I think by memory England were pretty much in the doldrums and couldn't buy a win before the introduction of bazball so let's not be over critical of getting out in limited over fashion , sympathize somewhat when considering the balance they're asked to undertake between the short and long game.

Exactly the point, completely different skill set required for a Test match, one day batsmen should be nowhere near until they can learn some restraint.

Boycott and Gooch would have been 50 without loss at lunch.

Which is exactly what the situation requires.

I will support England and Stokes but it would not hurt to have a grown up in the room!

lest we forget all the 30-3’s and 40-4’s

Was hoping it would be worth the trip across town.
In fairness I do think the current crop of batsmen are incredibly talented, just require some application to the job in hand.

The Boycott & Gooch suggestion may well be true but then you'd have to consider the spiraling of test cricket's popularity and where the format would be now , love or hate bazball it has contributed largely to the resurrection of test cricket.

Sometimes we demand the best from both angles when it's a pretty demanding expectation.

Broad suggesting a 220 chase puts the result in the balance

A very fair point, unfortunately once it becomes a slogging match it ceases to be a Test Match.
Any team stating "we don't do draws" really don't stand a chance.

Draw looks awfully short @4.6

Test Cricket is always evolving. England have adapted. You can see from this match England have curtailed it but you cannot change Mr Scorpions nature

Graham Gooch was not a blocker or slow scorer - he had a strike rate of 49.5 which was fairly decent (Root and Stokes are in the high 50s playing bazball).

It is also food for thought that given our (often justified) criticism of Zak and Pope, it took GG 22 tests before he scored a test hundred. He went on to score 8,900 runs for his country.

Michael Vaughan does get my goat somewhat, whilst he raises some good points he often alters his stance or contradicts himself as a match situation changes.
Just stand by your convictions man !

And imo it is bowlers that tend to win matches, not batsman. You have to take 20 wickets to win a game (declarations aside), there is no equivalent maxim for batting except for scoring more runs than your opponents.

Agree with the Gooch point Dixie but when Barstool posted regarding the 50 stand he was probably thinking that Gooch scored 48 of them    Laugh

Gooch was class - if he played in this era, he'd be pinging it to all parts in every format.

Equalised my green

Happy with result. Waited a long time for a better option but it did not materialise today. There was a time yesterday but it is what it is. Two good wins in the trot is good enough. Not going to be greedy.

Despite saying i'd leave the all green balance as it is i've just leveled across as well WD , got all the big early prices on the draw which has allowed the luxury.

Told the wife the week overseas is toast and look for a weekend in Harrogate instead , at least i don't have to eat the trifle.

This is as tense as it gets and anything goes from here , good luck all   Happy

The track is still a puzzle to me and not altogether sure what's ahead , slow scoring and a long stay could be the answer here if they think the track will decline exponentially so making latter part tomorrow really difficult.

Will the soft ball quieten the pitch?

India need Jaiswal to smash it all over the gaff and Rahul play Test Match cricket. I think anything above 200 is decent to defend. If it behaves like it did this morning then Archer can cause mayhem but India's batters are more stoic and can score runs quickly without being reckless.

The game is in the balance for me

When does stokes declare?

Yup, Jaiswal coming off (as is his norm, the little beaut) would take a second new ball out of equation with sub-300 targets

Even if another big partnership can't imagine a declaration even enters the equation , it's a not lose match rather than a must win.

The Indian 6,7 and 8 haven't done badly in the match so far considering they were a concern for most , 125 runs and 7-168.
