I think it's also popular because it is so easy to play. Difficult to master yes but 1000x easier than golf, baseball etc. Etc.

When you have Delph and Henderson in midfield you know you will prob. lose midfield battle against any half decent side. Then you add Jones. Why not just put 8 men on the goal-line and be done with it?
