All the decades before that since the 1920s. That's five decades. And as I said above, it's only because Spurs have been so rancid on the pitch and badly managed off it that the game's cachet has declined. I'll happily admit that it's only of parochial interest now - I think even for Arsenal fans it doesn't matter as much as their games with Man Utd because of the rivalry that has built up over the last couple of decades.

Blackpool, lol ![]() |

Guess historically clubs like Blackpool and Burnley would have rights to being Giants in the game.
By:
Of course they would stu. At one point in the 1950s Blackpool would have had five regular England Internationals playing for them, and they reached three FA Cup finals in five years when that competition was the biggest in World football. Never won the League though.
Burnley similar - twice League champions - as many as Spurs - and reached the QF of the European Cup in the year Spurs won the double. Giants may be a bit strong, but at one time they were both very big clubs. |
By:
Yep, of course being a Giant in the game is always relative to the era - but that's why Chelsea and Man City need a fair few extra years at the top to be considered that. May happen of course.

City have held the club record attendance in England since the wheel was invented, you must be talking about TV viewers
By:
Why would a game involving a club who hadn't won a title until 1950 be the biggest game in the country for 30 years before then? And unless you're heading towards being a hundred how would you know?
Tottenham won their first title only 5 years before we did and they had over 20 years head start on us as well. Between our formation in 1905 and the first trophy of any kind in 1955 we were the highest supported team in the land for 10 of those years I believe. Being the first team to win the double gave Tottenham a certain aura that usurped a lot of the prior history and what came after. |

A battle for 4th is a big game. United, Liverpool is clearly a big game. Two good teams in good form, what's the problem? Should be a cracker.

City have held the club record attendance in England since the wheel was invented, you must be talking about TV viewers According to wikipedia, record attendance is Man City? 1Manchester City 84,569 Maine Road Stoke City FA Cup sixth round 3 March 1934 Surprised to find that. |
By:
Man U 2nd and Chelsea third apparently.
By:
i'm lumping on Man Utd here, Liverpool are full of gutless mugs and I have no problem taking the odds about Man U to get it done
By:
United's was at Maine Road

Blackpool & Burnley have a combined history of over 250 years & have won 3 league titles & 2 FA Cups between them.
Great comparison. |
By:
Marcce, I'm guessing you're a youngish fellow? Why don't you ask someone old how big a game it was, instead of looking at it from your jaundiced Chelsea perspective and through the skewed prism of modern football's interpretation of what is a big club?
Chelsea will never ever be a big club. Tottenham Hotspur will never ever not be. And that, my friend, is that. |

Unsure why Liverpool are continuing to drift ?
United are kack. |

When Spurs won the double in 1961, that was the first time anyone had done it in the 20th century.
very important stat. the recently deceased Dave Mackay played his part in that. |
By:
fozwald he also has erection problems.
By:
He played a huge part in it, as he did when Spurs became the first English club to win a European trophy a couple of seasons later having reached the semi-final of the European Cup the season in between. These historic and unprecedented achievements are part of what make Spurs a bigger club than Chelsea could ever dream of being, but then you wouldn't expect a child of Rupert Murdoch's era to understand that.
By:
I don't think Mackay played in the 1963 ECWC final iirc. Injured. I might be wrong though.

Chelsea v City much bigger nowadays
_____________________ this was a standard Championship fixture back in the day - but in terms of winning the title ,yes -it's bigger than .more at stake |

Liverpool/Unders for me.
By:
2.38 about Liverpool seems silly seeing as they should be odds on.
By:
I think this game will be pretty open from the start.
By:
Why is unders so favored?
By:
0-0 for me.
Hoofball utd |
By:
I've layed United. Think this will be Unders, although I haven't bet on it, and it could easily be 0-0.
By:
No chance it finishes 0-0
By:
If there is 2 goals before half time then i'd be confident it will finish with 3 or more goals. More difficult to predict with just the one goal before half time though
