I've been putting a bit a side, to put on some long shot in the tournament, any suggestions? Can be anything.

The plan was Austria @ 41, but I'm sort of leaning towards Northern Ireland @ 150 now. Nobody will thrash them, they have the deadly Lafferty,, and Poland and Ukraine are both very beatable. Germany the last game, so a decent chance the hard work may have been done by then.

Any thoughts on Northern Ireland, or any other fun suggestions for bets?

Disclaimer: for half-wits like Mega88 chiming in about a £56.89 bet instead of the millions they wager, this is for fun, with money made purely with the aim of throwing it down the toilet.

Don't know that much about the current Croatia team, but is it fair to say that they are a better balanced, more cohesive side than some Croatia sides of the past? How would you guys rate them in comparison with, say the '98 WC team, which had a few world-class players, but maybe not the same strength right through the team?
Report jamesdean June 5, 2016 5:10 PM BST
Just looking at the odds for Portugal at 20/1. They are 50/1 to win and Ronaldo to be top goal scorer.
You would think for them to win it he's going to have to bang a few in. With him being on the penalties and their top scorer anyway
that might be worth a nibble.

They have Austria, Hungary and Iceland in their group. He should torment Hungary and Iceland possibly Austria.
Then in the knock out stages he will again have to be the man.

Portugal/Ronaldo TGS 50/1

Hard to compare for me , was a lot of quality in that team and would probably beat this team back then but in 18 years fitness has improved all round so that team in 98 v this team in 2016 would probably be fecked after HT.That team from 98 just missed on euro 2000 by a point in qualifiers , they all played for decent teams also.

10/1

It's not 10 x 20/1 (portugal odds x ronaldo odds) though as the bet would be linked unfortunately.

Another way to look at it is. What odds is Ronaldo to be Portugals top scorer, he's 1/2

So 20/1 for say tenner gives you £210 then on a 1/2 £315 i.e 30/1

But that’s not to say there isn’t some value knocking around further down the order and the 100/1 on Ukraine to win the competition looks like a decent each-way punt for an outside interest. A combination of factors could leave the door ajar for Mykhaylo Fomenko’s men to make good progress quietly, presenting them with a relatively easy passage to the quarter-finals.

By my reckoning, Ukraine are superior to Group C rivals Poland, an assertion that both Elo ratings and UEFA coefficients agree with, so the market making Poland favourites to finish second behind Germany is the first bone of contention. Secondly, the idea that Switzerland finish as runners-up to France in Group A is far from a formality, so a last-16 clash with either Romania or Albania is quite feasible, but I’d make Ukraine jollies to progress in any case.

Beyond that, we’re asking for something extraordinary but it’s only two more hurdles that need to be cleared for a bumper payout. And as the wheel turns back from the high-tempo pressing game of the Guardiola era towards more counter-attacking ideologies, it suits that Ukraine are threatening to be ultra-defensive with inverted wingers Yehven Konoplyanka and Andriy Yarmolenko capable of causing enough damage on the break.

Spain would be the likeliest opponents for Ukraine in the quarters, at which point you’d hope the extended winter break of the Ukrainian Premier League - from which all but one of the likely starting 11 are drawn - might give them a chance. Then a semi-final against a contender from either Group B, E or F would represent a fairly modest barrier to the place money.

Finally, there’s also a political motive to consider. Sport has a fabulous way of enabling countries to restore immense pride in their national identity following periods of conflict or crisis, a cause that transcends the normal pressures of a competition like this. We shouldn’t rule out the possibility that Ukraine will be psyched-up in a way that clears the mental obstacles that have maybe prevented them from fulfilling their potential at previous tournaments.

Was going to throw this on Northern Ireland @ 500, as I think they can at least get through the group, but seeing Kyle Lafferty hobble off today makes it a no bet. He may not be injured, but there's no way he'll be properly fit

Not really that complicated, but I'll summarise, this one time.

Point of thread was to throw £56.89 on a long shot, which is going to be Northern Ireland. Out of boredom, I put that money on Romania AH yesterday, and Albania AH today, which both won.

The profit made from those two games (£20.02 Romania, £5.95 Albania) is a seperate bank of £25.97 from the £56.89 that is going on Northern Ireland. But I've added £6.89 of that Northern Ireland money to this new bank, so £25.97 + £6.89 is £32.86. And £50 is going on Northern Ireland
