actually 4 years since they were in it i think
2008 lost to Aalborg IIRC |
By:
Celtic have never lost to Portuguese opposition at home - 9 wins and 1 draw
May I present Sir Neil Lennon ![]() Benfica won't lose. |

Benfica price is to low, they have pretty much no midfielders, an adapted winger (Melgarejo) in the left of the defense, the only right defender (Maxi Pereira) is suspended and they will play with a center back there, their captain Luisão (center back) is also suspended.

hernani..thank you for the information
i can reciprocate..celtic are pish. |

Alright then, your money, do as you please :)
By:
good info Hernani
By:
as soon as celtic face a team that can match them they crumble, i expect 0-3

What do you mean they have no midfielders?
Aimar, Cesar, Perez, Ola John, Salvio all seem pretty capable midfielders to me. Whoever plays out of Cardozo, Nolito and Rodrigo will be a handful up front as well, and they have new signing Lima from Braga too. Actually can he play or is he cup tied? Benfica might be lacking at the back but i just think they have far too much going forward for Celtic to deal with. They have a defence marshalled by Mulgrew and Kelvin Wilson ![]() |
By:
the only worry is benfica happy with a point
light years ahead on ability |
By:
Aimar - hardly lasts one half, and withthis coach pretty much plays as an attacker - doesn't help on defense
Cesar - He is originally a winger, currently does what Aimar does, but is capable of a full match Perez - Winger, hardly ever plays Salvio - Winger Olah John - Winger, only a couple of games in pre season And you're forgetting Matic, likely to be starting the game. A very bellow average midfielder, with only a few games last season. None of this players is capable of helping in the defense, which as I explained above lacks two starting XI players, and will have two adapted players on the sides. Also, until 2 weeks ago, the midfielders where Javi Garcia (moved to City) and Witsel (moved to Zenit). None of the above guys (except Aimar) ever played in the midfield. |
By:
Fair points, however i still think they'll be too good going forward for Celtic's defence to deal with
By:
Are you a Benfica Fan , Hernani? We don't usually get this level of knowledge on here
![]() |
By:
Maybe Biscuit.
Certainly i think they will get the chance to come forward . Celtic in The CL under Strachan were painful to watch, with the negativity. Lennon may not be a great manager but he seems to have a go at the opposition regardless, so should be a decent game. |

I'm Portuguese, I know portuguese soccer, I know Benfica, not so Much celtic.
Benfica has a very attacking mentality but their coach is known for choosing very unbalanced starting XIs even with the squad at their full force. He will struggle this match for sure, but if things go the right way, they may be capable of soring lots of goals, but I can also see them suffering at least one. Just trying to offer some piece of advice here, not advertising it as free money or anything like that. Cross this info with what you guys know about Celtic and make your minds :) |
By:
hernani - is Lima allowed to play?
A couple of sites say he is, but he played in the qualifier for Braga, so surely he'd be cup tied? |
By:
ty hernani..you dont realise how crap celtic are...they are poor
By:
Biscuit, I believe rules changed, you can play in the groups stage even if you played the qualifying for a different team. I don't think he will start though.
And really, I have no clue how crap they are, was planning to watch them Saturday, but didn't get out of bed in time :) |
By:
Celtic will probably lose a goal at some stage during the 90 mins & it is doubtful that they will score 2 on the night, a lay of celtic is probably the way to go unless you fancy Benfica strongly.

Celtic have beaten Benfica twice in last 6 year at parkhead in groups
By:
and Porto too
By:
I mean, they also beat Porto not long ago, 2005 I believe
By:
one year after Porto won the CL
By:
Think its only 1 defeat in 15 home group games at parkhead and that was Barcelona with Larsson
By:
porto was 2001 and not sure if played them again
in they 15 games beat ac milan when milan where champions |
By:
what happened in the past has zero relevance to NOW
By:
considering celtics recent form Benefica is a delicious value
By:
alos juve, benfica twice, lyon , bayern munich have all went and never won
By:
CHASER post your bet please..thanks
By:
I think that the past always have some relevance (lets call it 2% of the all cake). Those kind of things float in players heads, there's always that record to break, or in Celtics case, that feeling of invincibility in their home stadium, etc, etc.
By:
kenny not bet yet
By:
but one thing for sure is i wont be backing benfica
By:
the record may be in the past but i guarantee when celtics away from home the previous away form will be brought into it.0 wins in 15 lol
By:
What do we think, lads? Celtic price to come in a bit from here ? I want to lay them but I'd hate to miss out on a lower price.
By:
didnt thet beat helsingborgs away?
By:
I'm waiting for tomorrow newspapers to make a final decision. I'll post any relevant info here if you guys want to.
By:
moanrinho is mates with benfica coach..has bigged them up
if they cant beat the tic he will look rather foolish. |
By:
in the groups kenny 0 in 15
this year beat helinski away also |
By:
Not really true sofia, benfica's coach likes people to think that :)
In any case, if you guys are looking for a price drop on celtic, Luisão punishment in CL was only declared today, so the market hasn't quit adapted yet, I believe Celtic will drop a bit. |
