Absolutely no issue with Mills - I'd have him ahead of ARcher if he had been fit - he had an average game v Aus, it happens
By:
Agree Mills a far better choice than the unreliable Archer.
By:
Mills a weak link? He DOES bowl at the death and we all know how punishing that can be. And are we forgetting he took the wickets of Agar and Starc who were both looking very dangerous at the time.

not the best of starts today by england

Never understand why they dont push the singles on these pitches in a tip and run fashion to put pressure on the field, bowler and Captain. The bad ball usually comes along.

Christ!
I am not a huge fan of Butler for Test Cricket but by God does he have something special! |
By:
for a man of his talents it's almost overdue but great to see him playing like that...hard to believe he was only ranked 17th in 20/20 batting rankings...suspect a lot of bowlers would have him as more of a top 5..
By:
rankings for one day cricket are a joke. far too much emphasis on average rather than strike rate. he's miles down the ODI rankings despite averaging nearly 40 batting mostly at number 6 and a strike rate of like 120. no one else in ODI history has scored as many runs at that sort of rate
not sure why he never tees off in test cricket. by all means have a look but for 20 mins but then he should for it more often. trying to play too responsibly has not really had the desired results |
By:
should go for it
By:
Quite EXTRA ordinary!
What is shocking though is Sam Curran with a white polo neck and a medallion. FFS someone has to have a word. That would be a fine and head flushed down the toilet in my team! |
By:
Yeah he is a puzzle. Somebody who bats like that not just a wide stance heavy bat thugee but someone who can think, move his feet and wrists he must be able to bat.
By:
yep, I'm not a great believer in them I must admit Mafe' was still surprised to see him so low..a lot of the other obvious ones in the top 10 but love him opening in this format..
By:
Would also have loved to have seen Rashid and Moen in the Ashes this winter for a couple of the Tests.
Archer Anderson Robinson Stokes Moen Rashid Would have been a decent bowling attack to counter the Aussies. Batting to 9 although still brittle. Our attack looks a little thin this winter. |
By:
still not convinced Rashid would be good enough in test cricket except in really favourable conditions WD...
Robinson been a great find but hope he's working hard on his fitness ahead of the tour...can't afford those third spells to be down at 79-80 mph in Oz.. still think a fully motivated and fit Broad should have something to offer in those conditions.. overall can't say I'm very optimistic but then I rarely am ![]() |

brentford, see my reservations about nuno were not wrong. wrong job at the wrong time. a mourinho disciple following mourinho was never likely to work. strange move all round
By:
yep, didn't seem to be getting much love from the start but wasn't looking great was it ? certainly pulled the trigger quick enough, helps keep the pressure off Levy I guess..
Conte ? |
By:
Mills injury going to make our seam bowling a bit medium pace in this tournament..though in these conditions may not be much of an issue I guess..
By:
impressive in the end, a bowler down and having to bowl so much spin with a wet ball...was forgetting if Woody is fit I guess he comes in for Mills..
By:
England pretty impressive today. Maybe Wood will be fit.
Not sure Malan is the right man for T20 but if we do lose early wickets against a good side in the knockout he may come into his own Avoid Pakistan is the order of qualification |
By:
presume conte is pretty much a done deal. not gonna be pretty for levy if it falls through again and we're left searching around for another 2nd rate manager
By:
will take a miracle for england and pakistan not to win their groups from here with england's massive run rate and pakistan having the 2 rags to play
By:
As long as the toss is not a issue they are the two best teams for the final. Would love to see Afghanistan qualify for semi
By:
Fair play to Namibia - they had a fair go at an impossible target
By:
You get the feeling things are almost going too well for England. Does the winner usually go through the tournament unbeaten?
I have a fear that at some stage they are going to be exposed as at least a bowler light. On a given day it only takes a couple to come in for some tap, and there isn't a lot to bail them out. England bat deep, but so far that depth hasn't been needed. |
By:
I would also question whether the hitters, particularly Livingstone, should be coming in ahead of Morgan. I know there was a mini crisis against Sri Lanka, but that was a pretty slow 40, and the final total might well have been under par.
By:
Morgan had horrendous conditions to deal with for most of his 40 runs. It was a brilliant knock.
We're much weaker without Mills - real shame for him, and takes alot of variety out of our attack. The pitches are v bowler friendly tho, so we might be ok, especially if we can use Wood to replace him. |
By:
Wasn't he playing under the same conditions as everyone else? When Butler is carrying the innings, contributing a run a ball at the other end is not brilliant. His very slow start just added extra pressure on Butler.
He has been struggling for a long time. That can't just be down to conditions. Bottom line is that even playing well he doesn't have the capacity to score at a faster rate than batsmen below him in the order. |
By:
Morgan hasn't been in great form of late so you could make a debate on those grounds (though I don't agree personally) but before the dew came down it was probably as tough as it's been in the tournament against some decent spin options for this format and Eng were 3 down early so some consolidation was required
his sr in t20i's is over 137 so he's not an issue of not scoring quickly enough in general (Butler is 141)...Livingstone in that situation may well have not had the experience to rebuild the innings as well as Morgan did. |
By:
Morgan is out of form but I wouldn’t leave him out. He has built and guided this team. Maybe he has now played himself into some sort of form. Batting conditions have not been great and even the mercurial Indians have struggled.
There is a case for moving Livingstone up sooner but not when batting was as difficult as it was at the time Morgan entered the fray. Let’s see how Pakistan fare batting first against top quality bowlers and how they cope if they lose early wickets. I think the player under consideration should be Malan. Not sure this is his format although I want him at 3 in the Ashes. |
By:
Root has looked a long way off the T20 team in recent years in batter-friendly conditions in the UK. He would be invaluable at 3 in this though, with conditions being as hard as they are, and his spin would be v handy too. But in the absence of him and Hales (for different reasons), there is nobody in the squad who is putting any pressure on the top order. Batting line up looks great, just hope the replacement for Mills can hold their own, and we will have a great chance unless conditions conspire against us in the knockouts, we've looked the best team by a distance so far
By:
Agree afoot is a great manipulator of the ball. Too many wide stance big hitters around atm Root might have been invaluable on these wickets, certainly of more value than Malan
By:
How many of the team are actually english ?

Eng strong favs in my book
main comp are pakistan who have beaten a poor india, scotland ffs, new zealand - just and afganistan. england beaten aus easily easily , windies, lanka and bangers all pretty comfortably. injuries in bowling a bit of a worry but i think they will win it |
By:
Aus should beat WI and qualify. Who on earth decided to have this announcer yelling between overs! Should be quietly arrested and locked up until the tournament is over.
By:
Might be interesting now. It would be ironic if WI knocked out Australia after their poor performances so far.
By:
Unlikely. It let’s see if the new ball helps

Finch and Warne4 are flat track bullies who I think will be found out by Shaheen Shah Afridi

England playing here, to get Australia knocked out.
