It's the debate that's splitting football, that's for sure - On one side we have the likes of Ronald Koeman, Fabio Capello, Roberto Mancini, Joan Laporta, Leonardo and Carlo Ancelotti that seem to rate the fellow, but on the other side that opinion is clearly outweighed by the disdain of perennial forum fukcwit, mesmerised.

There must be hundreds and hundreds of volleys attempted in the english leagues every week so its inevitable that some are going to fly in and look brilliant like Crouchs. What we saw last night was a player execute not only a fantastic goal but also attempt something rarely ever seen - thats what makes it such a great goal. It has a WOW factor. Almost every football fan who saw that goal last night had a double-take of "how the hell did he do that !!!". Then the smart arses analyse for hours afterwards and come to the conclusion that its a fluke or it doesnt count as it was a friendly or that he would never pull that off again- do me a favour.
Its a wonderful moment of genius that is unlikely to be repeated and should be treated as such. |

Good post Wallis. You can apply the 'it could have gone anywhere' to any shot, the fact it didn't was becuase it was executed perfectly.
The fact that it was in a meaningless friendly shouldn't take anything away from the technique and the sheer opportunism of the man. |

ZI basically had an overhead kick into an empty net. Keeper nowhere to be seen and nobody on the line. No doubt the tecnique was of the highest order, but not 'best goal ever' imo.

Regular Fries already answered that for you - volleys can go anywhere just like Rooneys 'shinner' that didnt even hit his foot but went in. You might as well write off every great goal ever scored unless the same person does it again to prove that the first wasnt luck. Your problem Mes (along with many others) is that you cant separate your opinion of the player from the goal. If that had been Rooney you would have had the kleenex out along with a lot of other Man U fans declaring it as the best goal ever. You are obviously not a fan of Ibra (neither am I) but you are letting it cloud your judgement and you are looking for reasons NOT to appreciate the goal. |

The argument that it was lucky because it could've gone anywhere is a poor one. Any player who has ever hit a volley, could've hit it anywhere.
Rooney doesn't score flying over head kicks every week and his shot could've gone anywhere but it didn't, it went in so it was a great goal. To turn the argument round, Zlatan saw the keeper off his line, reacted in a split second, hit an over head kick and the ball went exactly where he wanted it to go. You've no rightful claim to call it lucky when the ball went exactly where he meant it to go. |

I have very few problems, I am the voice of reason a I demonstrate on a regular basis - I haven't said it was a bad goal, I've said it was a lucky goal,, what part of that are people struggling with, nobody can argue that scoring a goal with your back to it, not knowing fully where the defence is, is worth of such admiration, he took a punt and it paid off - and that my friends is exactly what is was, a punt, IMVHAHO.
What makes me laugh is that, when people are floundering, they being to rely on insults as a way to make their point seem more prevalent, as if losing your rag makes your view right because you're more passionate about it - stick to the facts. Fact is, it wouldn't make the top 30 goals of all time in any one's list unless they were born in the last 24 hours. You've no rightful claim to call it lucky when the ball went exactly where he meant it to go. I have every right, everyone that takes a shot at goal means it to hit the net, his shot was no different and many a better goal has been scored - in matches that actually matter - and where it's not 'hit and hope' because that is exactly what it was. |

Agreed. The claim that its 'lucky' when in a split second the guy manages to assess the situation, the whereabouts of the goal and then hit it with enough power and accuracy to score is laughable.
People hit volleys week after week and everyone could name 3 or 4 off the top of their heads that they prefer but you will struggle to think off anything to come close to last nights goal. Im not saying its the greatest goal ever but finding fault in it is just ridiculous. |

Football at its best is an artform. And like any artform..music, painting,literature not everybody has the same capacity to appreciate or understand it.With music for example you might say it is down to taste and everyones opinion is equal.But it is not.A Van Goth painting will always be a masterpiece even if thousands of people say its not. The fault is with them and not the painting. They do not have the capability to understand.This is the situation with this goal.There are those who will not be able to understand the difference between this goal and say Rooneys or Croachs or many others.That is their loss.

You're twisting things wallis to suit your own argument - which clearly holds no water. I'll simplify it for you so there's no confusion -
-The technique was good -The goal was not a bad goal -The goal was a lucky goal -If he tried it a thousand times it would fail 99 times. and mata is in the 40-45 range FWIW. With Crouch's goal he at least knew where both the players in front of him were along with the goal, and still mange to sore an incredible goal at an incredible tight angle. Rooney's goal was better but he was in a much tighter position surrounded by player with the ball comning to his feet at a much faster pace, but not the best over head kick I've ever seen given it came off his shin. |

I fail to see how the four points you've made dont apply to Crouch and Rooney especially as you say that Rooneys came off his shin which surely makes it a fluke as he didnt intend to shin it into the net.

it was a good goal.. but it wasn't a beautiful goal...the fact that there was no keeper to guard the net cheapens the goal
granted..his control and technique was brilliant, but i dont this goal was a work of art in the same wat as Zidanes volley in the CL final. definitely a better than average goal but not the greatest goal of all time. |

Just seen the goal for the first time and call it 'lucky' is plain daft. It was a perfectly executed goal and I'm sure the harder he has trained and the more he has practised the luckier he has got. But to say it was the best goal ever (although it is a great goal) can't be true as it is nothing like as good as the Van Basten one or Maradonna or a few others that I can think of.

I'm particularly amused by the fact that you think a player who's played for 6 of the worlds biggest clubs scored a goal which was a fluke yet a player who's more famous for a robot dance and his bird than his football ability, scored a great goal.

Who wants to read the same post again for the 10th - 15th time, I can't renumber how many times now I've lost count, but poor wallis needs it drumming into him apparently.
The technique is not in doubt, but the goal was a lucky goal for the following reasons. - There was no goalkeeper there to save it. - There was no defenders in close proximity. - He couldn't see the goal when he struck it. hth |
