Sir Alex Ferguson:

"I would have like to have signed Gascoigne, I’d have loved to have got Gascoigne. He played against us up at Newcastle, he’d be out of the team for weeks, and they were down the bottom.

"We went there Easter Monday, and he was starting to get recognised. We’d known that because we’d scouted him and thought 'Gascoigne’s the man', and we couldn’t get near him, honestly it was unbelievable.

"I wish I’d have got him, I maybe could have done something with him. If you look at English football since say 1966 when they won the World Cup, you’d have to say Gascoigne’s been the one real world star that England have produced.

I don't think he's the only real world star England have produced.

Gary Lineker?
Michael Owen?
Chris Waddle?

That's true but he did get things right quite a bit more often

Would've been interesting to see how Gazza's career (and life) went if he'd gone to United instead of London

Best English player of all time is Bobby Charlton in almost any aspect you want to judge it by.

How many players would you pay to go and watch? I'm a Chelsea fan, always have been, and I paid to go and watch Zola most weeks, the man was an absolute genius. Only ever saw Gazza play live once and he was infectious, the crowd buzzed with expectation every time he got the ball and he was something very special on that day. There are not many players these days I would pay to watch!

This is true. I saw him play for Spurs at Selhurst park in the 90-91 season, the crowd must've been about 10k up on what it usually was and he (along with Lineker) was absolutely outstanding. Like you say, there was a buzz every time he got the ball.

I saw him V Chelsea at White Hart lane Biscuit around that time. Chelsea won 3-2 but Gazza scored, along with Lineker I think, and it was one of the games I will always remember.

Maybe if Fergie had been his manager he might've kept him more on the rails, been a longer/better career?

was magnificent in the season following the 1990 world cup. more or less dragged an average spurs side to the fa cup in 1991 singlehandedly

in the semi final ran rings around the arsenal side who lost 1 game all season in the league and that after 6 weeks out injured

a real shame he committed career suicide in the final. has never really ever recovered from that day

Gazza wasn't overrated, for two years he was the best player in England in an ordinary side. But the injury in the Cup Final finished him and he was never the same player again.

Gazza's life epitaph will read " Could have been ..."

When Jack Wilshere has actually achieved something then there might be a debate but right now he's not really done anything in the game. Gazza was superb and starred at a world cup and a European championships.

His goals v Arsenal in the FA cup and v Scotland at Euro 96 are 2 of the best goals in Wembley history. I can't even remember a Wilshere goal.

think biscuit has it just about nailed,we,ll have some young whipper snapper coming along shortly telling us one direction are different class to the beatles,as friendlys dont count wiltshires whole career is based on 1 half against an out of sorts milan ,who when they got sorted at half time wiltshire never got a kick in the 2nd half,
ive never seen him touch the ball at stamford bridge, old trafford, eittihad, anfield etc
