I'd personally start Barkley and Sterling against Italy but Hodgson will obviously go for experience and a safety first approach and then probably look to introduce Barkley and Sterling as impact subs in the last half hour

I'm always baffled why everyone gets hung up over the starting line up for the first game of a World Cup. Teams always evolve during tournaments and Barkley, Sterling and maybe the Ox will play a role whether or not they start v Italy. I'm not Welbeck or Milners biggest fan but I could understand why Roy might start them in the first game.
As for Johnson, despite his faults I don't see a better option. |
