Australia skipper Tim Paine: "Ah look, it happens mate. Ben Stokes has played one of the great innings. It's got to sting but we have to trust our process, we were very close. We are on the right track and we have two more chances to win the Ashes.

"I've seen Stokesy do it too many times, he played out of his skin and he had a bit of luck. The lbw shout is irrelevant, we can't control it, it was given not out.

"The whole series has been pretty good to watch. We could have batted them right out of the game and we left the door open for them."

Thanks - I had a shed load on England until yesterday then they went and lost those two early wickets so I was pleased to scratch out at 1.11, but I got a cheeky fiver on between 28 and 32. Amazed at how low the Draw traded during all that. I can't decide if it was earlier high-odds layers freeing up money to have a final punt or if people thought the Draw was the same as a Tie - we saw that happen in South Africa that time against Sri Lanka - that game also had a day left to go. How uncanny is that?

Unbelievable performance from Stokes and a superb test match. He deserves every plaudit going. Unfortunately for us we have a captain that is not good enough to play and imo made a  horlicks of the job today. A terrible defeat for us and I’m not sure we have the characters to turn this around. Wade to wicketkeep next test with Paine dropped and hopefully a fresh Starc introduced at Old Trafford. Smith back hopefully too. Well played England.

I don't think Paine did much wrong, apart from the review. The dropped catch (Harris?) and Lyon's amazing fumble were not the skipper's fault..

You don't expect a 70 odd last wicket partnership with 6s everywhere therefore rendering field placing irrelevant.

Playing defensive cricket when we need1 wicket. A mistake of gargantuan proportions.

Bonkers series and probably just going to enjoy the rest of it Happy

How can we have so many twists and turns?

how can a sport such as this produce the wrong result (s), how can a professional umpire not give a player out when its clear and obvious, an Australia victory is hand delivered across to England. I didn't have any financial interest so not talking through pocket. England have been handed the world cup and now a reprieve in the Ashes through blatant incompetence and no one dares raise the issue.

To be fair the home team is ALWAYS going to get those calls in tight games like that, the umpire is human and is going to react to the home crowds energy

I feel a bit sorry for Australia, but they did burn that review 2 overs before, and Lyons fumble was shocking for a top level athlete

They had the chance to bat England out of it, I thought 350 was more than enough but they had time on their hands and could have really grounded us into the dirt after bowling us out for 67

Since that lbw decision came after aus had dropped a catch and missed an easy run out, I would say there is no point complain about the umps decision.

Also the umpire has been horrible throughout the series. India would probably have complained by now and got him removed like they did bucknor. Aus can do the same but I am not sure how many times they've been on the right side of JoEl

How can a pro sportsman not take a ball and remove the bails? How can a pro cricketer/captain review an LBW when the ball clearly pitched outside leg stump?

How can a fielder drop THE catch to retain the Ashes?

All sport is played and officiated by fallible humans. Long may it continue.
