Well last night was thrilling stuff and tonight looks like it might be equally as dire. I know Silverback is sweet on a lot tonight but personally I'm really not. here's the line up though Happy

Mark Webster v Mensur Suljovic:

Opening match sees former world champion Webster take on The Gentle Mensur Suljovic. Webster has had a miserable few months and hasn't really ever recovered from an awful showing in the premier league. I think he's a very solid player but for whatever reason it's just not really happening for him just now. Suljovic is an odd player to watch with an unorthodox action and is very solid. However he can play some decent darts at times and I think he might be able to take advantage of Webster's low confidence.

Recommendation: 0.5pt win Mensur Suljovic @ 13/8 (General)

Gino Vos v Royden Lam:

Evening's qualifier sees dutchman Vos take on Hong Kong's Royden Lam. Gonna have a small play on this on Lam based on the fact I really don't rate Vos at all and think he's priced up as fav on the fact the bookies have actually heard of him. Lam actually earned a tour card this year at Q-School but only played 3 events so no real form but he came through the qualifier with relative ease it seems and I think he's a live outsider.

Recommendation: 0.5pt win Royden Lam @ 6/4 (SJ)

James Wade v Darren Webster:

I think over time I must have laid Wade at ludicrously short odds more times than any other player pre match and no matter how badly he plays I never seem to collect. He's had well documented issues with bipolar and while I do feel for the guy I don't think it excuses some of his behaviour on the oche when he demonstrates a lack of respect towards most opponents. Yet again I think he looks very short here but is Webster the man to take advantage? He's a former QF at the worlds but the depth in that time was dreadful and he showed his form last year when losing to Mark Walsh in R1. Wade will probably average mid 80's and somehow win 3-0 but I'll be watching not punting.

Recommendation: No Bet

Wes Newton v Vos/Lam:

Newton falls very much into my list of players who thinks they're much better than they are. He's an ok player but I don't think he screams major winner of any tourney let alone a World Championship. Hard to say what will happen till opponent is known but maybe lay the whitewash which has been a decent ploy this year.

Recommendation: No Bet

Kevin Painter v Tomas Seyler:

Tournament finally comes alive with the appearance of King Muttley himself and I for one cannot wait to see him lick his fingers and snarl at the board. In all seriousness I don't think Painter is going to be improving much and while he still wins the odd game on tv I am dubious as to whether he has a run to the later stages nowadays. He plays german qualifier Seyler who hasn't been here in 4 years when he lost in the prelim match and I doubt he will be progressing past R1 here. Struggling to find a bet here so will probably be in my bed before they come on.

Recommendation: No Bet

Summary: Couple of plays on 2 outsiders tonight but not majorly strong on anything. I'll probably also get sucked into laying Wade at 1.1x and doing it in but hey ho. All bets and banter as welcome as always and I await Silverback sharing his thoughts with interest Grin

I like your two picks HH. Mark Webster showed a bit of form in Wolverhampton but more so in the short group stages, he didn't impress v Waites in the last 16. Slightly concerned he may be picking up a bit but there's scant other proof of it. He's made one 1/4 final in a Euro tour event but don't think he's even reached a last 16 on the regular tour. A couple of ok performances in best of 9 legs are bugger all evidence he's in form. You pretty much know what you get with Suljovic, he's remarkably consistent despite his quirks and his record this year is the superior of the two.

Lam is another of these highly ranked soft tip players who tend to be steady enough with the bonus of playing PDC qualifying school and UK Open so perhaps has more of a taste for the real thing. And I absolutely agree with you that Vos is priced on "name" only. He's done nothing in the PDC since switching a couple of years back.

If it was a best of 13 or 15 I'd have been all over Lam mate but best of 7 I'm just a wee bit wary. As for Suljovic I was keen to get with him on his maxes too as he's one of these guys who can go 60,45,26,180,140,180,26 etc etc.

However over 3.5 is just one more than I was looking for so decided to have the straight up match bet.

6 points win on webster should have far to much class for the Austrian 1.6 on here terrific value

Darren Webster is in fantastic form. Wade 3-0 simply has to be laid.

In the last 3 months, I reckon he's beaten 10 players who have already  qualified for the last 32 - some more than once (Anderson, Pipe). Others include Wright, Hamilton, King and Caven

I really can't think of a player similar to his perceived standard who's been in such good form going into the Worlds. He's got the experience of Ally Pally from last year when he hit 180s in three successive legs. Had a decent run at the Circus Tavern a good few years back now. There's a lot to like here. The timing for him seems spot on in terms of his form.

(Slightly concerningly he lost to Matt Clark last match but hey ho)

I will be laying Wade 3-0 this evening, and look forward to watching Wade win every set from 2-0 behind with Webster taking 15 darts to get out from 100 in the decider each time, before Wade performs the shortest handshake in history, spins round and trots off the stage looking like he's just been told his walk on girl has switched to doing the cobra with Devon Petersen

Might just be a good floor player though? I've been burned by people not being able to put Wade away on numerous occasions I genuinely think he's the luckiest sod on tour

Only way to find out is stick him on the TV again HH.

Yeah but he has been to the QF of the worlds before, he can handle himself on stage so I don't think he's a bottler, just his usual standard isn't good enough.

Wade is just incredibly hard to put away, he so rarely buckles and has a shocker on the doubles which puts oppts under pressure, they miss he hits.

So he plods to a 3-0 win tonight, and sickoflayingwinners tells us what a great bet we've all missed

have backed suljovic +1.5 rather than the match odds, mark webster has quite a lot of bottle under the cosh i think - can see him making a mess of things but somehow stumbling past the winning post if it goes the distance

I fancy Webster to win this but I'm going to wait and see if I can get 6/4 or so. I think he might struggle early but Sully has always struck me as a bottler - it doesn't show too often because he tends not to actually get to the position where bottling it matters much.

Whenever I've watched Suljovic I've been astonished at him getting darts to go in the right place as his throw gets more theatrical, esp 3rd dart

Never got much of an impression either way about his bottle, just find him so funny to watch that I can't really concentrate on what's going on

Is it my imagination or do the majority of soft tip guys look like they're trying to make it stick in the wall? If that's the case, is it because of the light darts, or because they have to make it register on the machine?
