I reckon it is physically/mathematically impossible to bowl a better ball than that and not get the wicket. I millimetre would do it.

Did the umpire give that 'not out' cos he thought the ball was going over or cos he thought the bat hit the ball?

It just so happens, johnny, I've thought about your post but have to stick to my guns: Test Matches are designated to last 5 days. Now the game has speeded up, for reasons we all know, there are very often 4-day Tests. The old bore draws are gone forever, so 4 or 5 days is what the game is all about now, not the 2-day farce we've just had.

It looked high to me on first sight

..and in view of the 4th innings, the difference it would have made to Bess's morale could be crucial

the last test was an outlier..most tests even these days last at least 3 daysWink

Aunt Bessie still serving up pies ffs....he actually looks quite dangerous at times but just kills all the pressure and hard work of everyone else with the relentless 4 balls,

hard to think that one of his best assets in SA was his control and economy ...needs some time out of the international spotlight.

Bess just shipping runs..good job we got 300+ 1st inns

re Pant lbw - the apparent hitting him high is exaggerated by the fact he's probably wearing the pads of a 12 year old

It's not that Bess can't bowl well, it's that he isn't bowling well at the minute. Form and all that.

aye but have you ever seen a frontline finger spinner bowl so many full tosses,

I'm sure he'll be an important part of England's future but needs a load of county stuff to re find the consistency that was a true asset in SA

Will Moeen be a viable pick for the Ashes?

Bess is rapidly turning into India's most productive spinner

Take the ball off him for heaven's sake, Joe.

We can't go through an entire Ashes tour with just one spinner, so who to take?

I guess there's six months plus to sort out who's in form.

Not for me - only need one spinner bar Sydney maybe anyway...despite the way Mo's been used by England and at times having a lot of success I've never been convinced he should have been a front line spinner...if he could have held down the 6 spot with a better batting record as he early career suggested him capable of then it would have made life a lot easier in these parts of the world.

That black line is not in the right place.

People fall ill/get injured (and there's such a thing as losing form) it would be madness not to have another spinner on the plane.

I'd want to take a 2nd spinner but it wouldn't be Mo,
obviously if Bess has a good domestic summer he's straight back in anyway though only as backup to Leach (bar potentially Sydney though that isn't always a requirement these days) beyond that there are certainly a few in the journeyman/ economical brigade that should get consideration.

Can you name the names, brentford? I'm not clued up.

as I didn't see any of the Bob Willis trophy I think I'd want to check the stats before randomly throwing names around but that'll have to wait till the end of play,

not fitting either of the criteria I gave but I gather Mason Crane was in the reserve list

You can't take Bess as second spinner to Aus though ironically his height might be advantageous on the more bouncy pitches in Aus. Rashid would be nice if he could be bothered!

Rashid would be very nice indeed!

He'd be in ahead of Leach

Rashid would get spanked in Oz surely

Moen was perfect for India not Aussie fast bowlers. He could have made a huge contribution with the bat here that might have changed a match as well as with the ball

Game running away from England. In the last match the bowlers got them back in it, but they promptly lost three wickets knocking off a small deficit. Could be the same again.

quality ones can WD - he's been a major asset in white ball cricket and has had his moments in Asia but couldn't see him having a big impact, there's a reason that even before his desire to focus on white ball stuff he never really played much

Amar Virdi and Matt Parkinson were apparently also on the reserve list though again they fit more the younger promising end of things..
Virdi has a good 1st class (bowling) average for his age and certainly had his moments in the Bob trophy on stats
