Celtic = top 6 Championship side
SPL 2-4 = mid table League 1 in England
SPL 5-8 = lower League 1 to good League 2 team
SPL 9-12 = poor League 2 to decent Conference side.

Don't judge scottish football by Hibs. They are absolute garbage and only Leigh Griffiths papered over the cracks last season.
Report marychain1 July 25, 2013 8:52 PM BST
They did well in the Champions League sure, beating a disinterested Barcelona side despite only having 8% possession, and beating a second rate Portugese and Latvian team or someone. Everyone in England was really happy for them. But when it came to the crunch they got absolutely pasted 5-0 by an average Juventus side.

And now they're selling their best players to Norwich, Just like a Championship side. The reality is they have to come in at the second qualifying round because they're absolute guff.
Report CJ70 July 25, 2013 8:53 PM BST
The best comparison is with Braga. Celtic played them in the CL 2010-2011 2-1 & 0-3 Birmingham in the Championship played them in EL 2011-2012 1-3 & 0-1. Means little I'd say.

The rest of the Scottish Prem is probably League One standard, so not much point in looking at those results.
Report marychain1 July 25, 2013 8:56 PM BST
Celtic and Birmingham is a decent comparison I'd say in terms of playing level, history, support etc. At times they may have both been able to compete to some degree with the top English clubs, but they will both be perpetual also-rans.

^ That was only last season, look at the last 10 seasons and you will see Celtic have done really well beating some of the best teams in europe so I dont think our game is as bad as some would suggest.

On the decline, same as English football. Without the foreign players the best of the English Clubs would be about the same as Rangers or Celtic. Not a lot to shout about is it?Sad
Report marychain1 July 25, 2013 9:09 PM BST
That's a different argument. Granted English players are absolute crap. There isn't a single player among them with a smidgen of on-field intelligence. We get to paper over the cracks by buying some half decent players and hyping it up with Sky.

It's hard to see what joy can be gained from the rest of Scottish football though. And this is coming from a Crewe fan, so I know my utter tripe.

Does it at least mean loads of kids are being given a chance in the first teams, or are Scottish clubs still buying loads of foreigners, just worse ones?

Scottish football is dire and we all know it as now we cant afford the decent foreigners or even half decent as they get snapped up by EPL teams on higher wages.Celtic are now a team who buy young players and hope to sell on at a profit ( we are led to believe its the way ahead ) but the profit is only going in greedy pockets.Dont get me wrong we have been quite lucky with some buys lately but also ulucky with players like Bangura , Juarez , Rasmussen who alone cost about 7 million.

Most Scottish teams have no money to spend, so the quality is going to be lacking when most of the promising youngsters head off to warm benches in England for quadruple the wages they'd get for staying and playing in Scotland.

Whatever happened to Chris Maguire?

most SPL teams are on the verge of bankruptcy with celtic the only team making any money, and that's only because they can win the league and qualify for the CL every season now that they have got rid of rangers.
Report Biscuit1979 July 26, 2013 9:33 AM BST
You only have to look through the SPL top scorers to see what sort of level it's at.

Michael Higdon - did nothing at Crewe
Leigh Griffiths - now at Wolves in league one
Billy McKay - 27 goals last season, but prior to that scored 16 in 84 games for league 2 Northampton
Niall McGinn - 21 goals last season, but the season before scored 5 in 37 for league one Brentford

Celtic applied themselves admirably in the first leg. Looked the better team imo, but got mugged off by Lichtsteiner and just couldn't put their many chances away. And no Championship team would've held the flood back, let alone beat them. Celtic probably are top 6 Championship standard overall, but at home in Europe, more like top 7 EPL.

Probably more to do with the weakness of Liverpool at the time. The round before Liverpool were completely outplayed by a Gomel side who were concentrating on the league.

Don't know enough about Higdon and McKay's early careers to comment on them.

Griffiths signed for Wolves when they were in the Prem, just been up here on loan. He'll do fine if Wolves actually gave him a game, especially in League 1 - as far as I know he's never played for them.

McGinn was known more as a winger than a striker before last season, playing him up front was either a stroke of genius or a lucky gamble that paid off on the part of our manager. Couldn't tell you where he played for Brentford tbf, but I'd imagine he'd have been out on the wing.

Sometimes stats can only tell you so much.
Report marychain1 July 26, 2013 12:35 PM BST
Higdon was very mediocre at Crewe. He always looked like he might make a player of sorts but was a target for the Gresty Road boo boys from very early on in his Alex career. To be honest his main problem was he wasn't either of the players he was trying to replace, Rob Hulse or Dean Ashton.
