awaiting you. |

sure it's about 5 levels above the scottish prem but when you watch celtic in europe i'm always amazed at how poorly they defend. often concede from simple set pieces, don't pick up their men. obviously they have very little defending to do at home and none at all against top class players

Money has ruined the game. The days when Celtic and Rangers were competitive in Europe are long gone. The demise of Rangers has seriously effected the overall standards of the game. Scottish football at club and international level need a strong Rangers to make us competitive ....... mind you, not too strong

On reflection I agree with that Vicky.
We need someone like SG though, ie a strong character with a top notch pedigree. |

It sounds like something that might happen but if asked, I would advise against, very high risk.
Is there money there to bring in quality players ? Gerrards name alone might attract some bigish name players in the twilight of their careers to Rangers but again all very risky and if it all goes horribly wrong it is very hard to recover from that, just like Barnes, Brady, Butcher etc. Marquee name managers that failed miserably |

It's a good opportunity for him it's a situation where he can't really lose
Everyone knows how far they are off Celtic so he's not expected to win the league by anyone other than the fanatical few So he can learn his trade in a competitive league compared to the youth level he's working in now He will get work with budgets deal with players try his hand at finding nee players He has friends who have done well in that league and ones who haven't So he has experience to call on if needed if he can close the gap. Then it will be acceptable if he can't then people will just see it as s thankless task and he won't be damaged He will learn far mote about the job and himself with a chance of success I'm sure he could attract some experienced players and also tsp into the youth and fringe players from his current club He was always going to have to start somewhere this could be ideal option Also rangers would or should get a boost |

Brady and Barnes both managed after Celtic. Brady had a spell at Brighton and Barnes lasted even shorter at Tranmere than he did at Celtic.

Isn't he coaching Liverpool's youths right now? Going to Rangers obviously a massive step down in player quality. That being said, it would be a similar step down if he was currently in charge of The Fox and The Hound

McCoist says his former club could appoint the likes of Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola and they’d still struggle to win the Scottish Premiership without financial backing.

Steven Gerrard is a practising Catholic is he not? Has admitted he is a Celtic supporter in the past I read? Will the knuckle dragging weegie sevconians be happy with him being installed as their Leader? Rangers are damaged goods, The Daily Record report Steve Clark has turned them down, McInnes said naw, they treated him with dirt afterwards and they are treating Murty with the same contempt currently, why would someone of Gerrard's stature and reputation want anything to do with this downmarket tawdry club? Are they going to go deep in debt again to try and keep up with Celtic and obtain regular European football? They are not that team anymore, they have to be realistic, they are just another SPL club, accept it, live within your means and get back in your boxes.

Rangers are increasingly confident of appointing Steven Gerrard as their manager. The decision of whether Gerrard will take over at Ibrox is now believed to be the Liverpool icon’s to make, with Rangers hopeful of receiving that answer over the weekend. Gerrard, who initially met Rangers at the end of last week, has been involved in further and detailed discussions as he ponders a first step into frontline management.
The 37-year-old, currently a youth coach at Liverpool, is understood to have proposed Gary McAllister as his Rangers assistant and is aware of what funds he will have at his disposal over the summer. Rangers are seeking a permanent successor to Pedro Caixinha, who was sacked in October. Graeme Murty has been in charge of first-team affairs on an interim basis at Ibrox but is not regarded as a serious candidate to carry out the job in the longer term. Derek McInnes appeared close to moving to Rangers from Aberdeen, only to stay with his existing employers. Kilmarnock’s Steve Clarke was considered by Rangers but has privately insisted he has no current intention of leaving Rugby Park. Neil Warnock, who has a house in Scotland and has made regular overtures regarding managing in the country, was also in Rangers’ radar but the clear frontrunner is now Gerrard. |

Who would take over this current club?? Gerrard is NO go for me. No way will he line up against his former boss and mentor. SG is very close to Rodgers. He won't have the resources to challenge Celtic. This is my personal opinion

Brendan Rodgers, the Celtic manager, has urged Steven Gerrard to be extremely careful about his first step into management as his former captain contemplates whether to take over at Rangers.
Rodgers offered no view on whether or not Gerrard should join him in Glasgow but pointed out that a “high percentage” of new managers never get a second chance if their first move goes wrong. Gerrard, who coaches Liverpool’s under-18 side, has been contacted by Rangers and will be their next manager if he decides to come north. |
