It looks like Liverpool's Top 4 spot is well and truly up for grabs. Are Tottenham, Villa or City capable of displacing England's most successful European club?

And without the Champion's League gravy train what will become of the once great Liverpool?

Will Rafa get the boot?

Chelsea and Arsenal are on another level this season admitedly.

Wouldn't call it traditional, plenty of failed seasons in PL
PL finishes
Liverpool 86434374325453342

if you want a tradition:
Chelsea 00006435664211223
since the money came [b211223[/b]

Arsenal 04053122212124434
since Wenger came 3122212124434

Man U since the PL started... 11211211131332111

Been top four 8 of the last 10 years... wouldnt you call that traditional?
Report Shab • November 10, 2009 10:31 AM GMT
THe problem that they have is that their 2 best players probably need surgery, and the World Cup is at the end of the season.

I can't see Gerrard or Torres waiting until after the WC to get their operations, as Torres has a serious chance of winning the WC and Gerrard probably thinks he has, so both will want to be 100% fit for it.

Also one of the them years out of the top 4, Liverpool were number 1 in europe.
Report Can't Catch Me • November 10, 2009 10:35 AM GMT
Know what you are saying Shab, but they also have to have a good season to ensure they are actaully in the starting XI (SG particularly)
Report REDUNDANT PUNTER • November 10, 2009 10:36 AM GMT
That does not count because it was a fluke, and they did not win it milan lost it hey nobby
Report NobbyClarke • November 10, 2009 10:36 AM GMT
Shab if either Gerrard's or Torres' injuries were operable then they would have been under the knife already.

It looks like the pair just need a month or so off.

Spot on RP.

As far as I am concerned United have only ever won it once, Wembley 68.
Report REDUNDANT PUNTER • November 10, 2009 10:39 AM GMT
why is that ?
Report NobbyClarke • November 10, 2009 10:42 AM GMT
Because Manchester United are supposed to be about playing with style, brio, like champions not holding out for a penalty shoot out or a couple of stuffy goals at the death.
Report REDUNDANT PUNTER • November 10, 2009 10:45 AM GMT
Nobby if it was not for the two stuffy late goals and the penalty shootout you refer too united would be classed as european lightweights, instead of the middleweight status they now have
Report sugarfoot • November 10, 2009 10:46 AM GMT
if you look at the distribution of Liverpool's finishes, you would say that they are most commonly 3rd or 4th; to say they are top four implies a reasonable number of firsts and seconds

I think traditionally Liverpool are accepted by the media, and most other teams managers if not fans as one of the top four, hence all the other teams are quoted as looking to break the top 4 monopoly imo

barca and united are both truly bigger than liverpool. as little as i care for the chumps league.. (and yes i know fergie loves it as you all keep saying)

id love to get to 6 and see what the vermin have to say then... or even five..

because by that time we will be a few leagues clear as well..

Well there you go.

Owned by a pair of squabbling broke Yanks with £20,000,000 a year transfer budget - the future looks so bright.

How is the ground coming on?
Report Inspired 25 • November 10, 2009 11:04 AM GMT
admittedly liverpool have been terrible in certain areas this season already, but we know it, as for united they are STILL under the illusion that a defence with vidic and ferdinand at the back is good enough to cause teams such as chelsea and arsenal a threat. united played well on sunday but still lost, wake up and smell the coffee.
Report REDUNDANT PUNTER • November 10, 2009 11:08 AM GMT
It matters not in this context european cups/cl won is how a club is viewed in terms of success, the future matters not as no one can tell, if unite won five or six, they would be viewd correctly as euro greats imo
Report big-game-player • November 10, 2009 11:11 AM GMT
some of us care more about being champions of our own country than some competition thats almost fixed for the so called top teams to monopolise..

thats what is wrong with the chumps league.. teams can finish no higher than fifth in their respective league and still laughably call themselves the best in europe.. maybe if they contended for the title and finished 1st or 2nd and won it yeah i can see that..
Report big-game-player • November 10, 2009 11:12 AM GMT
well a defence WITHOUT rio and vidic did more than enough on sunday other than a disputed goal imo...

ppl concentrate on uniteds alleged decline and defiiences but concentrate on your own a bit more :)

Liverpool stand 7th in the league after what must be one of the most dire string of results in their history.

Their 2 best players need a month off.

Rafa will not be manager if they fail to qualify for the CL.

Without the CL money the squad will have to be trimmed.
Report big-game-player • November 10, 2009 11:16 AM GMT
ppl keep saying they need a cash in jection... didnt they spend 20 million on an italian who is reknowned for being slightly injury prone?

how many 20 million pound signings did united, chelsea, and arsenal make in the summer just out of interest?
Report NobbyClarke • November 10, 2009 11:19 AM GMT
The problem is £20,000,000 does not buy the kind of player United want.

Now City have upped the stakes any world class player will cost at least £40,000,000.
Report PAULBU • November 10, 2009 12:57 PM GMT
Whoever ends up in fourth spot, they will be 20 points behind the third. I've seen both City and Villa this season at Ewood and neither impressed as top four candidates. As for Spurs, they rarely finish anywhere remotely close to the top four.

Pitiful to imagine the present Liverpool are heavyweight anythings.

Liverpool's heavyweights sit on the MoTD sofa and are grandparents.
