The moment that Crystal Palace got promoted the two games that I had them down as winning were Spurs and Liverpool at home. Last season ended on very different note for these sides. Palace won promotion at Wembley whilst Spurs missed out on the Champions League after only winning five of their last ten games, blowing the lead they had over Arsenal.

Crystal Palace were favourites to be relegated from the Championship last season which proved to be wrong and again they have been written off as having no chance. Towards the end of last season they looked as though they learnt how to defend under pressure and being a Holloway team they’ll always pose a threat going forward.

The statistics for these two teams pose some interesting questions, especially regarding the team news;

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace have only lost 13 of their last 69 home league games
Crystal Palace have kept 4 clean sheets in the last 5 games
Gareth Bale & Spurs 2012/13

Directly affected over 30% of the games he played in
He scored almost 32% of Spurs goals last season
When his 9 assists are added to his 21 goals he was involved in over 45% of Spurs goals
Spurs won 4 of their 10 games without Bale last season (all comps.)
Spurs away at odds on

Of the last 14 games they’ve played away from home at odd-on they’ve won 6, drawn 4 and lost 4
Last time they played away from home without Gareth Bale at odds on (1.80) they lost 3-1 at Blackpool
A lot is being made about the loss of Glenn Murray and Wilfred Zaha for Crystal Palace. Glenn Murray is a obviously a big loss, he was responsible for 41% of gaols, but with Chamakh and Dwight Gayle I feel they have signed two players who will score and create this season. The Zaha move is being overblown in my opinion, he’s a very good player and he has the potential to be one of the worlds best. However this belief that he scored or created basically every Palace goal is wrong. He scored six goals and provided ten assists in his 43 league games last season. That equates to 23% of goals scored, which when compared to the 45% that Bale contributed it’s easy to see who the bigger loss is. Well statistically anyway.

For anyone who enjoys historical stats here are a few that support the ‘Palace can get a result’ argument;

Palace have scored more Premier League goals (10) against Spurs than they have against any other side
Palace have only lost 1 of the last 6 against Spurs
Spurs have only won 2 of their last 12 opening games
Spurs should be favourites and comfortable ones at that, however with Palace’s home form tied in with the whole Gareth Bale and Spurs situation I would price Spurs at 1.90. That price is giving Spurs a 52.5% chance of winning this, however the current odds give them a 56% chance.

LAY SPURS 1.79

its all well and good saying spurs without bale blah blah blah but what about palace without murray? you would not be in prem without him and he was your main goal threat last season along with zaha who.... also isnt playing for you today.

spurs have the quality to beat palace without bale and a couple more imo because palace are so poor. you can talk all you like about how few games you lose at home but look at who youve actually beaten. ipswich and charlton are not spurs class teams. so while you may think you are solid at home, when it comes to playing 16 of the other 19 prem teams you will probably start second favourites at home.

as far as your defence goes.... L..O..L i think you will be lucky to concede less than 2 goals today. and your "big" signing is a player whose played just a few football league games as i have.

spurs
spurs -1
spurs -2
spurs clean sheet

this is all.

Palace have scored more Premier League goals (10) against Spurs than they have against any other side

what were spurs a few years back compared to now ?

the answer is a totally different team at a much higher level

stats like that mean very little imo

Crystal Palace 2013/14

Almost certainties to be Relegated
Almost Certainties to finish Bottom
Have a good chance of finishing this season with a Record Low Points Total

Why is this, well they have signed an Arsenal striker on loan for the season (err great unproven at this level)
They have signed a Goalkeeper from Rangers, (thats not going to stop the goals against column)
The current 40 players, include Kevin Phillips gone, Glen Murray injured and about 38 other players (mostly not good enough), who are just in for many many defeats, this season. My prediction, is a maxumum of 6 wins and probably around a maxumum of 10 draws.

Now todays game with Tottenham, well Palace will give it everything and today could be one of those surprise games that they don't lose, but their squad lacks the quality needed to stay up.

I think this game is like the Swansea vs United game yesterday evening in that everybody thought United would have a tough time going there when in hindsight it was a very comfortable win! same situation here!

Totally agree stridingedge - was more tongue and cheek comment out historical stats (like they've won it 5 times when trying to justify if Liverpool are good or not)

I don't think this will be easy for Spurs like everyone is expecting. With regards to Murray he scored 30 goals but they weren't generally of his own making. Chamakh and Gayle would both of been up near that number if playing for Palace last season

so 28 points then but you think they have a good chance of getting almost 60% less than that?

Palace have some pretty decent attacking talent in the team... problem is the defence is rubbish, especially the central defenders, they have no mobility and no pace whatsoever... aging journeyman championship players basically. The fullbacks are decent but untested at this level.

And which area of the team did Holloway strengthen over the summer? The attack and midfield obviously... Holloway doesnt believe in defenders. They signed some defender from Bordeaux, a reserve keeper from Rangers, and a whole new team worth of attacking and midfield players.

I can see Palace scoring a few this season... problem is I can see them conceding even more Laugh

I think it will be hard work for Spurs today, we have several new faces who might take a few games to hit their stride. But I'd fancy us to win, we were very good away from home last season too.

i think there's every chance of spurs having a tough time here, promoted teams at home in opening fixture can be a dangerous beast against anyone. quite often they can start the first few games in general with the buzz of excitement that then subsides when the reality of the level they have top play week in week out kicks in!

be an interesting watch

my point was only on the historical stats being often pointless, especially when eras and team strengths are miles apart.

No they will definatly get more than THE MASSIVE 11 points, acquired by Derby County in the 2007/8 season, but even you must fear this season, without Zaha and the quality of their squad, could be added to obviously. Now I like Ian Holloway, as a manager, but he should be voted Manager of the Year, if he can keep Crystal Palace up. You forget about lows, so they are unlikely to get less than 11 points, but they seem out of their depth with the current squad

a lot depends on whether Holloway will play kamikaze football like he did last time with Blackpool, they could surprise a few people... their midfield and attack really isnt as bad as people think

problem is, these Palace defenders make Holloways Blackpool teams defenders look like Baresi, Beckenbauer and Maldini

half the Palace squad defenders belong in non-league football or early retirement, not the Premier League

@cri**** my fears are more to do with the lack of a defence. I don't really think we'll miss Zaha or Murray. Jonny Williams is more than capable of stepping up to the plate.

If/when Palace go down then they go down, they should play without fear

As a fan I have nothing to fear, we almost didn't have a club a few years ago and are now in the Premier League having spent basically no money. We could be in the same position as Brighton, Leicester, Forest or Wolves.

The next two against Stoke and Sunderland are the important ones. I have us somewhere between 33 and 41 points

Well Brighton, Leicester and Forest are all in their correct Leagues and I don't think that any of them are going broke either, although all the clubs, seem to hit trouble at some time or another. Obviously Brighton having to travel to Kent to play home games, and then playing at an athletics stadium, fit for nothing bar athletics, didn't help. Forest and Leicester go on normally in their rightful Championship status and Wolves have had 2 relegations in a row and now playing at an extremely low level, for a club such as Wolves.
Now the bright spot for Crystal Palace, is that Ian Holloway will not spend for the sake of spending, therefore not putting the club in financial difficulty again. However he did get Blackpool relegated and that was with Charlie Adam in his side, but does try to play entertaining football and I am sure, he will try to entertain the Palace supporters this season.

ash - Palace will miss Zaha hugely, he was by far their best player last season, teams completely altered their tactics to try and contain him. In most games he had one opposition winger too busy helping cover him to do any attacking.

I agree about Murray though, he wont be missed - his goals tally was flattered by the excellent service he got from the Palace wingers. Any half-decent striker would have been banging them in with Zaha and Bolasie creating chance after chance.

I really dont know what to expect from Holloway, he keeps banging on about having learned from his Blackpool season. Will he play his usual kamikaze tactics, or will he try to keep it tight to protect that seriously weak defence?
