"vastly overrated." Interestingly these two sentences are not logically contradictory :) |

forget spurs, england, lazio, i,m a boro fan and when the local news used to show newcastle highlights on a monday night it was like watching a one man masterclass, the man was brilliant, to compare him with wiltshire is a joke a compilation of wiltshires career highlights would consist of a decent 1st half against a woeful milan team and a good game in a friendly against brazil
i watch him closely to see what i,m missing but the evidence to match the hype in wiltshires case is very thin on the ground |

By:
yeah i agree im arsenal fan and hopefully he will become a top top payer but doubt will be anywhere near a gazza

Have to agree with the massively overrated opinion.
Funny how players get better with the passing of time. |

'second best england midfielder behind scholes'
David Platt was better for England than Scholes ever was, Scholes was dropped for Lampard and Gerrard and sulked, then took his bat and ball home. If you think Scholes was England's best ever midfielder then he's also got to be England's biggest traitor in retiring early |
|
By:
Honours of one of Englands all time greats.
1 x FA Cup. 1 x Young player of the year. And some Scottish stuff. |
|
By:
Scholes was a great player but it seems that as he was under rated for large parts of his career that people now over rate him to make a point.
Very good player but not close to the top midfieders in europe and many midfielders did more for England than him. |
|
By:
There would be some shocking contenders for best England midfielder if honours are the only contributing factor.

If you saw him play for Newcastle you knew within seconds he was something special |
|
By:
Agree,honours aren't the only factor.
But they are one of the main ones in judging a player. |
|
By:
He played for some pretty average club sides so was never going to clean up in medals.
I personally don't think he was overrated. He had everything. Skillful, strong, scored goals, great passer, and lit up a World Cup. |

Whats funny? I'm a fan of Gazza.
Even Jason Cundy on talksport agreed Wilshere has the potential to be better than Gazza. Wilshere is technically better than Gazza, and also has more ability to glide past players. I've watched a lot of gazza and a lot of his stuff was one two footy and didn't go on and beat 2 or 3 players as much as Wilshere. Gazza was stronger and scored far more goals than Wilshere, Gazza was class, no doubt. But Wilshere is something very special in the making and will go down at the end of his career as a true great. All IMO, of course. |
|
By:
I'm not doubting he had a lot of ability.
Just saying anyone who puts him down as one of the all time English greats has been pulled along by the hype. When you have a player with the profile of Gazza. You see everything good he does over and over again. Even though he was loved by jurnos and players a like, he was never voted the best in the league by either. |
|

From what I've seen so far, the emboldened words best describe him when he plays. Spends half the time on the deck complaining. |

Agree, honours aren't the only factor. But they are one of the main ones in judging a player. Most people will judge a player with how they perform on the pitch, not by what they won. Are you going to tell me Glenn Hoddle wasn't a great player because he won hardly anything? Or maybe John O' Shea was a great player because he won 5 league titles? Or perhaps Djimi traore was a top full back because he won a champions league medal. |

As I said it's not the only factor.
As always a lot of ability comes down to opinion. My opinion is Gazza is no where near one of Englands all time greats. I just try to use facts to support my case. |

5 years since wilshere's debut, still somehow full of promise for the future.
meanwhile aaron ramsey is playing better than wilshere is or ever has. bewildering. |
