This is just ridiculous taxing 10% a winning bet. And I'm pretty sure the calculation of taxation will include the initial stake of the bet and not only the profit LaughLaughLaughLaughCrazyCrazyCrazyCrazy WE ARE OFFICIALLY DOOMED.
Report agaz November 27, 2012 10:29 AM GMT
So lets say you bet 100 on evens and win another 100.

Betfair will take 5 on standard commission.
Greek Government will claim 10% of the 'winnings'. For them winnings is everything stake+profit LaughLaughLaughLaughLaugh
So the Greek taxman will get 20.

So you are left with 75 winnings. Aka 25% charge LaughLaughLaughLaugh

The Greeks and paying tax...

The shocking scale of tax dodging in Greece was laid bare yesterday in a report showing that professionals are among the worst offenders.

The study found that self-employed Greeks evaded a staggering £22.4billion of tax in 2009 – almost half the size of the country’s deficit in 2008 and a third of the shortfall in 2009.

The chief offenders were doctors, engineers, private tutors, accountants, people in financial services and lawyers, according to the report by economists at Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago.

It came as Greek ministers held talks with the troika of inspectors from the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund over its emergency aid.
Report ShirleyKnot November 27, 2012 10:37 AM GMT
One thing Greeks seem very good at is paying not very much in tax to their Exchequer, so if they apply those skills to using betfair they will still be here.

Good luck with your mission.
Report ShirleyKnot November 27, 2012 10:38 AM GMT
Typed that as Marxist - L did.
Report agaz November 27, 2012 10:50 AM GMT
Nice copy pasta. But tax evasion/avoidance is not Greece's main problem.

Greece suffered for many years the worst case of cronyism by political parties hiring voters as public servants. The two main political parties Pasok (Central-Left) and Nea Dimokratia (Central-Right) hired literally 100,000's of voters into the public sector will no qualifications besides being a voter.

Are you aware that once one got hired into the public sector they were made for life? No possibility of getting fired. Public servant for life no matter what. Even for convicted criminals they hardly fired anyone, only in the most extreme of cases.

So what happened when Greece got into the Eurozone? Free money happened. They could borrow at the same rates as Germany basically. So instead of rationalising and reforming the public sector they kept giving them more money and hiring more voters.

Who rational individual making ends meet in the private sector working endless of hours, would want to give half his money back to a system build to feed the cronies of the political parties? Not me. Not anyone with half a brain.

So saying that Greeks don't pay taxes is half the story. The whole story is they don't want the government to redistribute their wealth to the cronies of the political parties leeching off of the corrupt Greek public sector.
Report agaz November 27, 2012 10:57 AM GMT
The solution to Greece's problem is firing half the public servants and reforming the economy to make it investor friendly.

This bill is another joke protecting the government monopoly on gamble through its former company OPAP. Which is supposedly being privatise right now, but in reality is filled with partisan cronies who want to keep getting paid without doing nothing, so any sight of free-market would destroy them.

I am not a geek but there are some on here who could tell you more about the process of getting a VPN.  In simple terms I am led to believe that you go through it and log on to Betfair.  It will hide your IP address from the Government spys and blockers.

Have a loook on the German thread about this same subject.  I posted a conversation with a computer geek friend of mine and go have a look at the link at the top of this post.

What is Virtual Private Network?

VPN technology is based on the idea of tunneling that involves establishing and maintaining logical network connection.

With this connection, packets constructed in a specific VPN protocol format are encapsulated within some other base or carrier protocol, then transmitted between a VPN client and server, and finally de-encapsulated on the receiving side.

No one can tell your real IP address or identify your locality.

All the programs installed on your computer will be working automatically via VPN, which is the main difference between VPN and proxy server, requiring software support for proxy connection.

I think the leftist ideology of the last 30 years that mainly governed Greece turned us into a soviet type democracy of big government business and destroyed any real investments coming and creating wealth. Every major investment is always blocked in courts by leftists and environmentalists with far-left agendas.

So yeah, any leftist loon can blame the financial industry for cheating on taxes and making a situation worse, but in reality most people right now have to avoid taxes to survive. Almost 1 million jobs were lost in the private sector the last few years. It's only getting worse.

We are having a big issue over here with the firing of only 2,000 public servants, the left party in the government coalition is threatening to drop their support if they fire anyone.

And at the same time the same the main leftist opposition party are making promises that whoever is fired from the public sector will be re-hired once they get in power. Pure madness !!!!!!

If a Greek resident is discussing how to use betfair on a public forum then they are not very smart.  Hopefully the smart ones will have acted months ago as this is not new news, no way was it ever going to be viable for betfair to continue to openly operate in Greece.

Its not the Greek people who are to blame - it's the politicians who destroyed it. Cronyism taken to extremes - it leaves people who would otherwise obey the rules and pay their tax with no option other than to cheat the system themselves.
