Having loudly assured the world that there was no such thing as a £40 million escape clause in his contract and who can forget those heartfelt words of apparent honesty from the manager? Now they blithely say that there was indeed the clause and essentially they told Suarez to suck on it. It'll be interesting to see how he reacts the next time the wheels fall off the rancid Anfield cart.

Never mind Boo Hoo. Shankley and Paisely will be turning in their graves at how this outfit now do business. Liverpool once stood for something better. At least we now know this is dead ans buried and we also know that they entice players with the carrot of saying they can go to a bigger club at a certain price and then renege on the deal. They allowed Suarez to take all that flak for his supposed disloyalty and yet they lied through their teeth. Total bounders.

He wont be happy he stayed based on a CL place in the long run.

A player like Suarez should be at a team challenging for the league and CL every season.

He is wasted at Liverpool.

Does your word mean nothing? Does a code of honour mean nothing? Do contractual terms mean nothing? To Liverpool the answer is cleary no. For some people there are things called principles. Not for Liverpool. They are a complete and utter deceitful shower.

I don't get what happened in the summer.

So Suarez's contract has a £40m release clause. Arsenal bid £40m +1. Suarez wants to leave. What stopped him forcing an exit? Did his team not read his own contract? They must have known. I dont understand. If Liverpool receive a release clause-sized bid but can reject it, then what the **** does a release clause actually do?!

What does a contract stand for when players force a move mid term?
Congratulations to FSG for having the balls to turn the tables.

I thought the £40m figure in the contract was the point at which they needed to listen to bids from other teams not the point at which they had to sell him.  Probably not what Pep's brother thought and almost certainly 'lost in translation' somewhere down the line.

This is what John Henry said on the matter:

"He had a buyout clause of £40m. Arsenal, one of our prime rivals – this year we’re tied for 2nd … we’re actually 2nd because of GD"

A. "They offered £40m+£1. What we’ve found ... is that contracts don’t seem to mean a lot in England – actually, in world football."

A. "We sold a player, Fernando Torres, for £50m, that we did not want to sell, we were forced to."

A. "Since apparently these contracts don’t seem to hold, we took the position that we’re just not selling."

These things cut both ways. I reckon if Wenger hadn't have tried to take the pith with the extra pound, it's possible he might have got Suarez with a £50 million bid, & Arsenal would probably have had the league sewn up by now.

Wenger is a good manager, but he's no businessman that's for sure......Thank god.

I said it at the time and i'll say it again, if Suarez really wanted to leave he would've gone on strike and forced through a move. The fact that only Arsenal were in for him probably helped him make his mind up to stay. If the likes of Barca or Real had been in for him, we'd have seen a different outcome and he'd have gone.

Fair play to Liverpool though, stood their ground and have been thoroughly rewarded. Suarez hasn't exactly looked unhappy this seaosn has he?

agree with biscuit here, and would add that whoever thought it would be a good idea to offer the penny above the release fee must be off their rocker, surely they must have realised that all they would achieve would be to put liverpools backs up, and make them adopt a stance where they would never sell to arsenal.

or was that arsenals strategy all along?

the one thing i will say re the club, is that any latent sense of injustice suarez might be harbouring wont be helped by liverpool coming out and basically stating that they mugged the player off.

A buy out clause means nothing. All it does is allow clubs to put something in that basically says a player cannot talk to another club until the clause is activated.  What Arsenal bid is irrelevant once they offer 40 million as it only entitles them to discussions. It is not (contrary to what people seem to think on here) a "buy out" offer.  The club and player still need to agree to sell and Liverpool dug their heels in believing 40 million to be too little.

Had Arsenal stuck 50 mill on the table like the Torres bid then maybe that would have been enough but 40 million plus £1 was seen as a p/ss take.

I think John Henry has now realised that contracts in soccer mean nothing unlike the U.S systems. If Suarez really wanted to force a move through then he would have done in the same way he had at Ajax

The thing is, Arsenal couldn't have taken Liverpool to court as that would have shown them to have knowledge of a confidential document. Wenger really let himself down with that one pound stunt.

an entirely justified decision in being stubborn regarding the sale of the top scorer in the top 5 leagues.

arsenal fans seething as their season is petering out to nothing, in danger of spuds overtaking them.

man utd fans seething as they're glory hunters and have lost their glory.

chelsea fans having a little bite, to be expected and fair enough.

man city fans as usual, classy and staying out of it (though this will change when the manure glory hunters switch).

Interesting, thanks wallis. I thought buy out clauses actively forced clubs to sell if the player wished to go, rather than actually being defence against bids below the line.

It does rankle that Arsene bid but didnt put in an offer for what the player was clearly worth. Oh, what could have been..

Liverpool fans suddenly loving it after moaning Rodgers for 18 months. Some of them would have preferred Dalgleish to stay, seriously. Just look at the discussion thread. Most of them are ****g clueless and know nothing about football. They refuse to appreciate that BR has basically turned them around into a proper force, because that would mean admitting they had been wrong all along. Some of them think its just a massive coincidence that nearly all their players are playing well at the same time...the same way some United fans are just blaming the players Cry

And that is the key point here. Suarez obviously didn't wish to go that badly or he would've forced through a move.

I guess so. The club worked hard on him to stay.

Wenger has only once, as far as I can remember, layed down a serious bid at the correct price the first time of offering, to make sure he got his man. Mesut Ozil. His precious attacking mid. Dont get me wrong I am still a huge Ozil fan as much as things havent quite worked out as they should this year (partly Wenger to blame for playing him too much). But I wish he had taken getting a striker more seriously than an attacking mid.

Some of them would have preferred Dalgleish to stay, seriously. Just look at the discussion thread. yes look at the discussion thread of every club there are always some that are not happy, some being the operative word here.

Most of them are ****g clueless and know nothing about football. great generalization you sound very level headed i must say in your rants.

I suppose if Liverpool actually do get nearer and nearer to winning the league we can expect many more exceptionally bitter threads like this. Fantastic - keep it up as it is all wasted as they won't win it but watching liverpool haters seethe and self-combust in these threads should provide some entertainment for the next few months!

There was a very good article on the espn site back in september explaining the legal ramifications of a buy out clause SFTD.  It was written on the back of Uniteds botched attempt to buy a spanish player.  Woodward made a mess of it and didnt understand how the buy out clause worked so they didnt get the player.  I will have to try and find it because it explained how the clause in england means nothing other than it opens up dialogue.  But as Biscuit rightly says, for Arsenal to know that the clause was 40 million means that someone leaked the confidential details of the contract. That could easily have been Suarez or his agent trying to engineer a move though.

I think in Spain the player has to pay it ? So Suarez in spain could pay 40 million , get himself out of the Liverpool contract and then get Arsenal to pay him all that money back again. But there are some tax implications in doing that in Spain and that caused the problem Woodward had.
