All bets are off as FA bans gambling by Premier League players... and even clubs' tea ladies
All players and club staff including part-timers have been banned from betting on a huge range of matches The FA has imposed tough new rules to stop Premier League stars gambling on football.
All players and club staff including part-timers have been banned from betting on a huge range of matches.
The rules – which also affect teams in the Championship, League 1 and League 2 – are aimed at making sure the game in England is not hit by the type of betting and match-fixing scandals that have tainted other countries and rival sports such as cricket.
Footballers and officials have been stopped from gambling on any league match, even if their team is not involved.
And they can’t bet on a game in a cup competition their club has been entered in, even if they have been knocked out.
They can’t even have football bets with friends. There is also a gambling ban on football topics such as which teams will be relegated and who will become the next manager of a club.
In the introduction to its new betting guide, the FA says the rules are to ensure players always have “a clear motivation to win the game, without any conflicting objectives”.
It adds: “It is vital for football to protect, and be seen to protect, the integrity and reputation of the game.”
Manchester United’s human resources chief has written to all staff, warning: “With immediate effect there is now a strict prohibition on betting on any match in any competition in which we will, are or have played in this season or future seasons.”
It adds that any breach of the rules could result in disciplinary action.
This month 80 Zimbabwean footballers were suspended due to alleged involvement in match-fixing betting scams. In Turkey nearly 100 people are on trial accused of match-fixing

Someone care to explain why?
Why on earth can't a league 2 player have a bet on City v United if he wants to? Pathetic rule.
The FA should concern themselves more with sorting out the centre of excellence that we've been waiting about 10 years for or looking at our sh*te refereeing week in week out, instead of worrying about John Smith of Macclesfield betting on the Merseyside derby.

Although its not clear, my reading of the article is that a player could bet on a league game as long as its not the league they are in, and therefore have some influence over. Otherwise the story would just have been 'banned from betting on all English football'.
If it is the case that anyone employed by a club can't bet on a competition in which they are involved, I think that's fair enough. But difficult to enforce.

Yes i see how you have drawn that conclusion, but I think it could be the way the sentence is written. Reading the man utd quote at the bottom suggests its just competitions in which they are involved.
You might be right, just saying i didn't the ban quite as widespread as you.

this just reminds the players not to be so stupid as to using there own account to gamble on football, cos then it would be traced,
just brush it under the carpet

Vaguely interesting. Seems they think travel agents may be involved in match fixing.
"A player is offered and accepts a week’s holiday from a local travel agent if his team loses. The player is in breach of the rules as he has accepted a gift from someone seeking to influence the conduct of a match"

I take that to mean that your club could be involved in any domestic league, cup and European competition in the future and therefore would be banned and only allowed to bet on foreign domestic league and cup competitions.
