It'll be hard to make a a long term living because of the risks involved but you can make some decent profit Happy

10 rules i've just quickly written up that i think are vital.

1) you need a natural intelligent understanding of your chosen sport(s).
we all know people who bet alot and have liked a sport their whole life but they don't have a bloody clue.
hours of studying aren't needed like your told.
an hour a day is all you need when you have rule 1.
if you dont have rule 1 and you know deep down you don't. give up now.
2) at least a few years betting experience where you can see that you've improven ten fold without making the same silly mistakes you would have in the early days.
3) a big betfair bank. i mean BIG.
4) patience, alot of it. your betfair bank might be building slowly but at least its building. also be prepared some days to watch many horse races for example without that right moment to strike.
5) begin with the end in mind, you need a target or you wont know when enough is enough and the inevitable losses prevail.
6) self belief but not cockyness.
7) master the art of laying. 99% of my bets are.
8) guts, you need to know when and when not to go in deep, without fearing the liability. i personally rarely lay anything under 100/1. yes under.
9) Discipline, never sway from your own rules (like getting sucked into media hyped events). after several winning days-weeks in a row you may feel invincible. without discipline you'll soon realise you're a mug.
10) you create your own luck. its never the horse or footballers fault u lost. u made the bet. probably a bad 1. take responsibilty for your bets and everything in your life for the matter, and good things soon follow.

11. the race will not always go to the fastest, nor the fight to the strongest.......................but thats the way to bet

Disagree with no. 3.

Why do you need a big bank? You can make money with 2k in your bank and you could lose money if you had 50k in your bank, what does it matter?

Yes of course you can do it as a full time job if your the luckiest person in the world! You'll have good days and you'll have bad days but usually the bad days kill you off eventually......its not a way to make a living in my eyes!

no.3 is a reflection of my own methods. perhaps i'm not good enough to make it pay without a big bank. a big bank means you can hit your targets quicker with less bets, laying at bigger odds.

Anyone who can't make it pay thinks that no one else can. It would be funny if it wasn;t so embarrassing.

Obviously not if you never lay anything under 100/1

i'm all about playing it safe. most would have backed frankel to win yesterday, it was a sure thing. i knew it was. but i didn't back it. i was happy laying an outsider who i knew their engine would cut out int he final few furlongs. it's just my way. i see plenty of good shorter price lays. but i'd rather decrease the risk. get in and get out. aslong as i hit my target i'm happy. Happy

No that's fair enough, if you have a strategy and it works for you then it's all good. Backing 1.01s all day would test the patience of most on here though.

Out of interest what's the biggest odds lay you've placed that's gone and won (ie. you lost)

it's been a long time since i lost a "big" amount. it was about 40/1 and i lost £800. i haven't lost anything near that since. it made me become how strict i am today.

when i say a serious bet i mean sometimes when i get a good few quid over what my target was for the day, i'll put that into a fancy i have in a footy match that evening, especially if i'm going to watch with friends. but if there isn't a game on or a angle i saw in it i'll just use it to give myself a smaller target for the next day.
sometimes for a pretty small amount like on saturday when i had bayern to win the most corners.
but it gave me an extra interest for the game that i was sure would profit.

So what is a typical lay for you then?

£2k liability to win £20 on a horse perhaps? Or we talking bigger?

most people say a daily target is the wrong way to go and i can understand why. it just works for me.

although it's not strict i allow days off. i don't HAVE to make a bet that day.

People think you need luck. But to make serious money you requires great skill. I try to make decent money but just can't.
