Tips Wigan to be relegated because "None of Roberto Martinez's signings make you think that Wigan can improve on last season, especially given their lack of firepower".

So what about this signing? Mauro Boselli...

In July 2008 Estudiantes de La Plata bought 50% of his transfer from Boca, allowing Boselli to move to La Plata. In Estudiantes, he started strongly with seven goals in his first 13 league games with the club.

In 2009 Boselli won the Copa Libertadores with Estudiantes. He played a key role in their campaign, scoring the winning goal against Cruzeiro Esporte Clube in Belo Horizonte, one of 8 goals in the tournament. He finished as the overall top-scorer in the competition.

Mauro Boselli scored 50 goals at Estudiantes de la Plata since June 2008. He hit 32 goals in the Primera División Argentina and a further 18 goals in international cups; 13 in Copa Libertadores de America, 4 in Copa Sudamericana and 1 in the FIFA Club World Cup.

On 29 June 2010, Boselli signed a four year deal with Wigan Athletic for $9.800.000 dollars. In his first appearance for the club, a friendly match against Swedish Team Ostersunds, Boselli scored two goals in a 3-2 win for Wigan with team mate Charles N'Zogbia scoring the third.

Why on earth do the RP pay this buffoon for such cr@p work? At least the author of the piece on Wigan on page 13 of the pull out has bothered to do his work.

There is no substance to his opinion though kenilworth.  Scharner looks a miss to me but Alcaraz or Bramble iyo?  A 22 goals in 31 games striker from the Argentine Prem or nothing?  The man is a walking cliche.

I notice that while inevitably springing to the defence of an RP columnist, supernap does not claim that Cascarino made a profit last season, or any other season.

Incidentally cgullman, did you see the interview Gus gave to the BBC yesterday? It was on the BBC local news for that area iirc.

is better value than 3/10 Blackpool, and that all you can
argue about. Are Wigan 8 times more likely to be relegated
than Blackpool ? Me ? I don't know. Regards his other tips
I don't like his top goalscorer Van Persie, Forest for the

short IMO.

Report tuckyboy August 4, 2010 3:03 PM BST
kautostars, I like Martinez a lot, and I like the way he wants to play - that said, I think they may struggle, as contrary to some observers, I think losing Bramble is a big blow for them. I wouldn't have a view on Boselli, having never seen him play, but I would still think that they have enough about them to stay up, given the presence of WBA and Blackpool, whom I consider certainties for the drop.

Overall though, I don't like them much, as I can't stand Dave Whelan, who is a rentaquote curmudgeon who systematically bought his way out of every division they ever played in. Nothing wrong with a man spending his money how he sees fit of course, but it sticks in my craw to then have him lecturing the world about what is right and proper.

Supernap, firstly I don't like Cascarino, full stop. He is an idiot, a bad judge, and a terrible writer. I did not express any opinions about you, just commented on your highly predictable appearance on a thread about an RP columnist.

Tuckyboy, I almost never read his piece in either the Post or the Times and i'm surprised at those
publications chose to pay him for a contribution to be honest, and regards his picks, he's entitled

I love Tony Cascarino.

Each Saturday I narrow my bets down to one or two selections and almost inevitably Cas will oppose my views - this is the final vindication that I am onto a winner.

I win every season betting on football and Cascarino regularly opposes my selection ergo he loses every season.
Report cgull August 4, 2010 3:15 PM BST
dananders, you are missing the point.  We don't know.  Neither does Cascarino.  But how can you possibly argue that signing a 22/31 striker from the top div in Argentina will not improve their threat?  You can't can you. He might, he might not.  But it gives them a better chance than signing no-one doesn't it.
Report Pesam August 4, 2010 3:16 PM BST
Oh, and Wigan will stay up.

You might think that dananders, but you can hardly guarantee it really, can you?

Spurs conceded eight goals less than Everton last season, had the best home defensive record in the League for the second successive year, and despite the constant drone about Everton's injuries, which even though fair comment is now done to death, Spurs also played the vast majority of their matches without one or both of their two first-choice centre-backs.

FWIW, I like Everton, and I hope they do well next season.

Read an interesting piece by Tim Vickery about Boselli circa a month ago.

He painted a picture of him as some sort of Argentinian Lineker, contributing nothing other than goals and very much relying on him getting excellent service.

I haven't seen him play, so will wait to form my own opinion, but I rate Vickery as a fairly informed pundit, so it's a starting point.

I don't know what to make of Wigan.

I want to like them, I really do.

I like McCarthy. I like Moses. I like Rodallega. I like N'Zogbia (well, on the pitch, at least).

But there are concerns. Bramble and Scharner gone. Alcaraz looks decent but didn't exactly make convincing noises about his desire to be here. Thomas (who is 54 imo) and Diame did well but can I trust them to run a midfield all season with little backup?

I don't know. Hope they do well and they are realistically competing to stay out of one and a half relegation places, so they must have a chance.

I must admit I've not looked at your fixtures, so my post was more of an observation than based on hard evidence.

If I had to put my £2 on it (depending on the prices, of course), I'd expect you to do better after Christmas. If you lost your Champions League play-off, it would be a massive setback (though I wouldn't expect you to struggle like we did in 2005 cos you're a much better side than we were). And if you have six group games, I would expect them to be a distraction.

I don't think Redknapp would make changes cos of Europe, but nevertheless it's still a major thing to consider.
