I don't really hear people (unless they are northerners) applying the term "cockney" to people who aint from the east end. My family are all Londoners though (but few of them live there anymore). I'm not a Londoner, although I was born there.

I'm not even sure what part of east-london is the east-end and what isn't. I've been to east london a lot, as my grandparents lived/live there (Manor Park and Walthamstow). Though I don't think that qualifies as the east-end. My grandad is from Bethnal Green originally, (I think) and that is the east-end iirc. My parents grew up in Walthamstow/Hackney, so again, east-london but I don't know what counts as East End.

None of them are from South-Asia, in case you were wondering...

And , freddiek , true cockneys are more likely to support Arsenal : it's closer to Bow Bells ( off Cheapside ).

Pretty sure Edgware is in Middlesex , pipunch.
And just how many would you call 'laughable'. I live south of the river - SE11 - and know many hundreds of people . Ok , I admit that a few of these  are Liverpool or ManU fans, but how many orginate from the south ? One , I think. Now , as for knowing  fans of London clubs ...

Again , following northern clubs in this part of the world is miles away from being  the norm.

____

lol ? Bow bells is 2.5 miles from Upton Park and 8 miles from the Emirates, Weest Ham are a true cockney club in every sense so freddiek was correct hth. But Leyton Orient even close as figjam says, by less than half a miles closer than WHUFC.
Also Edgeware is in the district of Middlesex but Middlesex is in North London in the London borough of Barnet bordering Harrow so pip was correct.

Cockneys are working class Londoners living in the east End. They don't support teams from the north. They usually support West Ham.

lol have you eve been to London? I went to schools with cockneys being a Londoner myself and believe me they are a plenty, remember one kid who wore a United shirt every day, never looked washed either as a side point.

You have to laugh.

I know the odd geezer who supports Man U or whatever, but it really isnt that common.

Maybe at school or whatever, but you always get a few spaz's like that!

Me? I live within about 1/2 a mile of WHL , so Spurs for me ;)

there might be a pub called the bow bells about 2 1/2 miles from upton pk, but the bells that determine whether you're a cockney or not are the bells of st mary le bow which is a church in the city of london, which i reckon might be a tad further away.

Most of East London (inc Walthamstow) developed strong Cockney accents back in my day, Hackney moreso. Bow, Bethnal Green, Whitechapel etc were probably the strongest before our time but it developed to the point where even south Londoners sounded Cockney. I can reason with northerners seeing London, as a whole, being Cockney and even Essex these days, although the latter is due to most Cockneys moving out that way.

It's a mute point these days because Cockney, in and around these same areas, is dying and being replaced by what they now term 'Urban'
