"People forget how intelligent he is. He was Jose's trusted sidekick for many years. WHat he did at chelsea is best forgotten, theyre a different club to others,"
That doesn't automatically make him anything special though, it's like saying Emile Heskey would become an awesome striker because he worked alongside Michael Owen. Some people are simply not cut out to be managers and yet are excellent coaches, that could be the case with AVB. Or perhaps he's just not that good full stop and can only win trophies with utterly dominant teams like Porto. |

not sure what ur input has added Mcik. He is what 36 years old, has had 3 jobs where in 2 performed above expectations. I think he deserves to be forgiven for his Chelsea stint for reasons ive given. He has only been managing for 3 or so years and already achieved more than most, so yes he has plenty of scope to improve. #How long did Sir Alex take to start being successful??
Your comparison to Heskey/Owen is flawed, its nothing like it. Jost trusted him to gather key facts to help him make his informed decision. It was a choice Jose made and he's certainly no mug. Owen did not choose Heskey |
|
By:
Mcik's input is to curb your enthusiasm. As much as you'd like to forgive/forget his stint at the chavs it was an unmitigated disaster, at the end of which he had pissed off both the team and the management before committing professional suicide with the immature interviews he gave to speed up his dismissal.
He was a sidekick, as much Jose's protege as Igor was Dr Frankenstein's. His high profile owes more to the Russian paying the exorbitant release fee (although he was advised to appoint Hiddink) than anything he's achieved himself. His record at Porto was played 51, won 45, drew 4, lost 2. That isn't down to exceptional management, that's down to a ridiculously dominant team in a Micky Mouse league. The Micky Mouse epithet applies equally to the Europey League. AVB's appointment is a big risk and every opponent in the first few games are going to try to pile on the pressure because he has to come up with the goods immediately. |

By:
Spurs are taking a massive risk.
If they are not in the top 3 after 5 games, bearing in mind the fixtures they have, the pressure will be on AVB and Levy |
|
By:
Whomever they appoint, they are taking a massive risk. It is still not as great a risk of leaving a proven tactical dunce in charge of our best squad in living memory, but it is a risk nonetheless.

"of" - as - apologies

|
By:
Jed It would not be a massive risk appointing someone like Moyes, proven in the Prem with a limited budget.
Appointing AVB,a Premiership failure as little as 8 months ago is a massive risk |
|

Hippie if your going to state 'facts' then use like for like comparisons.
2010/11 porto won the league with 84 pts, AVB in charge. 2009/10 3rd with 68 points 2008/2009 1st with 70 points. last season 1st with 75 points. His year in charge he did the treble and the only time in history porto have gone unbeaten. You can put it down to it being a 'Mickey mouse league', that is an opinion not a fact. The stats show the team were far superior under his management. There no doubting his time at chelsea was a disaster, and he is a risk to an extent, but he is a good risk to take, and we should be enthusiastic out this appointment, and not taking on a 'mr reliable' such as moyes. And disagree that his profile was down to the fee...it was the nature of his career. He and Jose fell out when AVB decided to go it alone, as Jose knew he was integral. I know who's judgement i'd back out of Jose's and the AVB knockers. |
|
By:
Pitting your wits against other managers in the Portuguese league is a very far cry from doing it against the like of Fergie etc etc
|
|
By:
based on your 'facts' we should have interviewed the Dinamo Zagreb manager for the job as well then.
|
|
By:
Even Moyes has had his disasters. Finished 17th one season with Everton and getting their lowest ever points total into the bargain, but that gets airbrushed from history--whereas AVB's season with Chelsea must be taken into account.
There are no, risk-free managerial appointments for us. So we may as well focus on the potential upside of any manager that comes in, rather than focus on bad seasons that they have had in the past. |
|
By:
based on your opinions managers like guus hiddink (flopped at Real), hodgson (flopped at Inter), sir Alex (early man utd)...judging by your opinion these lot (to name just a few) should have been thrown on the scrapheap years ago. And none of these had to put up with the strong Abramovic/Senior chelsea players relationship.
Maybe try focus on qualities and not just negatives |
|
By:
What must be taken into account is how he carries himself as a man. he way he went about getting himself sacked was a disgrace.
AllinR1, babble as much as you like but don't put words into my mouth. |
|
By:
and you can continue to point out ridiculous opinions, I think id rather take stats over your judgement anyday. You seemed obsessed with his stint at Chelsea, and are happy to disregard anything else. Maybe try and look at the whole picture.
And no words put in your mouth I was making a judgement based on your opinions in this thread, just as you have made a judgement on AVB's career/ability based soley on his ill fated stint at Chelsea. you can say all the crap youu like, just don't start crying when someone challenges you. |
|
By:
A familiar betfair forum scene, as Allin flounders among the non-sequiturs, denials of previous arguments, and general cretinousness that comes from entering into debate with hippie.
|
|
By:
Who knows what AVB will do at Spurs, to say he failed at Chelsea is nonsense, they were 5th and in both cups when he left. They finished 6th, who knows what would have happened in the cups.
Yep, its a massive risk, listening to some people on here he left Chelsea in 20th after a players revolt |

If it's not true then some sort of action should be taken against them. |

well exactly. he's not gonna sit around counting his money for 2 years before taking another job if he gets a good offer

I know he looks a shoe-in for the job but something still isn't sitting right with me; I'm expecting a twist in this saga

Assuming there's a smidgen of truth in that story why risk a guaranteed income when you've got a young family?
If he got sacked in October he'll lose something like a guaranteed £8m over the next 2 years. |
|
By:
Because he is confident in his own ability?
He must be worth a good few million already. I don't think it's surprising at all. |
|
By:
If the pay-off situation is true, then it pretty sums up what kind of a man AVB is. Instead of sulking and getting paid a fortune, go out there and prove you worth.
Sounds like a rare winners/fighters mentality. |
|
By:
Yes if this is true it's good news for Spurs, essentially he's taking a massive pay cut to join
As I say on the Spurs files he has to hit the ground running as even some Spurs fans want him to fail |
|
By:
^or if the geezer just sits around after what happened at chelsea,he knows his stock will fall even more and lets be honest he will probably earn a decent amount at WHL.

If I'm not mistaken, Blanc could not have spoken to Spurs before today, the day his contract expired. I don't think it is a coincidence that AVB hasn't been named yet and it has also been quoted that Levy intends to speak to several candidates before making a decision. Whilst I'm resigned to AVB coming there is nothing that has happened yet that has 'totally' convinced me it is actually true. He is the only one who has been confirmed as having an interview but if Blanc is/was in the frame then only from today could that happen... I'm still a layer/trader on the market, whilst praying AVB is not selected as I see him as no more than a gamble.

I should have added that it would be very bad news indeed to be carrying a red on AvB but atm thee is still money there to allow a reverse.
