Tips Wigan to be relegated because "None of Roberto Martinez's signings make you think that Wigan can improve on last season, especially given their lack of firepower".

So what about this signing? Mauro Boselli...

In July 2008 Estudiantes de La Plata bought 50% of his transfer from Boca, allowing Boselli to move to La Plata. In Estudiantes, he started strongly with seven goals in his first 13 league games with the club.

In 2009 Boselli won the Copa Libertadores with Estudiantes. He played a key role in their campaign, scoring the winning goal against Cruzeiro Esporte Clube in Belo Horizonte, one of 8 goals in the tournament. He finished as the overall top-scorer in the competition.

Mauro Boselli scored 50 goals at Estudiantes de la Plata since June 2008. He hit 32 goals in the Primera División Argentina and a further 18 goals in international cups; 13 in Copa Libertadores de America, 4 in Copa Sudamericana and 1 in the FIFA Club World Cup.

On 29 June 2010, Boselli signed a four year deal with Wigan Athletic for $9.800.000 dollars. In his first appearance for the club, a friendly match against Swedish Team Ostersunds, Boselli scored two goals in a 3-2 win for Wigan with team mate Charles N'Zogbia scoring the third.

Why on earth do the RP pay this buffoon for such cr@p work? At least the author of the piece on Wigan on page 13 of the pull out has bothered to do his work.

There is no substance to his opinion though kenilworth.  Scharner looks a miss to me but Alcaraz or Bramble iyo?  A 22 goals in 31 games striker from the Argentine Prem or nothing?  The man is a walking cliche.

Afternoon, cgullman.

I notice that while inevitably springing to the defence of an RP columnist, supernap does not claim that Cascarino made a profit last season, or any other season.

Incidentally cgullman, did you see the interview Gus gave to the BBC yesterday? It was on the BBC local news for that area iirc.

Mr Worth is quite prepared to debate emphatically with anyone who offers an opinion that he doesn't share isn't he?!   I will remember for next time:

Yep, fair enough I guess.  Shame the trade paper sees it that way, maybe more a thing for one of the tabs perhaps but such is life.

The various Betfair fora are indeed pockmarked with supernap's invariably negative and condemnatory views. About the only time he says anything positive is when one of Millington's men comes under pressure.

And no, I am still NOT BRUCE MILLINGTON.

Cascarino does get paid to write in the Times, but sadly his contributions to that previously august organ also leave a lot to be desired.

Every time I see his byline, I am gripped by the eerie certainty that Bernard Levin is turning in his grave.

Didn't notice your Gus interview question.  I missed it but read about it.  Can probably find a link for it if it was of interest to you?

I never really had a lot of time for him - positively or negatively - until he did some crazy jig as he was being taken off in the second leg of the Carling Cup semi-final against Chelsea, with us leading 5-1, and the Chelsea end already emptier than clockwork's head.

I'm coming in for a bit of stick from tuckyboy and all I
said was that Cascarino was just a guesser as is most
tipsters. Sorry about that. Regards Cascarino I have no
idea whether he wins or not, but should he be slated cos
his opinion differed from a forumite ? By the way, tuckyboy
talking about negativity, your main contribution on this
thread is just that, offering only criticism of me and the
said Cascarino. What is your view on Wigan ?

to be honest,i like wigan as a football team,i know its a cliche, but they at least try and play football the way it should be played, and also admire them for coming from the old third division to the premier league,an excellent achievement for a small club,i once even went and watched them play chelsea at the beginning of there season (think it was 2 season's ago),but i do fear for there premier league existence if they play anywhere near like they have been for the last season or 2,

I've just read his piece and regards Wigan, he just thinks 9/4
is better value than 3/10 Blackpool, and that all you can
argue about. Are Wigan 8 times more likely to be relegated
than Blackpool ? Me ? I don't know. Regards his other tips
I don't like his top goalscorer Van Persie, Forest for the
Championship, or Soton in League1. All those prices are too
short IMO.

kautostars, I like Martinez a lot, and I like the way he wants to play - that said, I think they may struggle, as contrary to some observers, I think losing Bramble is a big blow for them. I wouldn't have a view on Boselli, having never seen him play, but I would still think that they have enough about them to stay up, given the presence of WBA and Blackpool, whom I consider certainties for the drop.

Overall though, I don't like them much, as I can't stand Dave Whelan, who is a rentaquote curmudgeon who systematically bought his way out of every division they ever played in. Nothing wrong with a man spending his money how he sees fit of course, but it sticks in my craw to then have him lecturing the world about what is right and proper.

Supernap, firstly I don't like Cascarino, full stop. He is an idiot, a bad judge, and a terrible writer. I did not express any opinions about you, just commented on your highly predictable appearance on a thread about an RP columnist.

I think Cascarino's tips are awful. Do the RP not keep an ongoing or annual profit/loss record of their tipsters?

It would be an interesting record to see.

fancies everton in front of spurs on the basis that they are "far better organised". just where is the evidence for this outrageous claim ? one thing arry's sides always are a fantastastically well organised. spurs have an unbelievable defensive record under him at home (conceded more than 1 goal only once in 34 games).
By:

When: 04 Aug 10 15:09
I would be about 1/10 that Cascarino didn't know they had signed Boselli and 1/50 that he had not heard of him anyway.

Tuckyboy, I almost never read his piece in either the Post or the Times and i'm surprised at those
publications chose to pay him for a contribution to be honest, and regards his picks, he's entitled
to them as much as anyone. Regards defending RP columnists, it's usually about their tipping which
is very difficult to make pay considering the restraints they do their tipping under. Negative ? Perhaps
I am.

I love Tony Cascarino.

Each Saturday I narrow my bets down to one or two selections and almost inevitably Cas will oppose my views - this is the final vindication that I am onto a winner.

I win every season betting on football and Cascarino regularly opposes my selection ergo he loses every season.
