Rob, please note that I'm not knocking Modric, far from it. He is a lovely little player, with superb ball skills and unusual strength for a man his size. He's just not the player a lot of people think he is i.e a game-changer. I would keep him and add a game-changer given the choice, but Redknapp was right to think that £40m should have been trousered in exchange. Only Levy's intransigence denied him his move last pre-season, and it is to Modric's immense credit that he went about his business seemingly unaffected by his natural disappointment.

He got 17 League goals? Big deal. How many did Defoe score? And in how many minutes on the pitch compared to Adebayor? Defoe - 11 in 25 games Adebayor - 17 in 33 games No idea on actual minutes played. I don't care if Defoe got a goal every 10 minutes, there must be a reason why Harry didn't play him. And in any case that's still irrelevant as my point isn't about how good Defoe is, it's that you'll be a weaker squad without Adebayor. Only a fool would argue that the leagues 4th top scorer (and 4th highest assists too) won't be a loss to the squad. |
|
By:
He would of course be a loss to any squad in numerical terms, but my point is that at the prices and wages quoted, he is about as much of a bargain as the Trident missile system. Spurs will of course need to buy two-centre-forwards before the start of the season anyway having lost Pavlyuchenko and possibly van der vaart, and spending so much of the budget on a guy who puts it all in about twice a season makes no sense whatsoever.

Problem with anyone like jed who watches a game on tv is an expert who fail to see what the tv doesn't show.
Modfric is THE GO-TO player in the prem,i.e.he turns defense into attack without giving the ball away which is something you can not say about anyone else in the prem. It is well known his only weakness is he doesn't score enough goals. |
|
By:
What I should have added that if he has any sense he will put in a transfer request if AVB is the manager, and that's spoken as a Spurs season ticket holder.
|
|
By:
figgy you plank he put in a request under Redknapp who was ok with him leaving, it was Levy who dug his heels in

H and Levy played good cop, bad cop, although blackburn is too dumb to realise that.
Any team in their right mind would want Modric ebul,if he goes it's extremely unlikely he would go to one of our parochial or national rivals. |

By:
figgy, do you think Bale was told the new boss before signing a new deal?
|
|
By:
I think he was, you wouldnt sign a new deal if you had top teams interested in you if you chose to leave unless you knew who was going to be in charge.
|
|
By:
Bale was almost certainly told, but then he may also have a lot more faith in the whole set up at Spurs than some supporters i could mention.
He'd also know how his fellow players feel - i'd guess that most feel particularly p1ssed off that the aren't playing CL this season and at least a few will place the blame at the door of the greatest manager who ever lived. And i'm sure he is aware of the general progression at the club, from top to bottom, which had b*gger all to do with the old manager. |

It would be typical of footballers not to take any responsibility for the poor end of season form when there is a ready made excuse in 'Arry.

Yeah i'm sure the players weren't out on their feet for the final 2 months due to s0d all rotation/bad tactics and it was just a case of them not trying hard enough.

i so hate when people use s*** like 'that's spoken as a Spurs season ticket holder'
not sure why that would qualify the opinion to be any better than others. There is no doubt Modric is an excellent player...but he's certainly not irreplaceable in the team. For me he's a quality workhorse. If Levy can get a good fee for him (which he will if he go's then fine)...the statement has been made with Bales new contract. AVB is a brilliant acquisition, unlike the ill fated Ramos situation. He's not tied to another club so no compensation needed and no doubt Levy has negotiated a good (cheap) exist strategy should things go wrong... Brilliant signing if it happens. People forget how intelligent he is. He was Jose's trusted sidekick for many years. WHat he did at chelsea is best forgotten, theyre a different club to others, a club where the owner has close relationships with the players. That doesnt happen at other clubs. If Modric wants to leave then he should,I dont think Spurs will suffer, and I look forward to what AVB can do in charge. |

Rate reply: | report block user He was exactly that, he did the deep homework for Jose, the true tactical research. Jose and him fell out when AVB decided he wanted to go alone, and what he did for Porto was amazing. We had coaches like Joe Jordan, in the past Chris Houghton. I'd happily take a tactical, intelligent genius any day. I couldn't ask for a better manager to come on board (given all the variables)and if it pays off this is the time Spurs will move forward. If it doesnt work, I suspect AVB will be gone in 7 or so months with a small pay off. Harry did a great job....But he was never the man to take us that next step forward. AVB represents an ambitious young winner. Take his ill fated chelsea stint out of things....and this is potentially the signing of the season (if it happens that is) |
|
By:
Why would you "take his ill fated Chelsea stint out of things"?
It's just as relevant as his success at Porto. I felt a bit sorry for he way he seemed to be treated at Chelsea, but ultimately his man management - the single most important trait in successful managers - was found wanting. He may be a success, but it's a big risk. |

as you say he was great at the job,i listened to him many a time and he was very interesting, but sadly his man management skills are dire. He could have got away with that many years back, but now if players dont like a manager they are fooked |

I've watched Modric live plenty of times and on the TV too. I have long held the view that he is the most over-rated player in the divison. He is a good player, don't get me wrong. But he isn't this world-beater, I just don't know where it comes from.
He often goes missing in games against big sides, especially away from home. Against poor sides or weak midfields, he can dominate. He doesn't score many and gets very few assists. Contrast that with the likes of Pirlo and Xavi, these players get lots of assists. And then he isn't particularly good defensively either. He recylces possession and moves the ball forwards well. IMO, that on its own ain't worth mega millions. We probably won't find a direct replacement for him, but I would sooner have Bale, Adebayor or VdV in the squad than Modric, because these players actualy provide tangible worth. (And before anyone is tempted, don't give me some pseudo-intellectual balls about Match of the Day players). I'm glad we didn't sell to Chelsea, just because it's Chelsea. But the £40m on offer was an incredible price, way over the top. |

A good player ofcourse but he certainly has a few weaknesses. Great players dont have weaknesses. |

Berto if you'd read my post before, you'd have seen that it is my opinion that at Chelsea they have a different set-up to any other team, in that the chairman has a personal relationship with many of the senior players ( JT, Frankpard etc), and so he was undermined there. At no other team would this have happened. sj 28 Jun 12 17:45 Joined: 16 Nov 02 | Topic/replies: 11,893 | Blogger: sj's blog allinR1 as you say he was great at the job,i listened to him many a time and he was very interesting, but sadly his man management skills are dire. He could have got away with that many years back, but now if players dont like a manager they are fooked. SJ, you say this but how do we know? his man managment skills took porto to win the league unbeaten (or close to it) and looking the winners of the UEFA cup from the start. Lets not forget this is a guy in his early 30's. Im saying he's perfect, but i think theres potential for huge success, and valid excuses for his failures. He is tatically very astute, and very intelligent. Again, he has no current club, and no doubt Levy will negotiate a great exit strategy. |
|
By:
Bit harsh you two, the top level is Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Ronaldo, he's not that level but he's the tier below.
Bale could reach the top level IMO |
|
By:
True Blackburn, but that's why I feel he is so over-rated. I think most fans and even managers put him in that top level of midfield player (With Xavi, Pirlo, Schweinsteiger). He isn't in their league, imo. He is a good player though and he can be a joy to watch at times, no doubt.
Then again, if Jose wants him, who am I to argue? But then Jose plays Arbeloa as his right-back when he could buy anyone. Sometimes, even the best have blatantly got things wrong! ![]() |

How many examples of a team turning on their manager have their been in football? even if there are problems most have the respect to keep it to themselves and in public praise the manager and wish him well on their way. You don't know why he acted that way? I imagine he was trying to 'manage'a team who obviously decided that they were more powerful. Seriously...You want to judge a man's skills on a job he held for what 5 months?? walofs. It's football, but this is the real world. I can think of no manager at hi age who has achieved so much. At his age seldom do you find a manager, but he has been successful and is still learning. Seriously, what planet do people like you come from??? |

Not cloud cuckoo land, the man was a (expensive) failure who did not use one ounce of common sense, there is no reason why he won't reproduce the same form he showed at Chavski.
6 months down the line feel free to dig up this thread, should we be silly enough to employ him. |

Nobody told Roman to pay the £15m or whatever to buyout his contract, nobody told him to spend £50m on torres or the hundreds of millions he has spent (net) on buying crap.
No offence but the only person who seems to have no common sense apart from Roman is you Fig. Daniel Levy is no mug. I have no doubt that if AVB flops, he will be booted out after 6 months with a minimal payout (and no contract to buy out now), I also believe AVB is a class act waiting to happen, be it with spurs or some other club down the line. Happily bring this thread up whenever you want, just think about that crap ur saying. No doubt your the type of supporter who believes that Redknapp finishing 4th/5th every year was the way forward for the club. He did aq great job, but he was never gonna push us to that next level. AVB is a gamble in a sense, but a smart gamble, and has the potential to do great things. Im excited by the prospect and hope he succeeds |

like i said i am not doubting his knowledge but imo in this day and age the player is king. He didn't just upset the big boys at chelsea, the fringe players and youngsters were used as cone movers in training sessions. Now that might have been a one off(at chelsea) but if he hasn't learn't from that experience and treats players the same at WHL it wont be long before he 'loses the dressing room' again |

Smart in the transfer market, not so hot when it's come to appointing managers. In fact he's certainly appointed some mugs. |

LEvy is guilty of making mistakes, I think he's smart enough to have learned from them |

Fair point. I basically agree with you that AVB could be an excellent manager but is a bit of a risk. His man management would worry me but maybe he's learned some lessons and will have a more receptive squad to work with. Hope he does well for you.
I still think you've all taken 'Arry's achievements for granted though. You're a hard lot to please ![]() |

Levy has made some bad appointments, but one thing is for sure--he won't stick with them just to save face. See Jol to Ramos to Redknapp. If the next guy is no good, he'll get the boot and someone else will get a go.
