All any government has ever had to do is force the chavs and layabouts into seeing work as neccessary and not an option. By that I mean make life on the scroung untolerable/close to impossible.

Australia isnt in the European Union though
The UK is and has obligations accordingly.
And leaving Europe is not an option for a myriad of reasons from political to economic

The reason it seems like a one way system is most English people dont bother learning a second language, where as the rest of Europe learns English, thus giving them the option of working in multiple countries.
The European Union allows Freedom of movement for workers we only appear to lose out because our young people are incapable of going and working in france / germany.
If people from the UK go abroad to work, its usually to English speaking countris, USA, Canada, Australia, and as they arent in the EU, its less open.

If we bothered more with languages we could export more workers all across Europe. But we are English, and arrogant, and too lazy to bother.

Incidentally unemployment in Spain for 18-24yr olds is around 50%
Which is horrific
Its about 20% here
And around 8% in Scandinavian countries

Using the Google Translate.. I've found thousands and thousands of posts from people in Poland, asking questions about their up and comming move to the UK and how to get benefits ASAP.

One interesting trick i've learned.. is you can phone up the job centre, lie and say you're a self-employed cleaner to get a National Insurance Number. Then the world is your oyster, as a FOREIGN Eu national.
Report Pootle April 19, 2012 8:50 PM BST
I find it bizarre that people dont understand the concept of the European Union, and freedom of work movement. Especially if they are a football fan.

There are 27 countries in the European Union, some with higher unemployment than us, some with lower, people are free to seek work, even part time in any of these countries. So if Polish people or Bulgarian or Greek, or Dutch or whoever, can get the offer of a job in the uk, even part time, then legally they can move here, likewise anyone here can get a job in one of those countries and move there, and take their family too.

Granted we dont export footballers, becuase they are also generally too stupid to learn another language, yet you get someone like, Dietmar Hamman, and he can speak 5 languages.

I'm not advocating learning more languages by the way, after all the language of business is generally English. I just think people need to understand the reasoning.

I guess we could isolate ourselves and remove ourselves from the European Union, but I think that might prove unwise.

Pootle - Re: being more like Australia

I accept what your are saying with regards to people from the EU... But what about the rest of the world??? I think it's fair to say that we needn't accept large ammounts of unskilled Africans and Asians.

In truth my comments about being Australia were more wishful thinking then anything else, even if we had the option to do so I doubt our politicians would have the b0110cks

As far the English not learning other languages goes, at worst it is our loss and we are not hurting others by doing so.

As far as Unemployment statistics go, do you trust them??? They definition of what is "unemployed" has and will be adjusted. Add into it all the 18-24 yr olds at the holding pen that is now Uni and it's probably more than 20%.

I dont think we accept large amounts of unskilled Africans or Asians, honestly I dont. But without official numbers I couldnt say.

But honestly, people need to get away from the diea that benefits are the problem.

Tax evasion, by the national fraud authorities own statistics costs 15 times more per year, than benefit fraud or cheating.

The problem is not too many people scrounging benefits, thats a myth. The problem is too many large companies and wealthy people dodging tax. Did you see the statistics last week that 'surprised' our own chancellor, this is the man employed to sort the budgets who was surprised to learn of the level of tax dodging in the country by the richest.

Then you have companies who route money through head quarters in the cayman islands to avoid tax, its also a well known tax dodge route for footballers btw, any of them who are clued up, pay less tax than you or I do percentage wise.
Or take Sir Phillip Green, he is a SIR, a knight of the realm, and he routes his money from top shop to his wife in monaco. I think it was around 2005, he avoided paying 280million in tax that year by paying her a dividend in excess of 1billion.

Tax avoidance by companies and individuals costs in excess of 20 BILLION per year.

"Chancellor George Osborne says he is "shocked" that some of the UK's richest people have organised their finances so that they pay virtually no income tax."
This is the **** in charge of the countries money !

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-17661011

Point being, the benefit system either through fraud or having people coming into the country, is not the big problem, thats just a magician saying look at my left hand, whilst his right hand fixes the cards.

As for the languages, my point on that, was why we dont export many workers across europe when we could / can. Yup we shoot ourselves in the foot, but its our fault.

As for unemployment stats, I agree they can be woolly, but provided they are emasured roughly the same between countries they can be compared.

What we need is companies in this country to pay more tax, to accept that their profits cant be sustained and they have to take less profit. Most of us have taken pay cuts in recent years, in that prices have gone up more than wages, but banks, oil companies, tescos, bt, virgin, etc etc, are all keeping profits almost as high as ever.
They need to accept a drop in profit
They need to pay more tax
And they need to employ more people

but they arent
we bailed out the banks and they are laughing at us
the big companies havent felt any financial squeeze
the rich havent
the rest of us have
and the companies, and certain media, and certain people will try and misguide you, and blame other people, because thats what they do.

I'm not saying its a big conspiracy, its just about being aware of things.
Yup benefit fraud costing us 2billion is bad
Tax dodging costing 30billion is worse
And if you think about it, which is worse
the guy claiming 65 quid a week who should
the woman cheating the system for an extra 30 quid a week
the foreign family of 5 claiming 100 quid a week
or
the premiership footballer earning 60k per week but paying 15% tax per year
or the company turning over billions a year but paying no tax on profits
or the bankers getting bailed out by us, but paying themselves untaxable bonuses

who is worse
and more the point
who do we benefit from most if we close the loop hole, better to go after those costing the economy 30billion, than those costing it 2billion

If those figures are correct it is of course logical to go after those commiting Tax fraud but can't we go after those who commit benefit fraud too? We live in a pretty advanced country after all.

Tax avoidance is another issue. But, If people who fraudlenley claim benefit money (be they British or otherwise) could screw us out of £2000 a month they would... All parasites are the same they will take what you allow. In this case the big companies have a bigger opportunity to screw us (shame on them).

shudacudas point about crime may not have been the most eloquent you'll see but it does raise a point. Immigration costs a lot more than just benefits.

There are many factors such as crime, health, education. Educating a child isn't cheap nor is the cost of looking after the whole family in terms of health.

So what if a family comes over and one of the parents takes a £6p/h job? The UK will still have to pay the Education and Health costs of the rest of the family.

Then you have the organised crime elemnet. Setting up trials and imprisoning other peoples scum will add to the cumalitive (sp?) cost too.

At the end of the day we need to work on our own problems in the UK.

Tax evasion is believed to be about 14billion the government spends over 120 billion more than it collects in taxation. This is despite the collect a whopping 600billion a year in total taxation.

Fuel duty alone is £27 billion a year, about 2% of gdp and just under  5% of total taxation.
The reason we pay high levels of tax is because the electorate elects a nanny interfering state government whether tory or labour which spends £727 billion a year to run itself badly.

we are taxed on everything, income, ni, council tax, vat, fuel, cigs, alcohol,  because the electorate chose big state government whether you voted labour, liberal or tory. High taxes are the electorates fault no one elses, the public gets what it deserves.

If people want to get p....d off with something then get p....d off with the state spending £727 billion a year or £220 billion to pay and pension public sector workers or £25 billion a year for overseas aid, wars and eu or messing up state procurement.

The government pay 50billion in debt interest by the end of this parliament it will be 70billion a year a differential greater than what will be saved if all evaders are caught. How about the government balances its budget long term it will save us more on debt interest alone.

If the state was cut in size you would pay less tax, less income tax, less vat.

Its time the country woke up to the incompetent mess all parties are and demanded a much better return for their money.

I agree we should go after all sides, but we can barely plug a hole in the sink, let alone track down all the problems. That in itself is a problem.

And I agree there is a crime cost, social cost etc. But I do think its often over blown.

I am not, at all, accusing anyone of being EDL or right wing or anything, let me say that first, but historically, in times of economic problems people tend to focus on and blame 'outsiders' not just in the uk, but the world over.

I'm not calling you or anyone else, stupid or racist, so please dont think I am, the point I am trying to make is, in times of crisis / economic hardship, the blame is usually put on those who are different etc, its not a case of racism, its almost an animalistic / tribal response. Its sociologically human nature, in fact it even happens in the animal kingdom. When things are going well, people are happy and arms are open for free hugs, when things go badly, the instinct is to close doors and turn on the outsiders. The problem is, the media and the government will play on that, and not just in the uk, it happens in the states, it happens in Japan, it happens in china, the world over. Things go bad, the perceived outsider is apportioned more blame.

Now I am not saying we dont have problems in this country due to immigration laws being softer than they should, and I agree there are some stupid examples of people using interpretations of laws etc to get their own way, but its often too easy to lose sight of the larger picture and bigger problems. Plus media and wealthy folk will play on fear and tribal nature, because it takes the heat off them - better to have people outraged about a bloke who cant be deported (and yes he should be) than be outraged about a government that just screwed old people in the budget etc.

So yes, I agree there are problems we have we need to sort, and we need to tighten immigration a little, but its really not quite as huge a problem as some media would have us believe. There are other issues, they just dont want us worrying about them, because they want to stay nice and cosy.

Population increases arent just down to immigration though.
We have longer life expectancy and it just goes up and up.

So if we had no immigration in the next 25 years at all
The population would still rise significantly due to less people dying, more people living longer, and people who are here breeding.

Part of our problem is the ageing population, who contribute nothing day to day but place a strain on all services.
I dont mean any disrespect in that by the way, its just fact, Average life span is over 80, pensioners dont earn, didnt save when they did earn, and need money to get by, and are the primary users of health care and social services. But we cant just kill them all off.

We need more young people in the country in order to survive, and we actually need to stop increasing life expectancy in this country.

Viva Logans Runs.

And if we want the government to spend less, by a significant amount, then we need to accept less state services.
Education, Police, Fire Service, NHS
They all cost money
IF people want education for their kids, NHS, and a police service, then it needs paying for.
IF people dont want that, and they want private education, private health and a depleted police force, then well stick around because thats what the tories are going to bring.
Just hope you fall on the side that can afford it.
And if you have ever been ill in america, you'll know how much health care can cost.

Its a creaking system thats not going to get better, but no politician will ever stand up and say, you know what people, we are all going to have to get used to being a little worse off.

They could raise bagfuls of cash though

It's ok Pootle, you've never come across as accusing me or others of being racist etc.

In truth we'll never know what is bigger the cost of immigration, with all the factors such as benefits, social housing, healthcare, education, crime and the effect of them filling jobs that British people could hold. Or the cost of Tax evasion... At the end of the day if you are getting screwd how can you tell the total cost? if you could you'd probably have a fair idea of who is actually screwing you.

For the record I've visited places such as India, Algeria, Egypt & Tunisia (Was in the Navy) And I can understand why people from such places (or Poland) would choose to come here.

I hold no ill against them, after all is said and done they are only trying to better themselves by doing so, if I lived there I'd probably try and come over here too. I just don't think our government should allow them to do so at our collective expense, especially when we have big problems of our own such as 3 million unemployed.

Might Whites 2008.

No one promises to make cuts in order to get elected... There just aren't enough sensible voters out there to make it a viable policy!!!

I agree to a point, I dont think we are that far apart in our thoughts, I do agree we need tighter borders and the like, and a government that wont accept every single tiny EU law etc.

But I reckon if immigration was sorted tomorrow we'd still have huge problems, unfortunately there isnt a golden bullet, and I am happy to be wrong, but ont he pie chart of problems and solutions, immigration would be lower down my list, still on the list, but lower down.

Of course we'd still have huge problems if we solved immigration tomorrow, if we shut our borders to everyone we'd still have the legacy of the previous 10-15 years to deal with.

Likewise if we solved Tax evasion we'd still have the laundry list of problems Mighty Whites 2008 listed.
